The Cleft palate-craniofacial journal : official publication of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association1993eng
Since 1977 cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients with maxillary deficiency have received an interceptive orthopedic treatment consisting of (a) transverse expansion, (b) protraction, and (c) fixed retention. Ideally the treatment should be completed early enough to permit spontaneous eruption of the maxillary permanent incisors into normal occlusion without orthodontic intervention. The early transverse expansion considerably increases space so that unerupted malpositioned incisors spread out spontaneously, creating optimal conditions for eruption and root formation. Dental diagnosis in the clef

Maxillary distraction osteogenesis using intraoral distractors is now one of the standard treatments of maxillary retrusion. This report shows 2 cases of breakage of this internal maxillary distractor in patients with cleft lip and palate; one was observed during the distraction period and the other was during the retention period. The first case required a rotational movement of the distraction segment, and this movement caused the laterally dislocation of the posterior part of the distractor, where the distractor suffered some mechanical forces by mouth opening. In the latter case, breakage

INTRODUCTION: Airway management is a critical and challenging component of emergency care, requiring skilled interventions to ensure safe intubation, particularly in difficult airway scenarios. Early identification is essential to minimize intubation attempts and reduce major airway-related complications. Although several assessment tools and scoring systems have been proposed, their effectiveness as unstructured individual predictors remains uncertain. This study aimed to develop a simple scoring system for predicting difficult airways in the emergency department (ED).
AIM: To develop and pr

INTRODUCTION: Angle Class II malocclusion due to mandibular retrognathia is a common dentofacial deformity. It is well known that mandibular advancement increases pharyngeal airway dimensions. The aim of this study was to evolve a mathematical method for predicting posterior pharyngeal airway space (PAS) changes based on 2D lateral cephalographic radiographs (LCRs) and expected extent of mandibular advancement prior to BSSO.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Linear regression analyses were performed in order to investigate the relation between the posterior airway space and mandibular advancement. LCRs

INTRODUCTION: The craniofacial morphology of subjects with cleft lip and palate differs from that of subjects without clefts. Subjects with bilateral cleft lip and palate tend to have maxillary retrognathism, a smaller mandible with an obtuse gonial angle, greater anterior upper and lower facial heights, and retroclined maxillary incisors. The purposes of this research were to compare the skeletal and upper-airway features of subjects with bilateral cleft lip and palate with the same features in control subjects without clefts and to determine the growth-related changes at different growth sta

This study compares the effects of bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) and distraction osteogenesis (DO) for lengthening the mandible regarding loss of function of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN). In a retrospective cohort study design, the function of the IAN was tested with a Weinstein monofilament 3.22, 1 year after the surgical procedure in 65 patients (35 BSSO; 30 DO). This was defined as the upper limit for normal function. Of 130 IAN studied (70 BSSO, 54%; 60 DO, 46%), nerve function was disturbed in 23 (18%). In this group, 14 cases (61%) had undergone BSSO and 9 (39%) DO. One-
