Role of insulin, insulin-like growth factor-1, hyperglycaemic food and milk consumption in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris.

It is the purpose of this viewpoint article to delineate the regulatory network of growth hormone (GH), insulin, and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) signalling during puberty, associated hormonal changes in adrenal and gonadal androgen metabolism, and the impact of dietary factors and smoking involved in the pathogenesis of acne. The key regulator IGF-1 rises during puberty by the action of increased GH secretion and correlates well with the clinical course of acne. In acne patients, associations between serum levels of IGF-1, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate, dihydrotestosterone, acne les

Relevance of multiparametric skin bioengineering in a prospectively-followed cohort of junior hairdressers.

There is conflicting evidence concerning predictors of individual susceptibility to develop irritant contact dermatitis in wet work. A cohort of initially 92 hairdresser apprentices was prospectively followed for 3 years. The association between anamnestic and clinical findings, and multiparametric skin bioengineering data (transepidermal water loss [TEWL], microcirculation, capacitance, pH, sebum, temperature) was investigated. The observation intervals were 3 months in the 1st year of training and 12 months thereafter. Of the 92 apprentices, 6 had already developed hand dermatitis on 1st exa

Fordyce's granules of the incisor and molar gingiva in F344 rats.

Fordyce's granules were observed in the gingiva of the upper incisor and molar teeth in F344 rats. The data were based on 734 males and 722 females that were used as control and treated animals in 26-week, 65-week, and 2-year studies by the National Toxicology Program. The incidence of Fordyce's granules was markedly different when comparing sex, age, and site of the lesion. Fordyce's granules were very common in the midsagittal gingiva of the upper incisor in males and increased in incidence with age (34.2, 50, and 56.3% in 26-week, 65-week, and 2-year studies, respectively). The granules of

Oral and topical spironolactone in acne treatment: A meta-analysis of effectiveness and safety.

Acne vulgaris (AV) is a common chronic inflammatory skin disorder that commonly lasts from adolescence to adulthood and has serious social and psychological consequences. Current treatments typically use antibacterial drugs, which contributes to the rise in antibacterial drug resistance. Spironolactone, a potassium-sparing diuretic with anti-androgen effects, has been used off-label to treat acne by lowering sebum production. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to assess the safety and efficacy of oral and topical spironolactone in acne treatment. Following PRISMA guidelines, a compl

Impact of environmental pollution on acne: a systematic review.

In an increasingly urbanized world, environmental pollution is recognized for its adverse effects on both systemic and skin health. While its role in conditions such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis is well documented, its impact on acne vulgaris remains less clear. This review aims to evaluate existing literature examining the association between environmental pollutants - such as particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), nitrogen oxides (NO2, NOx) and traffic-related emissions - and the development, severity or exacerbation of acne. A systematic search of peer-reviewed English-language studies pub

Masks trigger facial seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis: evidence from a multicenter, case-control study during COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Wearing masks is an optimal preventive strategy during COVID-19 pandemic, but it may increase facial sebum production. However, few case reports have described seborrheic dermatitis (SeBD) and psoriasis (PsO) flares due to masks. Hence, we conducted a multicenter study to clarify the possibility of increased SeBD and PsO flares in association with mask wearing during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This multicenter study enrolled patients with a diagnosis of facial SeBD and PsO. All dermatological consultations were conducted in teledermatology at baseline (T0) and after 1 month (

A Possible Role of Mycobiome in the Pathophysiology of Acne: Structured Narrative Review and Perspectives.

Acne vulgaris pathogenesis involves complex interactions between sebum hypersecretion, follicular hyperkeratinisation, microbial colonisation and inflammatory cascades. While the bacterial microbiome has been extensively studied, the role of the skin mycobiome, particularly lipophilic Malassezia species, remains less clearly defined in acne-prone sites. To evaluate evidence for skin mycobiome involvement in acne pathogenesis, a structured narrative review was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE and PMC, synthesising findings from 14 cross-sectional studies involving 1650 participants from diverse geog

The Metabolic Revolution in Dermatology: Obesity, Insulin Resistance, and Ultra-Processed Diets as Drivers of Skin Inflammation.

Inflammatory dermatoses are increasingly linked to systemic metabolic factors. Obesity and insulin resistance create a pro-inflammatory milieu that affects the skin. Adipose tissue functions as an endocrine organ secreting adipokines and cytokines that drive chronic inflammation with notable skewing toward T-helper 1 (Th1)/Th17 signaling. Hyperinsulinemia, elevated insulin-like growth factor-1 promote keratinocyte proliferation, sebum production, and autoinflammation, contributing to a multitude of skin diseases including hidradenitis suppurativa, acne, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis (AD), acant

Multi-strain synergistic fermentation of waste biomass with bacterial cellulose fermentation wastewater to prepare sustainable detergents.

Synthetic surfactants threaten the environment and public health due to their difficult degradation and high toxicity, creating a need for low-energy, high-efficiency green alternatives. Preparing natural surfactants is often expensive, inefficient, and complex, while the resource utilization of bacterial cellulose (BC) fermentation wastewater is still tricky. In this study, waste biomass, including pineapple peel and Sapindus mukorossi Gaertn., was combined with BC fermentation wastewater using synergistic fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Lactobacillus sp., and Acetobacter sp. to ext

Exploring the skin as an open window onto neurodegenerative diseases.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), including Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, are major age-related disorders characterized by progressive neuronal degeneration and a decline in cognitive and motor functions. Managing NDDs poses an increasing healthcare challenge as the global population ages. The onset of NDDs is linked to protein misfolding, oxidative stress, dysfunction of mitochondria and lysosomes, and neuroinflammation. Clinical manifestations of NDDs only appear after substantial neuronal damage has already occurred. This underscores the urgent need for accessible tissue bio

Inhibitory Effect of a Novel Non-Steroidal AMPamide on Inflammation and Sebogenesis by Suppressing TLR4 and TLR6-Mediated Signaling Pathway.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that primarily affects areas with increased sebaceous gland activity, and is characterized by erythematous scaly lesions. Malassezia utilizes sebum lipids to produce free fatty acids that may disrupt the epidermal barrier and trigger inflammation in eczematous lesions. However, the pathogenesis and mechanisms underlying the exaggerated inflammatory response and sebogenesis regulation in SD remain unknown. Activation of pattern recognition receptors, including Toll-like receptors (TLRs), is crucial for initiating innate immunity

Effect of interleukin-12 gene expression on insulin resistance in patients with acne vulgaris.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Insulin resistance (IR) is a condition where cells become resistant to insulin, causing impaired glucose uptake and increased blood glucose levels. Interleukin-12 (IL-12), a cytokine, regulates the immune system. High levels of IL-12 can lead to chronic inflammation, exacerbate resistance to insulin, and contribute to type 2 diabetes. Also, link IR to acne vulgaris (AV), as it reduces tissue sensitivity to insulin, causing increased insulin levels and sebum production, which can contribute to acne development. AIM: To explore the role of IL-12 gene expression on IR in AV patients
