Expanding range of Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae) and Borrelia burgdorferi infection in North Carolina counties, 2018-2023.

North Carolina (NC) has been experiencing a recent surge in human Lyme disease (LD) cases. Understanding the distribution of tick-borne diseases necessitates understanding the distribution of the ticks that transmit their causative pathogens. Unfortunately, in NC, knowledge on tick distribution is outdated. In this manuscript, we report the results of a state-wide entomologic survey conducted in 42 NC counties by flagging/dragging from spring 2018 to summer 2023. Ixodes scapularis nymphs and adults were screened for Borrelia burgdorferi (the causative agent of LD) and four other tick-borne bac

Warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia with anti-Jka specificity following babesiosis masquerading as a delayed hemolytic transfusion reaction.

BACKGROUND: Warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (WAIHA) is characterized by the development of autoantibodies that react with red blood cells (RBCs) optimally at physiologic temperature, classically resulting in a positive direct antiglobulin test (DAT) for IgG and a panreactive eluate. Babesiosis has been described as a potentiator of WAIHA, and all cases have shown classic blood bank findings. Only rare reports have described autoantibodies, both secondary to babesiosis and overall, with specificity for Kidd antigens. METHODS: Antibody detection and identification were performed using IgG-spec

Multi-scale analysis of habitat fragmentation on small-mammal abundance and tick-borne pathogen infection prevalence in Essex County, MA.

Habitat fragmentation and heterogeneity transform otherwise contiguous tracks of forest into smaller patches in the northeastern U.S. and likely impact abundances, movement patterns, and disease transmission pathways for small-mammal communities at multiple scales. We sought to determine the structure of a small-mammal community in terms of mammal abundance and infection prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.), Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Babesia microti within a fragmented landscape in Essex County, Massachusetts, USA. We studied communities at multiple spatial scales, incl

Effects of Neighborhood-Scale Acaricidal Treatments on Infection Prevalence of Blacklegged Ticks (Ixodes scapularis) with Three Zoonotic Pathogens.

Acaricides are hypothesized to reduce human risk of exposure to tick-borne pathogens by decreasing the abundance and/or infection prevalence of the ticks that serve as vectors for the pathogens. Acaricides targeted at reservoir hosts such as small mammals are expected to reduce infection prevalence in ticks by preventing their acquisition of zoonotic pathogens. By reducing tick abundance, reservoir-targeted or broadcast acaricides could reduce tick infection prevalence by interrupting transmission cycles between ticks and their hosts. Using an acaricide targeted at small-mammal hosts (TCS bait

Seasonal activity and tick-borne pathogen infection rates of Ixodes ricinus ticks in Hungary.

Ixodes ricinus is the most important tick species in Europe as it is most widely distributed and transmits the majority of tick-borne zoonotic pathogens. As limited data are available for Hungary, the aim of the present study was to investigate the seasonal timing of questing by I. ricinus and the infection rate of this tick species with all major tick-borne zoonotic pathogens. Monthly collections of I. ricinus were carried out over 3 consecutive years by dragging a blanket in 6 biotopes representing different areas of Hungary. Altogether, 1800 nymphs (300 per collection point) were screened a

Molecular detection and characterisation of protozoan and rickettsial pathogens in ticks from cattle in the pastoral area of Karamoja, Uganda.

Ticks and tick-borne diseases (TBDs) significantly affect cattle production and the livelihoods of communities in pastoralist areas. Data on protozoan and rickettsial pathogens in ticks infesting cattle in Uganda is scanty; while it is an indicator of the likelihood of disease transmission and occurrence. A cross-sectional study was conducted amongst cattle in the Karamoja Region, northeastern Uganda, from July through September 2017, to determine the tick species diversity, identify protozoan and rickettsial pathogens in the ticks, and characterise pathogenic species by sequence and phylogene

Gray areas: an investigation of ectoparasite abundance and distribution and tick-borne pathogens in peridomestic eastern gray squirrels Rodentia: Sciuridae (Sciurus carolinensis).

The eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis Gmelin) is a widely distributed rodent in North America, including introduced populations in western regions. Despite being widespread in urban and suburban ecosystems, their role as reservoirs for tick-borne pathogens has been understudied compared to other wildlife hosts. This study investigates the prevalence of ectoparasites and tick-borne pathogens in eastern gray squirrels across suburban habitats in Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States. Over 2 yr, squirrels were trapped across 5 sites and examined for ectoparasites. Ticks were the mo

Infectious etiologies among post-donation deferrals in a military blood donation center.

BACKGROUND: The burden of transfusion-transmitted infections among blood recipients remains low due to extensive pre- and post-donation screening. However, the military has the unique challenge of providing blood in austere environments with limited testing capabilities. This study evaluates the infectious etiologies of deferred blood donors at a large military blood donation center. METHODS: All blood donors at the Armed Service Blood Bank Center, San Antonio, between 2017 and 2022 with positive post-donation screening for hepatitis C (HCV), hepatitis B (HBV), human immunodeficiency virus (H

Patterns and Ecological Mechanisms of Tick-Borne Disease Exposure Risk in Acadia National Park, Mount Desert Island, Maine, United States.

National parks are unique and significant vector-borne pathogen transmission settings, engaging over 300 million people in outdoor recreation per year. In this study, we integrated vector surveys and ecological habitat feature data in spatial models to characterize tick-borne disease exposure risk in Acadia National Park (ANP), Maine. To determine the broad-scale patterns of blacklegged tick Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae) densities in ANP, we conducted host-seeking tick collections at 114 sites across the park over two years. Using these tick survey data and geospatial landscape featu

Reported County-Level Distribution of Seven Human Pathogens Detected in Host-Seeking Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus (Acari: Ixodidae) in the Contiguous United States.

Tickborne disease cases account for over 75% of reported vector-borne disease cases in the United States each year. In addition to transmitting the agents of Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu strict [Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae] and Borrelia mayonii [Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae]), the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, and the western blacklegged tick, Ixodes pacificus collectively transmit five additional human pathogens. By mapping the distributions of tickborne pathogens in host-seeking ticks, we can understand where humans are at risk of contracting tickborne diseases and

Phytochemical Screening and Antiprotozoal Effects of the Methanolic Berberis vulgaris and Acetonic Rhus coriaria Extracts.

Berberis vulgaris (B. vulgaris) and Rhus coriaria (R. coriaria) have been documented to have various pharmacologic activities. The current study assessed the in vitro as well as in vivo inhibitory efficacy of a methanolic extract of B. vulgaris (MEBV) and an acetone extract of R. coriaria (AERC) on six species of piroplasm parasites. The drug-exposure viability assay was tested on three different cell lines, namely mouse embryonic fibroblast (NIH/3T3), Madin-Darby bovine kidney (MDBK) and human foreskin fibroblast (HFF) cells. Qualitative phytochemical estimation revealed that both extracts co

Detection of human bacterial pathogens in ticks collected from Louisiana black bears (Ursus americanus luteolus).

There are 4 major human-biting tick species in the northeastern United States, which include: Amblyomma americanum, Amblyomma maculatum, Dermacentor variabilis, and Ixodes scapularis. The black bear is a large mammal that has been shown to be parasitized by all the aforementioned ticks. We investigated the bacterial infections in ticks collected from Louisiana black bears (Ursus americanus subspecies luteolus). Eighty-six ticks were collected from 17 black bears in Louisiana from June 2010 to March 2011. All 4 common human-biting tick species were represented. Each tick was subjected to polyme

Tourist attractions of southern Poland – risk of tick infestation and exposure to tick-borne diseases.

The southern region of Poland, rich in natural and tourist attractions, encourages outdoor recreation and spending time in nature. Ongoing climate change, including global warming, has contributed to an increased abundance of ticks and an extended period of their seasonal activity. Consequently, the number of tick-borne disease cases continues to rise, and their diagnosis and treatment are often challenging and prolonged. The aim of this study is to summarize current knowledge on the occurrence of ticks in tourist areas of southern Poland and to raise public health awareness among individuals

Geographic trends in acarological risk reporting for Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae)-borne infections across the eastern United States based on data submissions to the ArboNET Tick Module, 2004 to 2023.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention introduced the National Tick Surveillance Program in 2018 to better define areas of acarologic risk in response to the increasing burden of blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis, Acari: Ixodidae)-associated infections. The program coordinates surveillance efforts conducted by state and local public health programs and collates acarological data in the ArboNET Tick Module national database. Among the metrics collected, the density of infected host-seeking nymphs (DIN) is believed to be most closely correlated with the reported occurrenc

Comparison of acarological risk metrics derived from active and passive surveillance and their concordance with tick-borne disease incidence.

Tick-borne diseases continue to threaten human health across the United States. Both active and passive tick surveillance can complement human case surveillance, providing spatio-temporal information on when and where humans are at risk for encounters with ticks and tick-borne pathogens. However, little work has been done to assess the concordance of the acarological risk metrics from each surveillance method. We used data on Ixodes scapularis and its associated human pathogens from Connecticut (2019-2021) collected through active collections (drag sampling) or passive submissions from the pub

Harvested white-tailed deer as sentinel hosts for early establishing Ixodes scapularis populations and risk from vector-borne zoonoses in southeastern Canada.

Due to recent establishment of the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say, in southeastern Canada, tick-borne zoonoses (Lyme disease, human granulocytotropic anaplasmosis, and babesiosis) are of growing concern for public health. Using white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) culled in southwestern Quebec during 2007-2008, we investigated whether hunter-killed deer could act as sentinels for early establishing tick populations and for tick-borne pathogens. Accounting for environmental characteristics of culling sites, and age and sex of deer, we investigated whether their tick infestation l
