A cross-sectional study of intestinal parasitoses in dogs and children of the periurban area of La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina): Zoonotic importance and implications in public health.

A cross-sectional study was performed between school term dates 2014 and 2015 to diagnose intestinal parasites in dogs and children living with them. The socio-environmental characteristics and hygiene practices of the children were also evaluated in terms of risk factors for parasitic infection of periurban neighbourhoods of La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina). Serial coproparasitological samples of 78 dogs and 211 children were analysed by means of concentration and flotation techniques. Socio-environmental variables and hygiene practices of children were evaluated through semi-structured que

Paradoxical helminthiasis and giardiasis in Cape Town, South Africa: epidemiology and control.

BACKGROUND: South Africa has endorsed a World Health Assembly (WHA) resolution calling for control of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs). In Cape Town, services and housing that exist in old-established suburbs should minimise the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections, even when residents are poor. Where families live in shacks in densely-populated areas without effective sanitation, more than 90% of children can be infected by STHs. Intestinal parasitic infection in children in post-disaster situations years after earthquake.

BACKGROUND: Two earthquakes in the north-west region of Turkey destroyed 80% of the houses and schools in Duzce in 1999. This study was conducted to determine the parasitic infection rate associated with the post-earthquake unhealty living conditions and related epidemiological risk factors. METHODS: Two populations living and studying in different socioeconomic conditions as a result of the earthquake were compared: Group 1 (study group) consisted of 326 children living and studying in transitory houses and classes. Group 2 (control) consisted of 127 children living in normal houses and stud

Molecular phylogeny of the pinworms of mice, rats and rabbits, and its use to develop molecular beacon assays for the detection of pinworms in mice.

Though pinworm infestation has been prevalent since the early years of laboratory animal medicine, the genomes of these parasites have not yet been sequenced. The authors used high-fidelity polymerase chain reaction to amplify a large portion of the ribosomal gene complex of four pinworm species commonly found in lab rodents and rabbits (Aspiculuris tetraptera, Passalurus ambiguus, Syphacia muris and Syphacia obvelata). They determined DNA sequences for these complexes and carried out phylogenetic analysis. Using this information, the authors developed real-time molecular beacon assays for pin

Characterization of rDNA sequences from Syphacia obvelata, Syphacia muris, and Aspiculuris tetraptera and development of a PCR-based method for identification.

To differentiate the morphologically similar pinworms of the common laboratory rodents, such as Syphacia obvelata and Syphacia muris, we amplified and sequenced the region spanning the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-1), 5.8S gene, and ITS-2 of the ribosomal DNA followed by designing of species-specific primers for future use in the identification of the worms. It was observed that S. obvelata, S. muris and Aspiculuris tetraptera can be differentiated from each other based on their rDNA sequences. This is the first report of the ITS-1, 5.8S, and ITS-2 of the rDNA of the three aforementioned

Toxicity evaluation of prophylactic treatments for mites and pinworms in mice.

The detection of external and internal parasites in laboratory mice is a particularly problematic aspect of animal health evaluation. Because these organisms must be detected by direct examination of the feces or hair coat, low-level infestation or sporadic shedding can make them difficult to detect, thereby undermining confidence that negative reports are truly negative. Prophylactic treatment of suspect colonies with anthelminthics and/or insecticides may therefore be indicated under some circumstances. However, when considering the use of prophylactic treatments, the potential for toxicity

Sigmoid volvulus and incidental enterobiasis in a young adult: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Sigmoid volvulus is a disease that typically occurs in elderly patients with chronic constipation and an elongated sigmoid mesentery. Its occurrence in previously healthy young adults is uncommon, often with delayed diagnosis, and may coexist with under-recognized predisposing factors. In this case, family clustering of vague gastrointestinal symptoms and a coexisting parasitic infestation are most likely incidental rather than causative. CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy young Saudi woman presented with 2 weeks of intermittent colicky abdominal pain, low-volume diarrhea, an

Prevalence and risk factors of intestinal parasitic infections among preschool and school-aged children in Egypt: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are a major public health concern, particularly among children in low- and middle-income countries, where limited resources and data hinder effective interventions. This meta-analysis consolidates current evidence on the prevalence of IPIs among preschool and school-aged children in Egypt, identifies key risk factors, and examines trends in prevalence over time. METHODS: Six databases (African Journals Online, African Index Medicus, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science) were systematically searched from January 1, 2010, to Jan

Prevalence and associated factors of intestinal parasitic infections in the Badi indigenous communities of Western Nepal.

Despite years of a national deworming campaign, the incidence of intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) remains relatively high among certain ethnic groups, with lifestyle factors distinct from those of the general population. Despite existing studies on the prevalence of IPIs, there is limited research exploring the contextual associated factors within the Badi Indigenous community. Our objective in this study was to assess the prevalence of IPIs in the indigenous Badi community of Gurbhakot Municipality, Surkhet, Nepal, considering socioeconomic, lifestyle, and behavioral factors. A total of

Investigation of Parasites in Food Handlers in Turkey.

Increasing world population parallelly also brings an increase in food production and consumption. As food consumption increases, so do foodborne infections. In cases where adequate food safety and hygiene is not provided in places such as restaurants, dormitories, prisons, hospitals where mass feeding is made outside the home, many parasitic agents can be transmitted to people through food. People working in the food processing and distribution sector and who are in the position of porters play an important role in the spread of parasites, as they can transmit parasitic agents to food through

Schistosomiasis and Soil Transmitted Helminths Distribution in Benin: A Baseline Prevalence Survey in 30 Districts.

In 2013, Benin developed strategies to control neglected tropical diseases and one of the first step was the disease mapping of the entire country in order to identify endemic districts of schistosomiasis and soil transmitted helminths (STH). This study was carried out in 30 of the 77 districts of Benin. Of these 30 districts 22 were previously treated for Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) using the Ivermectin and Albendazole combination. In each district, five schools were selected and 50 children aged 8 to 14 years were sampled in each school, making a total of 250 children sampled in the district.

The Interaction of Deworming, Improved Sanitation, and Household Flooring with Soil-Transmitted Helminth Infection in Rural Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: The combination of deworming and improved sanitation or hygiene may result in greater reductions in soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection than any single intervention on its own. We measured STH prevalence in rural Bangladesh and assessed potential interactions among deworming, hygienic latrines, and household finished floors. METHODOLOGY: We conducted a cross-sectional survey (n = 1,630) in 100 villages in rural Bangladesh to measure three exposures: self-reported deworming consumption in the past 6 months, access to a hygienic latrine, and household flooring material. We col
