Retinal detachment after cataract surgery.

BACKGROUND: A study of the characteristics and the results obtained in 99 consecutive eyes operated on for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment associated with aphakia or pseudophakia in order to find the predictive factors of poor anatomical and functional results. METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed the files of 99 consecutive cases of aphakic and pseudophakic retinal detachment operated on by the same surgeon between January 1992 through July 1993 with a minimum follow-up of 6 months. Multivariate and chi square analysis were carried out. RESULTS: Of the pseudophakic eyes, 25 had a

[Pseudophakic retinal detachment in relation to complications of cataract surgery].

The authors made a retrospective study in a group of 14 patients operated in 1999 on account of pseudophakic detachment of the retina (D.R.). They followed up risk factors of development of D.R. in conjunction with complications of cataract surgery. The investigated factors comprised patients sex and age, type of cataract operation and type of implanted lens, complications of cataract surgery, time interval between cataract surgery and the development of D.R., pre-operative and postoperative visual acuity and type of operation of D.R. In the group there was a significant ratio of men (71.4%),

Phenotypic overlap of familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) with persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) caused by FZD4 mutations in two distinct pedigrees.

PURPOSE: To describe a severe familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) phenotype seen in infancy that resembles persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) caused by mutations in the FZD4 gene in two pedigrees with high intrafamilial variability. METHODS: Three infants presented with features compatible with bilateral PFV. Eye examinations from the affected children and their relatives were reviewed retrospectively (follow-up:18 months-9 years). Mutation screening was performed using direct sequencing of the FZD4, LRP5 and NDP genes. RESULTS: Bilateral retinal folds extending from the optic nerve

[Surgical treatment of very advanced rhegmatogenous retinal detachment].

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is a serious ocular pathology. Therapeutic options are surgical only. Surgery is in advanced stages technically and financially demanding. In this paper, we consider the results operated detachments, which were for their advancement, with respect to the technical possibilities of the present intraocular surgery, on the border of the surgical possibilities. The group consisted of 37 eyes of 37 patients who were followed prospectively and had in the affected eye very advanced (old) rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. As a method to confirtm any visual functions w

[Intraocular silicone oil tamponade. A clinico-pathologic study of 36 enucleated eyes].

BACKGROUND: Previous histological studies have shown that intraocular silicone oil induces irreversible changes in ocular tissues, especially the retina. The purpose of this study was to analyze, in a larger group of enucleated eyes, changes in intraocular tissue after silicone oil injection, dependent on intraocular pressure, how long the oil was in the eye, and the viscosity of intraocular silicone oil. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We did histological examinations on 36 enucleated globes with intraocular silicone oil after vitreoretinal surgery and compared them with 68 enucleated globes treated w

Cystoid macular edema: the apparent role of mechanical factors.

CME is the final common pathway of many intraocular and systemic diseases. It involves the retinal vasculature and often has a choroidal and vitreal component. Obviously, at some level of this complex pathophysiological process, mediators must be involved. The question is whether the characteristic distribution of vascular leakage and retinal edema is best explained by the diffusion of mediators released by from a remote site, as proposed by Miyake (see Miyake et al., 1989), or whether it reflects the distribution of pre-existing anatomical structures causing the local release of mediators by
