Immediate and persistent efficacy of sarolaner (Simparica™) against Haemaphysalis elliptica on dogs.

BACKGROUND: The southern African yellow dog tick, Haemaphysalis elliptica, occurs in eastern and southern Africa and adults infest domestic and wild carnivores. This tick species is also a vector of the highly virulent Babesia rossi pathogen, the causative agent of canine babesiosis in sub-Saharan Africa. Sustained high levels of efficacy of a parasiticide are not only important in protecting dogs against the direct effects of tick infestation, but also in reducing the risk of tick-borne diseases. Sarolaner (Simparica™ chewable tablets) has been reported to be effective against the major tick

Molecular evidence for the transovarial passage of Babesia gibsoni in Haemaphysalis hystricis (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks from Taiwan: a novel vector for canine babesiosis.

BACKGROUND: Babesia gibsoni is the predominant tick-borne protozoan blood parasite affecting dogs throughout the Oriental region. Babesia gibsoni is transmitted by Haemaphysalis longicornis, whereas a similar role has been suggested for Rhipicephalus sanguineus. Haemaphysalis longicornis does not occur in Taiwan, but R. sanguineus is widely distributed on dogs. However, clinical cases of babesiosis are mainly restricted to the northern part of the island. The discrepancy between tick distribution and clinical cases stimulated us to investigate the tick species distribution on dogs in northern

Prevalence, risk factors and vectors identification of bovine anaplasmosis and babesiosis in and around Jimma town, Southwestern Ethiopia.

Among tick-borne diseases, bovine anaplasmosis and babesiosis are considered to be one of the most important in ruminants worldwide, causing significant economic losses in tropical and subtropical areas. This cross-sectional study was therefore undertaken from November 2016 to April 2017 with the objectives to assess the prevalence and potential risk factors associated with bovine anaplasmosis and babesiosis and also to identify the vectors involved in transmission of these diseases in and around Jimma town, south western Ethiopia. A simple random sampling technique was employed for selecting

A snapshot of the microbiome of blood and ticks of captive cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) from selected conservation facilities in South Africa.

Cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with populations declining across their native range due to anthropogenic pressures. To support conservation, breeding programs have been established in South Africa and globally. However, captivity introduces new ecological challenges, including increased exposure to ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TBPs). Translocation of cheetahs may further facilitate the spread of pathogens, potentially affecting animal health and introducing infections into new environments. Despite these risks, little is known about the blood and

Characterization of Proteus mirabilis isolated from ticks collected in Isiolo and Kilifi Counties, Kenya.

Proteus mirabilis is a zoonotic pathogen primarily associated with urinary tract infections but also implicated in systemic infections. While its clinical importance is well-established, its potential reservoirs and transmission routes remain underexplored, particularly in arthropod vectors. This study set out to determine the prevalence of P. mirabilis in the form of viable minimal infectivity rate in ticks collected from Isiolo and Kilifi Counties in Kenya. Ticks were sampled from cattle, camels, sheep, and goats. The collected ticks were surface sterilized and homogenized using zirconia bea

Tick repellents and acaricides of botanical origin: a green roadmap to control tick-borne diseases?

Arthropods are dangerous vectors of agents of deadly diseases, which may hit as epidemics or pandemics in the increasing world population of humans and animals. Among them, ticks transmit more pathogen species than any other group of blood-feeding arthropods worldwide. Thus, the effective and eco-friendly control of tick vectors in a constantly changing environment is a crucial challenge. A number of novel routes have been attempted to prevent and control tick-borne diseases, including the development of (i) vaccines against viruses vectored by ticks; (ii) pheromone-based control tools, with s

Closing the gaps between genotype and phenotype in Rickettsia rickettsii.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) caused by Rickettsia rickettsii is a severe rickettsiosis that occurs in nearly every state of the continental USA. RMSF is endemic in Central and Southern America, with recent well-documented cases in Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Brazil, and Argentina. RMSF is the most malignant among known rickettsioses causing severe multiorgan dysfunction and high case fatality rates, which can reach 73% in untreated cases. Variations in pathogenic biotypes of R. rickettsii isolates have been described, and potential correlations of these differences to various

Phylogenetic Differentiation of Rickettsia parkeri Reveals Broad Dispersal and Distinct Clustering within North American Strains.

The tick-borne pathogen Rickettsia parkeri causes a mild rickettsiosis, with cases reported from several countries to its known distribution in the Americas. Molecular analyses have identified a clear distinction between strains of R. parkeri sensu stricto (s. s.) and R. parkeri sensu lato (s. l.) as well as separation between North American and South American R. parkeri s. s. strains. To expand on this previous work, we developed a multilocus sequence typing analysis with two aims: first, to investigate the genetic diversity within strains of North American R. parkeri s. s., and second, to fu

An Entry-Triggering Protein of Ehrlichia Is a New Vaccine Candidate against Tick-Borne Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis.

Ehrlichia chaffeensis is an obligatory intracellular bacterium that causes human monocytic ehrlichiosis, an emerging disease transmitted by the Lone Star tick, Amblyomma americanum. E. chaffeensis outer membrane protein entry triggering protein of Ehrlichia (EtpE) is necessary for bacterial entry into human cells. We investigated the role of EtpE in transmission of the bacteria from tick to human cells and whether or not vaccination with EtpE can prevent transmission of ehrlichiae from ticks to mammals. An antiserum against the recombinant C terminus of EtpE (rEtpE-C), which binds a mammalian

In search of the Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus in the western-central regions of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

The southern cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, is an economically important tick that parasitises cattle and is found on other host species if they graze with cattle. The R. (B.) microplus is a highly adapted tick species prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. In Africa, it has expanded its range and was reported to supersede the native tick, R. (B.) decoloratus. The objective of the study was to determine the distribution of R. (B.) microplus under different ecological zones in the western-central regions of Eastern Cape Province. Engorged adult blue ticks

Rejection of ticks from guinea pigs by anti-hapten-antibody-mediated degranulation of basophils at cutaneous basophil hypersensitivity sites: role of mediators other than histamine.

Previous studies have established that recruitment of basophils to sites of tick feeding in guinea pigs is required to effect immune resistance. In the current study, actively sensitized guinea pigs treated three times daily with H-1 (mepyramine) and H-2 (cimetidine) histamine receptor antagonists, during the challenge tick infestation period, expressed normal resistance to Amblyomma americanum larvae. Similarly, naive guinea pigs treated with anti-histamines four times daily, beginning 7 days before transfer of immune serum and tick challenge and continuing through the tick infestation period

Urban ecology of hosts and vectors of Rickettsia in a rickettsiosis-endemic city of the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico.

Rickettsioses are vector-borne zoonotic diseases that occur in urban environments. Currently, they are associated with the presence of domestic and synanthropic animals, the ectoparasites that they harbor, and their local habitat. The implementation of prevention actions relies on the understanding of the local ecology of interactions between hosts, vector species, and the etiologic agents. In this context, this study aimed to explore and describe the occurrence of infected mammals and their ectoparasites in human urban dwellings, and those characteristics of urban dwellings associated to the

Mites and ticks of reptiles and amphibians in Brazil.

This study focuses on the parasitic associations of mites and ticks infesting reptiles and amphibians through a multifocal approach. Herein, reptiles (n= 3,596) and amphibians (n= 919) were examined to ensure representativeness of the Brazilian herpetofauna megadiversity. The overall prevalence was calculated to better understand which were the preferred hosts for each order of Acari (Trombidiformes, Mesostigmata and Ixodida), as well as to determine which orders frequently parasitize reptiles and amphibians in Brazil, and their host specificity. Infestation rates were calculated [prevalence,

Tick-borne pathogens in small mammals from the Pantanal biome, Brazil.

The order Piroplasmida (e.g., Babesia, Theileria, Cytauxzoon, and Rangelia) and order Eucoccidiorida, Suborder Adelorina (e.g., Hepatozoon) comprise protozoa of the phylum Apicomplexa. At the same time, the Anaplasmataceae family (Order Rickettsiales) encompasses important bacterial pathogens, notably the genera Anaplasma and Ehrlichia. All these genera of agents have pathogenic species transmitted to vertebrate hosts via ticks and pose significant economic, veterinary, and medical concerns. Biological samples of small mammals (Rodentia and Didelphiomorphia) collected between 2015 and 2018, as

The bacterial biome of ticks and their wildlife hosts at the urban-wildland interface.

Advances in sequencing technologies have revealed the complex and diverse microbial communities present in ticks (Ixodida). As obligate blood-feeding arthropods, ticks are responsible for a number of infectious diseases that can affect humans, livestock, domestic animals and wildlife. While cases of human tick-borne diseases continue to increase in the northern hemisphere, there has been relatively little recognition of zoonotic tick-borne pathogens in Australia. Over the past 5 years, studies using high-throughput sequencing technologies have shown that Australian ticks harbour unique and div

Control of ixodid ticks and prevention of tick-borne diseases in the United States: The prospect of a new Lyme disease vaccine and the continuing problem with tick exposure on residential properties.

In the United States, exposure to human-biting ixodid ticks can occur while spending time on residential properties or in neighborhood green spaces as well as during recreational or occupational activities on public lands. Human-biting tick species collectively transmit >15 species of pathogenic microorganisms and the national burden of tick-borne diseases is increasing. The prospect of a new Lyme disease vaccine for use in humans provides hope for substantial reduction in the >450,000 estimated annual cases of Lyme disease but this breakthrough would not reduce cases of other tick-borne disea

Epidemiological investigation and genetic characterization of Coxiella burnetii carried by parasitic ticks in the southeastern coastal region of China.

BACKGROUND: The pathogen of Q fever, Coxiella burnetii, can persist in the environment for yearsand it can form infectious aerosols that facilitate long-distance airborne transmission of Q fever under certain conditions. Ticks are obligate hematophagous ectoparasites with a broad host range. Accumulating evidence suggests that, within natural ecosystems, ticks may contribute to the maintenance and circulation of Coxiella burnetii among wildlife and livestock, thereby representing a potential component of its transmission cycle. In recent years, cases of Q fever have been reported in Fujian Pro
