Extensive Distribution of the Lyme Disease Bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi Sensu Lato, in Multiple Tick Species Parasitizing Avian and Mammalian Hosts across Canada.

Lyme disease, caused by the spirochetal bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl), is typically transmitted by hard-bodied ticks (Acari: Ixodidae). Whenever this tick-borne zoonosis is mentioned in medical clinics and emergency rooms, it sparks a firestorm of controversy. Denial often sets in, and healthcare practitioners dismiss the fact that this pathogenic spirochetosis is present in their area. For distribution of Bbsl across Canada, we conducted a 4-year, tick⁻host study (2013⁻2016), and collected ticks from avian and mammalian hosts from Atlantic Canada to the West Coast. Overall

Mitochondrial COI and 16S rDNA barcoding improve species delimitation of ixodid ticks in Peninsular Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: Hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) are major vectors of zoonotic pathogens affecting humans and animals. Accurate species identification is essential for surveillance and disease risk assessment but is often hindered by morphological similarity and intraspecific variation. In Malaysia, tick studies have largely relied on morphology or single-gene barcoding, with limited taxonomic and geographic coverage. METHODS: This study applied a multilocus mitochondrial approach using cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) and 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) to evaluate species boundaries among ixodid ticks from Pe

Efficacy of larvicidal activity of green synthesized titanium dioxide nanoparticles using Mangifera indica extract against blood-feeding parasites.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are considered to be among the best photocatalytic materials due to their long-term thermodynamic stability, strong oxidizing power, and relative non-toxicity. Nano-preparations with TiO2 NPs are currently under investigation as novel treatments for acne vulgaris, recurrent condyloma acuminata, atopic dermatitis, hyperpigmented skin lesions, and other non-dermatologic diseases. The present study was to investigate the acaricidal and larvicidal activity of synthesized TiO2 NPs utilizing leaf aqueous extract of Mangifera indica L. (Anacardiaceae) against

Reproductive activity of Synosternus cleopatrae (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) in relation to host factors.

Reproductive activity of Synosternus cleopatrae (Rothschild) infesting Gerbillus andersoni allenbyi Thomas was studied in a natural setting in Israel. Rodents were trapped and measured (weight and length), their sex was identified, and their reproductive status estimated. Their ectoparasites were removed, and fleas were dissected and their oocytes measured. Two indices of flea reproductive activity were analyzed: "reproductive status," which distinguished between gravid and nongravid females, and "reproductive intensity," which was estimated as the sum over the two largest oocytes of the produ

Multidisciplinary analysis of Knemidocoptes jamaicensis parasitising the Common Chaffinch, Fringilla coelebs: proofs for a multispecies complex?

The number of studies discussing the pathology and host specificity in Knemidocoptinae is very limited. In Knemidocoptes jamaicensis, the host specificity seems to be very broad, and there is a clear morphological variability in individuals originating from various bird species; hence, serious doubts appear about the species status of this mite. We report a multidisciplinary approach to the taxonomy, morphology, ecology, and pathology of K. jamaicensis. The source of the mites in our study was a second year aged female of the Common Chaffinch, Fringilla coelebs, which accidentally died in the

Between Mosses and Microbes: Stable Isotopes (15N/14N, 13C/12C) Clarify the Trophic Niches of Oribatid Mites on a High-Arctic Permafrost Archipelago (Svalbard, Norway).

Tundra biomes are strongly affected by globally changing temperatures. Rising temperatures will increase soil biota activity and result in higher CO2 release from tundra soils and 'greening' of this biome, which in turn will affect carbon cycling and soil food webs. It is therefore important to better understand those high-latitude soil food webs in tundra biomes. Here, we investigated adult and juvenile soil living oribatid mites (Acari) in eight different microhabitats (i.e., patches of vegetation from Bistorta vivipara, Carex sp./Luzula sp., Cassiope tetragona, Dryas octopetala, Salix spp.

Effects of temperature on the development and reproduction of Macrocheles nataliae.

Macrocheles nataliae (Acari: Macrochelidae) holds promise as a biological control of soil-inhabiting pests. Temperature is a critical abiotic factor influencing the population dynamics and biocontrol efficacy of predatory mites. However, its effects on the development and reproduction of M. nataliae remain poorly understood. In this study, the effects of five constant temperatures (17, 21, 25, 29, and 33 °C) on the growth, survivorship and reproduction of M. nataliae fed on Carpoglyphus lactis was examined using the age-stage, two-sex life table theory and linear degree-day model. The Complete Mitogenome of Haemaphysalis parva (Arachnida: Ixodidae) and Comparative Mitogenomics of Haemaphysalis Species.

IntroductionTicks are globally recognised as the second most important vectors of infectious diseases, posing significant threats to human and animal health. Haemaphysalis parva (Acari: Ixodidae) is frequently reported infesting humans and domestic animals and has been experimentally demonstrated to transmit Babesia ovis, with field associations to ovine babesiosis during the colder months. It has also been reported to harbour several zoonotic pathogens, including Coxiella burnetii, Francisella tularensis, and various Rickettsia species. Here, we aim to report the complete mitochondrial genome

Impact of land use practices on faunal abundance, nutrient dynamics and biochemical properties of desert pedoecosystem.

Increased dependence of resource-poor rural communities on soils of low inherent fertility are the major problem of desert agroecosystem. Agrisilviculture practices may help to conserve the soil biota for maintaining essential soil properties and processes in harsh climate. Therefore, the impacts of different land use systems on faunal density, nutrient dynamics and biochemical properties of soil were studied in agrisilviculture system of Indian desert. The selected fields had trees (Zizyphus mauritiana, Prosopis cineraria, Acacia nilotica) and crops (Cuminum cyminum, Brassica nigra, Triticum

Modeling future climate suitability for the western blacklegged tick, Ixodes pacificus, in California with an emphasis on land access and ownership.

In the western United States, Ixodes pacificus Cooley & Kohls (Acari: Ixodidae) is the primary vector of the agents causing Lyme disease and granulocytic anaplasmosis in humans. The geographic distribution of the tick is associated with climatic variables that include temperature, precipitation, and humidity, and biotic factors such as the spatial distribution of its primary vertebrate hosts. Here, we explore (1) how climate change may alter the geographic distribution of I. pacificus in California, USA, during the 21st century, and (2) the spatial overlap among predicted changes in tick habit

Diseases of mites.

An overview is given of studies on diseases of mites. Knowledge of diseases of mites is still fragmentary but in recent years more attention has been paid to acaropathogens, often because of the economic importance of many mite species. Most research on mite pathogens concerns studies on fungal pathogens of eriophyoids and spider mites especially. These fungi often play an important role in the regulation of natural mite populations and are sometimes able to decimate populations of phytophagous mites. Studies are being conducted to develop some of these fungi as commercial acaricides. Virus di

Expression of bovine genes associated with local and systemic immune response to infestation with the Lone Star tick, Amblyomma americanum.

The Lone Star tick, Amblyomma americanum Linnaeus 1758 (Acari; Ixodidae), causes considerable production losses to the southern U.S. cattle industry due to reduced weight, infertility, secondary infections at bite wound sites, damaged hides, and potentially death, as these ticks tend to infest livestock in large numbers. Increasing environmental concerns, along with the potential for chemical residue in food products, have led to more emphasis on alternative tick control strategies, such as selective breeding practices and anti-tick vaccines. To enable progress toward these goals, a better und

Contrasting species diversification of Eutarsopolipus (Acariformes: Podapolipidae) on Castelnaudia and Notonomus (Coleoptera: Carabidae).

Eutarsopolipus (Acari: Podapolipidae) is a large genus of mites parasitic in the subelytral space of carabid beetles. Herein, I explore the species radiations of Eutarsopolipus on the pterostichine genera Castelnaudia and Notonomus found in the rainforests of eastern Australia. Castelnaudia has an extraordinary radiation of podapolipid mite species, with most beetle species carrying multiple species of mites unique to each host. In contrast, each Notonomus species had just one species of Eutarsopolipus (with the exception of a single male mite of another species), and in four of the five host

Tick saliva induces regulatory dendritic cells: MAP-kinases and Toll-like receptor-2 expression as potential targets.

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) are bloodsucking ectoparasitic arthropods of human and veterinary medical importance. Tick saliva has been shown to contain a wide range of bioactive molecules with vasodilatory, antihemostatic, and immunomodulatory activities. We have previously demonstrated that saliva from Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks inhibits the maturation of dendritic cells (DCs) stimulated with LPS. Here we examined the mechanism of this immune subversion, evaluating the effect of tick saliva on Toll-like receptor (TLR)-4 signalling pathway in bone marrow-derived DCs. We demonstrated that R. sa
