Introduction and aim Mucormycosis is a rare but serious angio-invasive infection caused by a group of fungi called mucormycetes and it mainly affects people who are immunocompromised, or patients already infected with other diseases. The dreaded mucormycosis infection has recently gained gross ill-repute for having claimed many lives in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and/or post-COVID-19 patients. Hence a need was felt to study the development of mucormycosis in COVID-19 patients to better prevent and treat this fungal infection in anticipated future waves of the pandemic. This study also aims

Objective: Both rhino-orbital-cerebral mycosis and lethal midline granuloma (LMG) may result in midline destruction. LMG has now been generally considered as a natural killer/T cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKTL-NT) with an association of EBV. Fungi have been detected from the diseased tissues now and then but are often considered as lymphoma-associated infections. We previously reported an ENKTL-NT case with Mucor irregularis, which played a causal role in the disease and was involved in the overexpression of Ki67 and CD56 in the mouse experiment. The present study describes a chronic Rhizopus

Trauma-related necrotizing myocutaneous mucormycosis (NMM) has a high morbidity and mortality in victims of combat-related injuries, geometeorological disasters, and severe burns. Inspired by the observation that several recent clusters of NMM have been associated with extreme mechanical forces (e.g., during tornados), we studied the impact of mechanical stress on Mucoralean biology and virulence in a Drosophila melanogaster infection model. In contrast to other experimental procedures to exert mechanical stress, tornadic shear challenge (TSC) by magnetic stirring induced a hypervirulent pheno

Marine bacteria are a valuable source of bioactive polysaccharides with therapeutic potential. In our previous study, we identified an exopolysaccharide produced by Kocuria sp. strain AG5 (EPSR5) isolated from the Red Sea, and demonstrated that it is a high-molecular weight, acidic heteropolysaccharide rich in sulfate (25.6%) and uronic acid (21.77%) groups. In the current study, we expanded the structural characterization and biological evaluation of EPSR5. GC-MS and HPLC analyses revealed glucose as the major monosaccharide, accompanied by xylose, arabinose, and glucuronic acid, confirming i

We analyzed mucormycosis data from the Zygomyco.net registry (2009-2022), encompassing cases from 16 countries. India, Russia and the Czech Republic provided the largest contributions. India reported the highest case number, consistent with its substantially higher incidence compared to that of high-income countries. Among the 382 patients with mucormycosis, 236 (61.8%) were male (male-to-female ratio 1.6). The median age was 48 years [interquartile range (IQR) 32-60]. There were 59 pediatric patients (median age ranging from < 1 month to 19 years). Diabetes mellitus type 2 was the most common

INTRODUCTION: Hematological patients are at risk of infections. It is unknown whether the pathogenic microbial spectrum differs between HSCT and non-HSCT patients, and whether metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of peripheral blood can be used as a substitute test specimen such as alveolar lavage.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the clinical application value of mNGS in hematological patients with and without HSCT.
RESULTS: Viruses were prevalent pathogens in both non-HSCT (44%) and HSCT (45%) patients, chiefly human cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis has emerged as a rare but frequently fatal invasive fungal disease. Current knowledge on paediatric mucormycosis is based on case reports and small series reported over several decades. Contemporary data on a large cohort of patients is lacking.
METHODS: Two large international registries (Zygomyco.net and FungiScope™) were searched for mucormycosis cases in ≤19 year-old patients. Cases enrolled between 2005 and 2014 were extracted, and dual entries in the two databases merged. Epidemiology, clinical characteristics, diagnostic procedures, therapeutic management and f

OBJECTS: We attempted to evaluate the usefulness of in situ hybridization (ISH) in the specific diagnosis of Aspergillus pulmonary infection.
METHODS: We used an ISH technique using a multiple digoxigenin-incorporating probe, which was constructed by means of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from the 18S ribosomal RNA of Aspergillus fumigatus.
MATERIALS: We studied twelve formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded lung tissue sections from autopsy-confirmed invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) (5 acute myelocytic leukemias, 2 acute lymphocytic leukemias, 2 chronic myelocytic leukemias, 1 adult T

Otomycosis has typically been described as fungal infection of the external auditory canal with infrequent complications involving the middle ear. Because of the dearth of data on the prevalence of Otomycosis in this environment and increased rate of immunosuppression, this study was aimed at finding the prevalence and fungal etiological agents responsible for this condition. Aretrospective review of the laboratory reports of ear swabs of patients that presented with signs and symptoms suggestive of fungal infections of the ear like otorrhoea, otalgia and aural fullness were done. The diagnosi

Invasive mould infections (IMIs), such as invasive aspergillosis or mucormycosis, are a major cause of death in patients with haematological cancer and in patients receiving long-term immunosuppressive therapy. Early diagnosis and prompt initiation of antifungal therapy are crucial steps in the management of patients with IMI. The diagnosis of IMI remains a major challenge, with an increased spectrum of fungal pathogens and a diversity of clinical and radiological presentations within the expanding spectrum of immunocompromised hosts. Diagnosis is difficult to establish and is expressed on a s

Objective: To explore the clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of patients with invasive mucormycosis (IM) after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Methods: The clinical data of IM patients after allo-HSCT in Peking University People's Hospital from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2021 were retrospectively collected and followed up until October 1, 2022. The survival curve was plotted by the Kaplan-Meier method. The multivariate Cox regression model was used to analyze the risk factors affecting the death of patients. Results: Among the 50 patients with

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is an emerging fungal infection that may lead to multi-organ failure, especially in patients with hematological malignancies (HM). We performed a retrospective, cohort study, in five intensive care units (ICU) to assess the outcome of critically ill patients with HM and mucormycosis between 2002 and 2018. The secondary objective was to identify prognostic factors in this setting.
RESULTS: Twenty-six patients were included with a median age of 38 years [IQR, 26-57]). Acute leukemia was the most frequent underlying disease (50%). Nine patients (35%) underwent allogeneic

The antagonistic activities of native Debaryomyces hansenii strains isolated from Danish cheese brines were evaluated against contaminating molds in the dairy industry. Determination of chromosome polymorphism by use of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) revealed a huge genetic heterogeneity among the D. hansenii strains, which was reflected in intra-species variation at the phenotypic level. 11 D. hansenii strains were tested for their ability to inhibit germination and growth of contaminating molds, frequently occurring at Danish dairies, i.e., Cladosporium inversicolor, Cladosporium si

Mucormycosis is a rare and often fatal invasive fungal infection. Disseminated or pulmonary forms are common in patients with immune deficiency while rhinocerebral form is common in diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to evaluate retrospectively the adult mucormycosis cases which were followed up in our hospital between 2007-2010. The cases were evaluated in terms of demographic characteristics, underlying diseases, laboratory, clinical and treatment results. A total of 12 mucormycosis cases (6 were male; age range: 18-74 years; mean age: 50.83 ± 18.27 years) were evaluated. Ten of th

UNLABELLED: Superficial infections of the skin, hair, and nails by fungal dermatophytes are the most prevalent of human mycoses, and many infections are refractory to treatment. As current treatment options are limited, recent research has explored drug synergy with azoles for dermatophytoses. Bisphosphonates, which are approved to treat osteoporosis, can synergistically enhance the activity of azoles in diverse yeast pathogens but their activity has not been explored in dermatophytes or other molds. Market bisphosphonates risedronate, alendronate, and zoledronate (ZOL) were evaluated for anti

INTRODUCTION: Mucormycosis is an opportunistic fungal infection with a high mortality rate. Though typically associated with diabetes and other conditions that affect innate immune function, infections can also be precipitated by conditions such as trauma and burns. Burn patients are particularly susceptible to fungal infections due to the immune dysfunction that often accompany their wounds. Indeed case series have described mucormycosis to occur in patients with burn injuries, however the factors contributing to mortality have not been well described. Thus, the purpose of our review was to i
