Effect of virtual reality-based visual training for myopia control in children: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: To assess the efficacy and safety of virtual reality-based visual training (VRVT) in myopia control among children. METHODS: The randomized, parallel-group, single-blind clinical trial conducted at the Department of Ophthalmology of Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital enrolled 65 low-myopic children (aged 8 to 13 years) with cycloplegic spherical equivalent (SE) between - 0.50 and - 3.00 diopters (D), astigmatism less than - 1.00 D, anisometropia less than 1.50D, and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) more than 0.0 logarithm (LogMAR) of the minimum angle of resolution. Associations between visual function and magnitude of refractive error for emmetropic to moderately hyperopic 4- and 5-year-old children in the Vision in Preschoolers - Hyperopia in Preschoolers Study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate associations between visual function and the level of uncorrected hyperopia in 4- and 5-year-old children without strabismus or amblyopia. METHODS: Children with spherical equivalent (SE) cycloplegic refractive error of -0.75 to +6.00 on eligibility testing for the Vision in Preschoolers-Hyperopia in Preschoolers (VIP-HIP) study were included. Children were grouped as emmetropic (<1D SE myopia or hyperopia), low hyperopic (+1 to <+3D SE) or moderate hyperopic (+3 to +6D SE). Children with anisometropia or astigmatism (≥1D), amblyopia or strabismus were excluded. Visual fu

The measurement and treatment of suppression in amblyopia.

Amblyopia, a developmental disorder of the visual cortex, is one of the leading causes of visual dysfunction in the working age population. Current estimates put the prevalence of amblyopia at approximately 1-3%(1-3), the majority of cases being monocular(2). Amblyopia is most frequently caused by ocular misalignment (strabismus), blur induced by unequal refractive error (anisometropia), and in some cases by form deprivation. Although amblyopia is initially caused by abnormal visual input in infancy, once established, the visual deficit often remains when normal visual input has been restored

[Do prism corrections according to H.-J. Haase affect ocular prevalence?].

BACKGROUND: For prism correction of associated phoria (at 5-6 m viewing distance), Hans-Joachim Haase developed--among other tests--the prevalence test, which consists of a central fixation target and two triangles that appear stereoscopically about 1.5 m in front of or behind the fixation target; the vertex of each triangle is directed towards the centre of the fixation target. Only when both eyes contribute equally to the perception of visual directions do the triangles appear centred (equivalence), while any perceived horizontal offset between the triangles and fixation target indicates a p

Interocular asymmetry and ocular biometric patterns in pediatric high myopia: implications for early risk stratification.

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical and ocular biometric characteristics of high myopia in children and adolescents, analyze the relationship between age and axial length (AL) and axial ratio (AL/CR), identify high-risk structural populations, and evaluate binocular asymmetry and follow-up progression. METHODS: We retrospectively extracted data from the outpatient medical record system of our hospital, including patients whose age at the last follow-up was less than 18 years and whose spherical equivalent (SE) of at least one eye was ≤ -6.00D. The last follow-up data were used as the main analy

Femtosecond LASIK combined with astigmatic keratotomy for the correction of refractive errors after penetrating keratoplasty.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcomes of femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) compared to combined LASIK and astigmatic keratotomy in the treatment of refractive errors following penetrating keratoplasty. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on 18 eyes of 16 patients who underwent LASIK for visual rehabilitation after penetrating keratoplasty. Seven eyes (38.8%) had undergone paired relaxing incisions with topographic guidance prior to LASIK performance. RESULTS: Preoperative uncorrected visual acuity was 20/100 or worse in 13 eyes (72.2%) and b

Analysis of retina, choroid, and microvascular structures in amblyopic patients using OCT and OCTA.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate structural and microvascular changes in amblyopic eyes using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), and to compare these findings with those of fellow eyes and healthy individuals. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional controlled study. Retinal and choroidal structures were examined using the Spectralis OCT device (Spectralis, Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany), and vascular analyses were performed with the Topcon Triton SS-OCT (Topcon Triton, Tokyo, Japan). Structural parameters such as macular t

Two Surgical Approaches for Intraocular Lens Dislocation: Pars Plana Vitrectomy Versus Core Vitrectomy with Lens Exchange.

PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy and safety of core vitrectomy and pars plana vitrectomy for lens exchange in patients with intraocular lens dislocation. METHODS: This is a retrospective study conducted at one eye center in Zurich, Switzerland. We reviewed 124 eyes with dislocated intraocular lens undergoing lens exchange carried out by two surgeons between 03/2016 and 12/2019 (45 months). Intraocular pressure (IOP) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were analyzed preoperatively and at 5 time points up to 12 months after lens exchange. Data on postoperative complications were collected.

PURPOSE: The aim was to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of refractive errors (REs) and the effective spectacle coverage in Emiratis and non-Emiratis in Dubai. DESIGN: The Dubai Eye Health Survey was a population-based cross-sectional study of participants aged 40 years or older. METHODS: Distance and near visual acuity (VA), and noncycloplegic automated refraction were tested according to a standardized protocol. Effectiveness of a Binocular Video Game vs Placebo Video Game for Improving Visual Functions in Older Children, Teenagers, and Adults With Amblyopia: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Binocular amblyopia treatment using contrast-rebalanced stimuli showed promise in laboratory studies and requires clinical trial investigation in a home-based setting. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of a binocular video game with a placebo video game for improving visual functions in older children and adults. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The Binocular Treatment of Amblyopia Using Videogames clinical trial was a multicenter, double-masked, randomized clinical trial. Effect of a Binocular iPad Game vs Part-time Patching in Children Aged 5 to 12 Years With Amblyopia: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: A binocular approach to treating anisometropic and strabismic amblyopia has recently been advocated. OBJECTIVE: To compare visual acuity (VA) improvement in children with amblyopia treated with a binocular iPad game vs part-time patching. Purpose: To assess the prevalence of alternate etiology/co-existing pathology among patients with amblyopia, and to characterize factors contributing to over-diagnosis of amblyopia. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed records of children (from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2019) who were initially diagnosed as "amblyopia" but later an alternate diagnosis for subnormal vision was established.
