Tołpa Torf Preparation (TTP) induces interferon and tumor necrosis factor production in human peripheral blood leukocytes.

Tołpa Torf Preparation (TTP) is a natural immunomodulating drug registered in Poland for use in humans. TTP is a biologically active low molecular weight fraction of an extract from peat containing organic substances, primary bound sugars, amino-acids, uronic and huminic acids and mineral salts. The toxicity of TTP is remarkably low, eg. cytotoxicity (CD50) for human peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) is 1-9 mg/ml. We have discovered that TTP is an interferon (IFN) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inducer in human PBL. The IFN and TNF response of the PBL cultures was dose dependent. The optimal

Analysis of interactions between pharmaceuticals and humic acid: Characterization using entrapment and high-performance affinity microcolumns.

The presence of pharmaceuticals as microcontaminants in the environment has become of particular concern given the growing increase in water reuse and recycling to promote global sustainability of this resource. Pharmaceuticals can often undergo reversible interactions with soluble dissolved organic material such as humic acid, which may be an important factor in determining the bioavailability and effects of these compounds in the environment. In this study, high-performance affinity microcolumns containing non-covalently entrapped and immobilized humic acid are used to examine the binding st

[The ultrastructural organization of the liver of rats with experimental hepatitis after drinking mineral water containing humic acids].

We undertook the ultrastructural analysis of liver parenchyma taken from male rats with experimental hepatitis induced by the administration of paracetamol at a dose of 1000 mg per 1 kg body weight either following a course of drinking mineral water containing humic acids at a concentration of 20 mg/sq. decimeter) or 14 days after the termination of the drug action (the after-effect phase). It was shown that the consumption of mineral water during 21 days resulted in the modification of the ultrastructural organization of hepatocytes apparent as the increased amount of cisterns in the granulos

Humic acid aggregation in zero-valent iron systems and its effects on trichloroethylene removal.

The influence of natural organic matter on contaminant removal by Fe(0) systems has been of increasing concern. Recent studies have shown that, in addition to direct sorption on the Fe(0) surfaces, humic acid complexation with dissolved iron released from corrosion results in the formation of colloids and aggregates in solution that may affect contaminant removal. High-pressure size-exclusion chromatographic analyses revealed increasing molecular weights of dissolved humic acids with reaction time. Humic acid aggregation occurred across a wide range of molecular weight fractions. Fourier trans

The role of sorption and bacteria in mercury partitioning and bioavailability in artificial sediments.

This study compared the relative importance of three types of sorption (organic matter-particle, mercury-organic matter and mercury-particle) in controlling the overall mercury partitioning and bioavailability in sediments. We found that all three types of sorption were important for both inorganic mercury (Hg) and methylated mercury (MeHg). Mercury-particle sorption was more important than mercury-fulvic acid (FA) sorption in increasing the mercury concentrations with increasing aging. Bioavailability (quantified by gut juice extraction from sipunculans) was mainly controlled by mercury-parti

Adsorption of Cry1Ab protein isolated from Bt transgenic rice on bentone, kaolin, humic acids, and soils.

Adsorption on a soil matrix of the insecticidal protein from Bacillus thuringiensis ( Bt) transgenic plants affects their accumulation and release and, hence, bioavailability in soil. Cry1Ab protein isolated from Bt transgenic rice was used to evaluate the adsorption and desorption on bentone, kaolin, and humic acids (HAs). The adsorption equilibrium of Cry1Ab protein was reached within 1-2 h for bentone and kaolin and within 4-8 h for HAs. The adsorption isotherms were better described by linear expressions ( R (2) >/= 0.973) rather than by the Freundlich model. No saturation was observed, ev

Effects of sediment composition on inorganic mercury partitioning, speciation and bioavailability in oxic surficial sediments.

Artificially prepared sediments were used to assess the effects of sediment composition on inorganic Hg partitioning, speciation and bioavailability. Organic coating in sediment greatly increased the Hg partitioning and the amount of bioavailable Hg bound with the clay and the Fe and Mn oxides, but had little effect on that bound with the quartz and calcium carbonate as a result of weaker binding of humic acids and fulvic acids. The clay content increased the concentration of Hg in the sediments but inhibited the gut juice extraction due to the strong binding of Hg-organic matter (OM) complexe

Multiresidue analysis of pesticides using new laminar extraction disks and liquid chromatography and application to the French priority list.

The national French lists of priority pesticides to be monitored in drinking and/or surface water contain various pesticides with a wide range of physico-chemical properties and can be modified on a regional scale with the addition of other pesticides, depending on local agricultural usage. A multiresidue extraction method is presented using new disk formats engineered for high throughput that are particularly well adapted to the extraction of compounds from high volumes of dirty samples. However, because of the occurrence of very polar and very apolar compounds in the lists, two procedures ar

Elucidating hydrogen bonding and synergistic adsorption mechanisms of morphine on deep eutectic solvent-functionalized biochar through machine learning and density functional theory.

Adsorbent materials effectively separated psychoactive substances from the ambient medium through adsorption, serving as a sustainable removal strategy. In this study, a novel magnetic biochar was developed using waste shrimp shells as the raw material, through hydrochloric acid activation, Fe doping, pyrolysis, and deep eutectic solvent (DES) functionalization. The prepared adsorbents (MSBC-PG, MSBC-PA, MSBC-LA) possessed a hierarchical pore structure and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. Among them, MSBC-PG exhibited a BET surface area of 176.9 m2 g-1, a total pore volume of 0.25

PFAS uptake by lettuce: Roles of PFAS properties, co-present organic acids, and nanoplastics.

The accumulation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food crops poses a significant food safety and human health risk, yet studies on the accumulation of PFAS in food crops in conditions that more realistically represent a growth environment with various co-occurring chemicals are still lacking. This study investigated the accumulation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), and perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS) by lettuce in a hydroponic system in the co-presence of polystyrene nanoplastics (NPs, 300 nm) and/or three prevalent organic acids [hum

Design parameters and electrical conductivity shape dissolved organic matter aromaticity in full-scale constructed wetlands.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) often serve as final polishing systems before wastewater enters receiving waters, where active biogeochemical reactions can reshape dissolved organic matter (DOM) and influence various ecological processes in downstream aquatic systems. However, DOM variations and their associated factors in full-scale CWs remain poorly constrained. Combining a field survey of 57 sites across 14 full-scale CWs in Shandong, China, with laboratory experiments, this study examined changes in DOM characteristics, the key factors associated with these changes, and their potential roles. Humic acid from vermicompost effectively regulates the redox status and mitigates the progression of experimental periodontitis.

The progression of periodontal disease (PD) involves the action of oxidative stress mediators. Antioxidant agents may potentially attenuate the development of this condition. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the effects of different doses of humic acid (HA), extracted from biomass vermicomposting, on redox status and parameters related to PD progression in rats. Fifty-four adult male Wistar rats were distributed into six experimental groups (control; PD; PD + 40 mg/kg of HA; PD + 80 mg/kg of HA; PD + 160 mg/kg of HA; PD + 320 mg/kg of HA). HA was administered by gavage for 28 days, and PD was induce

Influence of Tetrabromobisphenol-A on the Fate and Behavior of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Affected by Salts, Humic Acid, and Bovine Serum Albumin in Water Systems.

The environmental release of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) may have consequences for ecosystems. The behavior and environmental effects of ZnO-NPs could change due to their interactions with other existing substances. This research explored how the presence of coexisting organic pollutants (like tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA)), electrolytes (such as NaCl and CaCl2), natural organic materials (including humic acid (HA)), and bovine serum albumin (BSA) in simulated water affected the behavior of ZnO-NPs. Various characterization techniques were used to analyze the size, shape, purity, crysta

Biodegradable acids for pyrite depression and green flotation separation - an overview.

Exponential increasing demands for base metals have made meaningful processing of their quite low-grade (>1%) resources. Froth flotation is the most important physicochemical pretreatment technique for processing low-grade sulfide ores. In other words, flotation separation can effectively upgrade finely liberated base metal sulfides based on their surface properties. Various sulfide surface characters can be modified by flotation surfactants (collectors, activators, depressants, pH regulators, frothers, etc.). However, these reagents are mostly toxic. Therefore, using biodegradable flotation r

Fate of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in a full-scale restaurant food waste treatment plant: Implications of the roles beyond heavy metals and mobile genetic elements.

Is our food safe and free of the crisis of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance (AR)? And will the derived food waste (FW) impose AR risk to the environment after biological treatment? This study used restaurant FW leachates flowing through a 200 tons-waste/day biological treatment plant as a window to investigate the fate of antibiotics and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) during the acceptance and treatment of FW. Sulfonamides (sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole) and quinolones (ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, ofloxacin) were detected during FW treatment, while tetracyclines, macrolides and ch

Characterization of organosulfates from the photooxidation of isoprene and unsaturated fatty acids in ambient aerosol using liquid chromatography/(-) electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.

In the present study, we have characterized in detail the MS(2) and MS(3) fragmentation behaviors, using electrospray ionization (ESI) in the negative ion mode, of previously identified sulfated isoprene secondary organic aerosol compounds, including 2-methyltetrols, 2-methylglyceric acid, 2-methyltetrol mononitrate derivatives, glyoxal and methylglyoxal. A major fragmentation pathway for the deprotonated molecules of the sulfate esters of 2-methyltetrols and 2-methylglyceric acid and of the sulfate derivatives of glyoxal and methylglyoxal is the formation of the bisulfate [HSO(4)](-) anion, w

Technological advancements and challenges in the analysis of fluoroquinolone antibiotic environmental residues.

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs) are widely used broad-spectrum antimicrobials, and their incomplete metabolism and continuous discharge have led to their frequent detection in surface water, groundwater, wastewater, and aquaculture systems. Although generally present at ng/L-μg/L levels, environmental FQ residues may affect microbial communities, aquatic organisms, and the spread of antimicrobial resistance. Accurate determination of FQs in environmental waters remains challenging because dissolved organic matter, humic substances, metal ions, proteins, surfactants, and suspended particles c

Effects of different iron compounds on the acclimation of Feammox sludge: Nitrogen-iron transformation, sludge physicochemical properties, and microbial communities.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled with Fe(III) reduction (Feammox) plays a critical role in the natural nitrogen cycle, but the differential regulatory mechanisms of various iron sources that influence Feammox sludge acclimation remain systematically unexplored in wastewater treatment. In this study, four iron compounds (FeCl3, Fe2O3, Fe3O4, and Fe(OH)3) were individually introduced into anaerobic sequencing batch reactors to initiate Feammox processes. After 126 days of enrichment, 48.18 %, 29.38 %, 27.56 %, and 32.18 % of NH4+-N removal efficiencies were achieved, respectively. Notably, t
