A comprehensive ban on nuclear testing.

Our foregoing analysis of the role of a comprehensive test ban leads us to the following conclusions. 1) A CTB by itself will have little direct effect on the arms race between the superpowers. It would not hinder their nuclear arms production and deployment nor would it necessarily present a significant obstacle to the development of new nuclear weapons systems, despite limiting the development of new nuclear warhead designs. It can hardly make a dent in the destructive capability of the superpowers or in their ability to step up the pace of the arms race. 2) The chief merits of a CTB reside

First-time postpartum motherhood during armed conflict: experiences, challenges, coping, and support needs among women with mobilized partners.

Armed conflict creates profound challenges for first-time mothers navigating the early postpartum period without the presence of their partners. The abrupt loss of expected support, combined with heightened fear and prolonged uncertainty, intensifies emotional vulnerability and disrupts maternal adjustment to early parenthood. Despite extensive research on trauma and crisis, little is known about how large-scale armed conflict shapes first-time mothers' lived postpartum experiences and their engagement with care systems. This study aimed to explore these experiences among women who gave birth

Burn Pit Smoke Exposure and Sleep Apnea in US Veterans: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Burn pit smoke exposure (BPSE) during military deployment has been linked to long-term cardiorespiratory conditions, but its relationship with sleep apnea (SA) remains unclear. This study examines the association between BPSE and SA using Veterans Health Administration (VHA) electronic medical records (EMR) and the Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry (AHOBPR). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of veterans from AHOBPR with VHA sleep study data. BPSE was classified into quartiles based on the duration of exposure, and SA severity was measured using the Apn

Chitosan-based lifefoam improves survival in lethal noncompressible abdominal bleeding in swine.

BACKGROUND: In military combat settings, noncompressible closed cavity exsanguination is the leading cause of potentially survivable deaths, with no effective treatment available at point of injury. The aim of this study was to assess whether an expanding foam based on hydrophobically modified chitosan (hm-chitosan) may be used as a locally injectable hemostatic agent for the treatment of noncompressible bleeding in a swine model. METHODS: A closed-cavity, grade V hepato-portal injury was created in all animals resulting in massive noncoagulopathic, noncompressible bleeding. Animals received

Comorbidity Patterns of Psychiatric Conditions in Canadian Armed Forces Personnel.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often accompanied by other mental health conditions, including major depressive disorder (MDD), substance misuse disorders, and anxiety disorders. The objective of the current study is to delineate classes of comorbidity and investigate predictors of comorbidity classes amongst a sample of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Regular Force personnel. METHODS: Latent class analyses (LCAs) were applied to cross-sectional data obtained between April and August 2013 from a nationally representative random sample of 6700 CAF Regular Force personnel who dep

Sex differences in predictors of recurrent major depression among current-era military veterans.

Although major depressive disorder (MDD) is a frequent diagnosis among women seeking care in the Veterans Health Administration, little is known about its course. For example, recurrence of MDD and its predictors have been investigated in civilians, but not among female veterans. Because female veterans differ from their civilian counterparts and from male veterans on demographic variables, including race, ethnicity, marital status, and educational level, it is important to identify factors affecting MDD course within this population. We investigated frequency and correlates of recurrent MDD a

Risk of post-traumatic knee osteoarthritis after knee injury in military service members.

PURPOSE: The aims of the present study were: (a) to identify the incidence of osteoarthritis (OA) after a traumatic knee injury; (b) identify the risk of post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) based on the type of injury; and (c) identify the time from injury to OA diagnosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The Expeditionary Medical Encounter Database, containing healthcare utilization for all deployment injuries sustained by military service members, was queried for traumatic knee injuries between 2001 and 2016. Subsequent diagnosis of knee OA was identified, defined as PTOA. Time to knee PTOA diagnosis

Early Infections Complicating the Care of Combat Casualties from Iraq and Afghanistan.

BACKGROUND: During the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, more than 52,000 U.S. military members were wounded in action. The battlefield mortality rate was lower than in past conflicts, however, those surviving often had complex soft tissue and bone injuries requiring multiple surgeries. This report describes the rates, types, and risks of infections complicating the care of combat casualties. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Infection and microbiology data obtained from the Trauma Infectious Disease Outcomes Study (TIDOS), a prospective observational study of infections complicating deployment-related

Improving parental emotion socialization in military families: Results of a randomized controlled trial.

Prior research indicates that children of deployed parents are at risk for emotional problems, suggesting the utility of preventive efforts for military families. Effective parental socialization of children's emotions is protective for children's development, and parental experiential avoidance may impede parental emotion socialization, yet intervention studies in this area are lacking. This study examined the impact of a parenting program, After Deployment Adaptive Parenting Tools (ADAPT), on parental emotion socialization postintervention (6 months postbaseline) and whether intervention eff

Residual sleep disturbances following PTSD treatment in active duty military personnel.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbances, including nightmares and insomnia, are frequently reported symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Insomnia is one of the most common symptoms to persist after evidence-based PTSD treatment. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of sleep disturbances in a sample of active duty military personnel before and after receiving therapy for PTSD in a clinical trial and to explore the associations of insomnia and nightmares with PTSD diagnosis after treatment. METHOD: Sleep parameters were evaluated with the PTSD Checklist in 108 active duty

The effect of enemy combat tactics on PTSD prevalence rates: A comparison of Operation Iraqi Freedom deployment phases in a sample of male and female veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Research suggests that the nature of combat may affect later development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in combat veterans. Studies comparing rates of PTSD across different conflicts indicate that the use of asymmetric or guerilla-style tactics by enemy fighters may result in higher rates of PTSD among U.S. military personnel than the use of symmetric tactics, which mirror tactics used by U.S. forces. Investigations of the association between enemy combat tactics and PTSD across conflicts were limited because of cohort effects and a focus on male veterans. The current study

Occupational exposures and the prevalence of blood-borne pathogens in a deployed setting: data from a US military trauma center in Afghanistan.

OBJECTIVE: Occupational exposures to blood and other bodily fluids occur in approximately 5 per 100 persons every year in US hospitals. Since the provision of health care in the deployed environment poses unique challenges to hospital personnel, it is important to characterize the rates of occupational exposures and understand the prevalence of blood-borne pathogens (BBPs) in host nations. METHODS: A retrospective review of public health and laboratory records at a US military trauma center in Afghanistan from October 1, 2010, to March 31, 2012. RESULTS: A total of 65 occupational exposures

Neurosteroids and self-reported pain in veterans who served in the U.S. Military after September 11, 2001.

OBJECTIVE: Nearly half of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans experience continued pain post-deployment. Several investigations report analgesic effects of allopregnanolone and other neurosteroids in animal models, but few data are currently available focusing on neurosteroids in clinical populations. Allopregnanolone positively modulates GABA(A) receptors and demonstrates pronounced analgesic and anxiolytic effects in rodents, yet studies examining the relationship between pain and allopregnanolone in humans are limited. We thus hypothesized that endogenous allopregnan

Factors Associated With Testicular Cancer Risk Among New American Military Recruits During Wartime.

Testicular cancer (TCa) comprises the majority of peri/postpubertal male neoplasms and has increased in incidence. A review of the literature finds little information on short-term risks associated with mens' occupational choices. The U.S. Army includes a large population in the age range of highest TCa risk. We examined whether combat duty and occupational categories were associated with TCa in this population during a recent period of prevalent combat operations. We employed official medical, administrative and sociodemographic data on 210,483 males new to active-duty service in the U.S. Arm

National trends in mental health outcomes among U.S. combat veterans by war era.

U.S. combat veterans are at elevated risk for adverse mental health outcomes, yet contemporary, nationally representative data across war eras is limited. We analyzed data from the 2025-2026 National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study (NHRVS; total N = 2636), which surveyed a contemporary, nationally representative sample of Vietnam War (n = 404, weighted 33.9%), Gulf War (n = 186, weighted 20.1%), and Iraq/Afghanistan War veterans (n = 341, weighted 45.7%) and compared findings with the 2019-2020 NHRVS cohort. Results revealed that Gulf War and Iraq/Afghanistan veterans were younger, mor

Dried plasma retains hemostatic function and thermal stability during Arctic military operations.

BACKGROUND: Dried plasma offers a practical alternative for remote damage control resuscitation, providing hemostatic support and volume replacement. The Arctic presents challenges that necessitate the need for blood-based resuscitation to extend the "golden hour." To address this, we evaluated the hemostatic and thermal stability of dried plasma following exposure during military Arctic operations. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: OctaplasLG powder kits were deployed with Canadian Armed Forces medical providers during three Arctic operations. Dried plasma was subjected to substantial temperature fl

An Executive Functioning Composite Does Not Moderate the Relationship Between Combat Exposure and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Clusters.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is prevalent among U.S. combat Veterans, and associated with poor health and wellbeing. As combat experiences are likely to significantly modify self-, other-, and society-oriented cognitions and heighten risk for PTSD, examination of related cognitive processes may yield new treatment strategies. The cognitive model of PTSD suggests that persistent threat perceptions contribute to symptom worsening. Thus, cognitive processes of shifting perspectives or generating novel interpretations may be particularly relevant to lessen PTSD symptoms. This cr

Meaning in life moderates the association between morally injurious experiences and suicide ideation among U.S. combat veterans: Results from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study.

OBJECTIVE: Effectively responding to suicide risk among veterans involves further developing understanding of reactions to combat experiences, including life-threatening events, traumatic losses, and morally injurious experiences. An important determinant of whether stressors lead to poor mental health outcomes is the perception of meaning. The current study aimed to determine whether global meaning (i.e., general beliefs, goals, and sense of purpose in life) moderates the relationship between morally injurious experiences and suicide ideation among combat veterans. METHOD: This analysis exam
