120 infrabony defects treated with regenerative therapy: long-term results.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to evaluate the long-term benefits of regenerative therapy and which factors (i.e., smoking, oral hygiene, radiographic angle, tooth, clinical center, and biomaterial) influence results. METHODS: A total of 120 infrabony defects were treated with guided tissue regeneration using bioabsorbable and non-resorbable membranes with grafts or enamel matrix derivative (EMD) proteins. At baseline, smoking, x-ray angle, probing depth (PD), recession, and clinical attachment level (CAL) were recorded. CAL was measured 1 year post-surgery and every 2 years for ≤16 yea

Effect of ridge morphology on guided bone regeneration outcome: conventional tomographic study.

BACKGROUND: This study retrospectively analyzed conventional tomograms to estimate the prognostic value of the cross-sectional ridge morphology on the clinical outcome of guided bone regeneration (GBR). METHODS: Presurgical conventional tomograms of 23 single-implant sites were analyzed retrospectively in 20 patients. All sites had a non-space-making buccal dehiscence defect associated with the subsequently placed dental implant. Simultaneous GBR procedures were performed, and 6-month clinical outcomes were assessed. Measurements at baseline and at the 6-month reentry included defect height (

Effect of platelet-rich plasma on the healing of intrabony defects treated with Beta tricalcium phosphate and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membranes.

BACKGROUND: Regenerative periodontal therapy using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and different types of bone substitutes with or without guided tissue regeneration (GTR) has been proposed as a modality to enhance the outcome of regenerative surgery. However, there are limited data from controlled clinical studies evaluating the effect of PRP on the healing of deep intrabony defects treated with a combination of bone substitutes and GTR. The aim of this study was to clinically evaluate the effect of PRP on the healing of deep intrabony defects treated with beta tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) and

Periodontal healing in humans using anorganic bovine bone and bovine peritoneum-derived collagen membrane: a clinical and histologic case report.

The authors report the clinical and histologic data on the healing of a severe periodontal lesion obtained in a one-walled intrabony defect using anorganic bovine bone under a bovine peritoneum-derived collagen membrane. Eight months after surgery, a bone-like tissue replaced the lost tissues. A biopsy of this tissue was carried out. In the part of the specimen closer to the residual bony wall of the original defect, anorganic bone particles (ABP) appeared to be surrounded by a layer of newly formed bone; its osteocyte lacunae were colonized by osteocytes from the host, and actively secreting

Failure of root coverage of shallow gingival recessions employing GTR and a bioresorbable membrane.

The aim of the present study was to compare the postsurgical outcome of two different modes of surgical root coverage of predominantly shallow, Class I or II, gingival recessions. Fourteen facial recessions in nine patients were subjected to a coronally repositioned flap in combination with a bioresorbable membrane, and 14 sites in 13 patients were treated with a connective tissue graft employing an envelope technique. Immediately before surgery and after 6 and 12 months, gingival dimensions as well as root coverage and attachment gain were assessed. At baseline, mean recession depths amounted

YAC and cosmid FISH mapping of an unbalanced chromosomal translocation causing partial trisomy 21 and Down syndrome.

Most cases of Down syndrome (DS) result from a supernumerary chromosome 21; however, there are rare cases in which DS is due to partial trisomy of chromosome 21, involving various segments of the chromosome. The characterization of cases of DS that are due to partial trisomy 21 allows the phenotype to be correlated with the genotype. We present a case with features of DS and a partial trisomy of chromosome 21 inherited from a paternal balanced translocation involving chromosomes 13 and 21. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis using yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) probes mapped the bre

X-linked anhidrotic (hypohidrotic) ectodermal dysplasia is caused by mutation in a novel transmembrane protein.

Ectodermal dysplasias comprise over 150 syndromes of unknown pathogenesis. X-linked anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (EDA) is characterized by abnormal hair, teeth and sweat glands. We now describe the positional cloning of the gene mutated in EDA. Two exons, separated by a 200-kilobase intron, encode a predicted 135-residue transmembrane protein. The gene is disrupted in six patients with X;autosome translocations or submicroscopic deletions; nine patients had point mutations. The gene is expressed in keratinocytes, hair follicles, and sweat glands, and in other adult and fetal tissues. The pr

Rehabilitation of the edentulous maxilla complicated by combination syndrome with an implant overdenture: a case report.

The treatment of the edentulous jaws with complete dentures is determined individually and often is unpredictable. Implant-assisted overdentures are a significant improvement over conventional complete dentures in terms of patient comfort and function. Combination syndrome refers to a dramatic exaggeration of maxillary alveolar resorption leading to a more complicated rehabilitation. This article reviews how the edentulous maxilla can be rehabilitated with an implant-assisted overdenture. A case report is presented which utilizes a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufactured milled titan

Autogenous bone grafts in the esthetic zone: optimizing the procedure using piezosurgery.

Soft and hard tissue defects pose a therapeutic challenge in modern implant dentistry. There are a multitude of surgical techniques available, and it is necessary to match the problem with the solution. This report describes the reconstruction of the alveolar ridge in the esthetic zone with the help of autogenous bone blocks harvested from the chin that were shaped to fit and stabilized at the recipient site. The procedures were performed using Piezosurgery, which made it possible to introduce surgical modifications and had a significant impact on the accuracy of the procedure. An observation
