Subtelomeric Rearrangements: Presentation of 21 Probands with Emphasis on Familial Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Intellectual disability affects 2% - 3% of the general population, with a chromosomal abnormality being found in 4% - 28% of these patients and a cryptic subtelomeric abnormality in 3% - 16%. In most cases, these subtelomeric rearrangements are submicroscopic, requiring techniques other than conventional karyotype for detection. They may be de novo or inherited from an affected parent or from a healthy carrier of a balanced chromosomal abnormality. The aim of this study was to characterize patients from our medical genetics center, in whom both a deletion and duplication in subte

Wormian bones in a general paediatric population.

UNLABELLED: Wormian bones are small bones that are often found within the sutures and fontanelles of the skull. When a child presents an unexplained fracture or fracture(s), osteogenesis imperfecta is usually suggested when an "abnormally high number" of fractures are seen. PURPOSE: To assess the frequency, number, and topography of wormian bones in a "normal" paediatric population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a population aged from 0 to 3 years, we retrospectively analysed 605 CT brain scans carried out for a range of indications, excluding cases in which there was a suspicion of constitution

Surgical correction of lambdoid synostosis - New technique and first results.

OBJECTIVE: Premature craniosynostosis of the lambdoid suture is rare. The use of differential diagnosis to rule out positional occipital plagiocephaly is crucial. Nevertheless, once diagnosed, lambdoid craniosynostosis requires corrective surgery to prevent intracranial harm and aesthetic stigma by significant dyscrania. Operative correction of the lambdoid fusion is often performed by suturectomy and helmet therapy, total occipital remodeling interventions, transposition of occipital bone flaps, or occipital advancement procedures either with or without distraction osteogenesis. We present a

Surgical results of cranioplasty with a polymethylmethacrylate customized cranial implant in pediatric patients: a single-center experience.

OBJECTIVE Cranioplasty is a reconstructive procedure used to restore skull anatomy and repair skull defects. Optimal skull reconstruction is a challenge for neurosurgeons, and the strategy used to achieve the best result remains a topic of debate, especially in pediatric patients for whom the continuing skull growth makes the choice of material more difficult. When the native bone flap, which is universally accepted as the preferred option in pediatric patients, is unavailable, the authors' choice of prosthetic material is a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) implant designed using a custom-made te

Teaching Parents How to Prevent Acquired Cranial Asymmetry in Infants.

Acquired cranial asymmetry is prevalent in infants today. This is largely attributed to the supine sleep position recommended for infant safety. The condition can become permanent, so prevention and early detection are important. A prevention project was initiated where guidelines for Swedish child health nurses were developed, tested in a pilot study, revised, and then incorporated into a short cranial asymmetry prevention program for nurses. The program included detailed information on what to teach parents of newborns. An intervention study was initiated where one group of nurses was taught

Unilateral coronal synostosis: can we trust the sagittal suture as a landmark for the underlying superior sagittal sinus?

OBJECTIVE The sagittal suture is usually considered an external anatomical landmark, indicating the location of the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) for surgical approaches. Children with unilateral coronal synostosis (UCS) often present with an important deviation of the sagittal suture. Because these patients usually undergo frontal reconstruction or even endoscope-assisted minimally invasive procedures, it is imperative to know the location of the SSS. The aim of this investigation was to study the anatomical relationship between the SSS and the sagittal suture in children with anterior plagio

Correction of craniosynostosis using modified spring-assisted surgery.

BACKGROUND: The use of springs in craniofacial surgery was originated at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in 1997 as a way of remodeling the cranial vault postoperatively. After a decade of development, spring technology has been improved to a greater extent. However, there still exist some problems, such as the poor consistency of steel wire stretches, the wrong position of steel wire, the problem of increasing the elasticity of springs, and so on. METHOD: We have designed a spring device for external uses. This device is composed of 3 parts. The first part is the outside of the spring ring.
