Insulin-like growth factor binding protein-7: A marker of conjunctivalization in an animal model of limbal stem cell deficiency.

PURPOSE: Limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) is characterized by the loss of limbal epithelial stem cells, resulting in a pathological process termed 'conjunctivalization' which compromises corneal transparency, leading to blindness. Current diagnosis for LSCD is limited because reliable conjunctiva-specific biomarkers are lacking. This study sought to address this shortcoming through the serendipitous discovery of insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP)-7. METHODS: IGFBP-7 expression was determined in normal (n=83) and conjunctivalized (n=52) mouse corneas with experimentally-induc

[Corneal endothelial cell density and its correlation with the severity of pseudoexfoliation].

INTRODUCTION: Pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome is a common, age-related disease which is associated with the multifocal deposition of fibrillar PEX material in intra- and extraocular tissues. Subsequently among others second chronic open-angle glaucoma and corneal endothelial cell loss occurs. The present study analysed whether there is a correlation between the stage of the PEX process and corneal endothelial cell density (cECD), regardless of the non-existence or proof of secondary glaucoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One eye of 109 Caucasian subjects (mean age 71.7 years) was examined by slit-

Microcirculation in hypertensive patients.

Regardless of the mechanisms that initiate the increase in blood pressure, functional and structural changes in the systemic vasculature are the final result of long-standing hypertension. These changes can occur in the macro- but also in the microvasculature. The supply of the tissues with oxygen, nutrients, and metabolites occurs almost exclusively in the microcirculation (which comprises resistance arterioles, capillaries and venules), and an adequate perfusion via the microcirculatory network is essential for the integrity of tissue and organ function. This review focuses on results from c

Infrared- and white-light retinal sensitivity in glaucomatous neuropathy.

Glaucoma causes irreversible neuropathy, which, untreated, may lead to blindness. In this case-control study, we measured two-photon infrared (IR) light sensitivity in glaucomatous eyes to propose a new method to quantify the visual loss. In total, 64 patients were recruited with an equal distribution between glaucoma and control groups. Retinal sensitivity to IR light was assessed using a two-photon excitation device. A fundus-driven microperimeter was used to measure retinal sensitivity to visible light. The retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness was quantified automatically with optical
