The Greater Amanzule Wetland (GAW) in southwestern Ghana is an ecologically important coastal ecosystem that supports biodiversity, fisheries, and local livelihoods but is increasingly threatened by anthropogenic activities. This study assessed heavy metal contamination in water and seafood species from the GAW and evaluated potential ecological and human health risks. A total of 126 water samples were collected from communities during three sampling periods in 2024 and analysed for cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), and mercury (Hg). Thirty-six seafood (36) sampl

BACKGROUND: Anterograde amnesia is a hallmark effect of volatile anesthetics. Isoflurane is known to affect both the translation and transcription of plasticity-associated genes required for normal memory formation in many brain regions. What is not known is whether isoflurane anesthesia prevents the initiation of transcription or whether it halts transcription already in progress. We tested the hypothesis that general anesthesia with isoflurane prevents learning-induced initiation of transcription of several memory-associated immediate-early genes (IEGs) correlated with amnesia; we also asses

Myxosporidian parasites infecting fish are very dangerous parasites causing severe damage to a large number of economically important fishes especially in aquaculture. A survey of myxosporean parasites infecting four species of fishes from the River Nile in Egypt is conducted. One hundred and ninety-five out of 316 fish specimens with a percentage of 61.7% were found to be naturally infected with these parasites. Light microscopic examination of different tissues revealed the presence of 12 myxosporean species belonging to the family Myxobolidae. Four of the identified species are novel and th

In recent times, carbamazepine (CBZ) as an anticonvulsants drug has raised attention because of its safety concern in the aquatic environment. The present study aimed to evaluate the sub-lethal effects of CBZ (1%, 0.1 % and 0.01 % of 96 h LC50) on P. hypophthalmus for 60 days based on haematological, biochemical, and genotoxicity biomarkers. Chronic exposure of CBZ altered blood profiles (total erythrocyte count, packed cell volume, haemoglobin) and serum biomarkers such as alkaline phosphates, cholesterol, lactate dehydrogenase and transaminase enzymes. Oxidative stress biomarkers such as sup

Immunocytochemical application of antibodies against nNOS to the brain sections of Clarias batrachus revealed intense immunoreactivity in several olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs), in their axons over the olfactory nerve, and terminals in the olfactory glomeruli. Several basal cells in the olfactory epithelium showed NOS immunoreactivity. Application of post-embedding immunoelectron microscopy showed nNOS labeled gold particles in apical cilia, dendrites and soma of the ORNs and also in the axon terminals in the glomeruli of the olfactory bulb. nNOS containing fibers were also encountered in t

Rhythmic oscillations of up to 600 Hz in grouped neurons frequently occur in the brains of animals. These high-frequency oscillations can be sustained in calcium-free conditions and may be blocked by gap junction blockers, implying a key role for electrical synapses in oscillation generation. Mathematical theories have been developed to demonstrate oscillations mediated by electrical synapses without chemical modulation; however, these models have not been verified in animals. Here we report that oscillations of up to 686 Hz are induced by paired spikes of short spike intervals (SIs) in a junc

To investigate the mechanisms of oxidative injury of neurons and glia, we studied the photodynamic effect on isolated stretch receptor that consists of only two sensory neurons enwrapped by satellite glial cells. Photodynamic therapy (PDT), a potent inducer of oxidative stress, is a prospective method for destruction of brain tumors. PDT induced functional inactivation and necrosis of neurons, necrosis, apoptosis, and proliferation of glial cells. The roles of calmodulin, calmodulin-dependent kinase II, phospholipase C, protein kinases A and C, and phosphodiesterase in these processes were stu

The present investigation was carried out by sampling water, sediment and fish during a fish-kill episode at Panipat (Haryana, India), and again sampling at the same site was conducted after a gap of two months. During the second sampling no fish-kill was observed and the water was relatively less turbid and clear. Antioxidant profile and lipid peroxidation (LPO) in fish tissues were studied. Analysis was also carried out on the physico-chemical characteristics of water samples along with heavy metal and pesticide analysis in water and sediment samples during and after the episode. The genus Clinostomoides Dollfus, 1950 was erected to accommodate a single worm from Ardea goliath sampled in the Belgian Congo. The specimen was distinguished from other clinostomids by its large size and posterior genitalia. In the following years, metacercariae of Clinostomoides brieni, have been described in Clarias spp. in southern and western Africa. A few authors have referred to Clinostomum brieni, but all such usages appear to be lapsus calami, and the validity of Clinostomoides remains widely accepted. In this study our aim was: position C. brieni among the growing clinostomids molec

The present paper describes the taxonomy of two new monogeneans, namely, Thaparocleidus longiphallus sp. n. and T. siloniansis sp. n., based on morphological, morphometric and molecular biological analysis, collected from the fish Wallago attu (Bloch & Schn.) and Silonia silondia (Ham.), respectively, at Meerut, UP, India. Genetic characterization of the two new species is based on sequence analyses of the rDNA 28S gene using neighbour-joining and maximum-parsimony techniques. These methods are congruent in depicting T. longiphallus sp. n. and T. siloniansis sp. n. as closely related species,

Members of the genus Flavobacterium occur in a variety of ecological niches and represent an interesting diversity of lifestyles. Flavobacterium branchiophilum is the main causative agent of bacterial gill disease, a severe condition affecting various cultured freshwater fish species worldwide, in particular salmonids in Canada and Japan. We report here the complete genome sequence of strain FL-15 isolated from a diseased sheatfish (Silurus glanis) in Hungary. The analysis of the F. branchiophilum genome revealed putative mechanisms of pathogenicity strikingly different from those of the other

BACKGROUND: Snakehead vesiculovirus (SHVV) has led to huge economic losses in snakehead aquaculture, and its pathogenic mechanisms is still not fully understood. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), as an important class of non-coding RNAs, play a key regulatory role in the process of viral infection.
METHODS: We examined the effect of SHVV infection on the expression of miR-130c-5p and the effect of overexpression of miR-130c-5p on the proliferation of SHVV. Cotransfection of viral N protein and miR-130c-5p, and the effect of miR-130c-5p on the expression of N protein was detected. Meanwhile, the effect of o

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are an alternative to antibiotics for treatment and prevention of infections with a lower risk of bacterial resistance. Pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) is an outstanding AMP with versatile effects including antimicrobial activity and modulation of immune responses. The objective of this research was to study PACAP immunomodulatory effect on rainbow trout cell lines infected with Aeromonas salmonicida. PACAP from Clarias gariepinus (PACAP1) and a modified PACAP (PACAP5) were tested. RT-qPCR results showed that il1b and il8 expression in R

Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, a ciliated parasite causing ichthyophthiriasis (white spot disease) in freshwater fishes, results in significant economic loss to the aquaculture sector. One of the important predisposing factors for ichthyophthiriasis is low water temperature (i.e., below 20°C), which affects the health and makes freshwater fishes more susceptible to parasitic infections. During ichthyophthiriasis, fishes are stressed and acute immune reactions are compromised, which enables the aquatic bacterial pathogens to simultaneously infect the host and increase the severity of disease. Microalgae have well-established health benefits for farmed fish. Thus, this study aims to explore the potential protective effects of Spirulina platensis, Chlorella vulgaris, and Moringa oleifera against pyrogallol-induced hematological, hepatic, and renal biomarkers in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus), as well as the histopathological changes in the liver and kidney. Fish weighing 200 ± 25 g were divided into several groups: group 1 served as the control, group 2 was exposed to 10 mg/L of pyrogallol, and groups 3, 4, and 5 were exposed to the same concentration of pyrogallol, supplemente

17α-Methyltestosterone (17MT), a synthetic organic compound commonly found in sewage waters, can affect reproduction in aquatic animals, such as tilapia and yellow catfish. In the present study, male Gobiocypris rarus were exposed to 25, 50, and 100 ng/L of 17α-methyltestosterone (17MT) for 7 days. We first analyzed miRNA- and RNA-seq results to determine miRNA-target gene pairs and then developed miRNA-mRNA interactive networks after 17MT administration. Total weights, total lengths, and body lengths were not significantly different between the test groups and control groups. The paraffin sli

Unlike mammals and birds, many fishes have young sex chromosomes, providing excellent models to study sex chromosome differentiation at early stages. Previous studies showed that spotted scat possesses an XX-XY sex determination system. The X has a complete Dmrt3 copy (termed normal) and a truncated copy of Dmrt1 (called Dmrt1b), while the Y has the opposite (normal Dmrt1, which is male-specific, and a truncated Dmrt3 called Dmrt3△-Y). Dmrt1 is the candidate sex determination gene, while the differentiation of other sex-linked genes remains unknown. The spotted scat has proven to be a good mod
