Greenhouse gases (GHGs) monitoring is essential for mitigating emissions from anthropogenic activities, yet the deployment of high-precision analyzers remains constrained by cost and operational complexity. Low-cost GHGs sensors often suffer from signal drift, cross-sensitivity, and unstable responses under extreme temperature and humidity conditions. To address these challenges, GHGsNet was developed as a low-cost, process-aware deep learning framework for predicting CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions during composting, a representative high temperature and high humidity anthropogenic activity. GHGs

Soil iron (Fe) oxides play an important role as sorbent and catalyst for nutrient and metal cycling and transformations, but few stream and floodplain restorations have evaluated their role for nutrient and metal removal. Here, we assessed the unrestored versus restored changes in soil Fe oxides and the key soil properties that influenced these changes, for 11 floodplain restoration sites representing a post-restoration period of 0-22 years. Relationships between Fe oxides, nutrients, metals, and denitrification rates were also investigated to quantify their potential role as geochemical filte

The presence of metronidazole (MNZ) in medical wastewater poses a potential threat to environmental safety and people's health. Herein, we report an innovative strategy to fabricate a recyclable bayberry tannin (BT)-functionalized melamine foam (MF)-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (MFBT-Fe0) catalyst for efficient MNZ degradation in medical wastewater. The through-pore structure of MF reduced mass transfer resistance in heterogeneous systems, while the amphiphilic BT stabilized nZVI via steric hindrance and chelating interactions and created a high-concentration MNZ microenvironment throu

Modern agricultural practices lead to complex pesticide cocktails in paddy ecosystems, yet their extensive ecological associations with microbial communities and soil biogeochemical cycles remain largely uncharacterized under real-world conditions. Continental-scale investigation across 48 Chinese paddy regions revealed pervasive pesticide contamination, detecting 50 prevalent pesticide residues with widespread co-occurrence patterns (≥ 9 compounds at 90 % sites). Triazole fungicides correlated with suppression of nitrification, denitrification, and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium

Rare earth mining activities cause severe nitrogen pollution in watersheds, yet the residual hazardous rare earth elements (REEs) toxicity in tailings wastewater challenges biological nitrogen removal technology. This work demonstrated that introducing low-dose Fe(II) into partial denitrification/anammox (PD/A) system significantly alleviated REEs-induced stress on anammox consortia via detoxification and physical barrier reinforcement. The PD/A bioreactor with 15 mg/L Fe(II) (R1) was compared against a control without Fe(II) for real rare earth tailings wastewater treatment. Metagenomic analy

There is a need to investigate processes that enable sludge re-use while enhancing sewage treatment efficiency. Mechanically disintegrated thickened surplus activated sludge (SAS) and fermented primary sludge were compared for their capacity to produce a carbon source suitable for BNR by completing nutrient removal predictive tests. Mechanically disintegration of SAS using a deflaker enhanced volatile fatty acids (VFAs) content from 92 to 374 mg l(-1) (4.1-fold increase). In comparison, primary sludge fermentation increased the VFAs content from 3.5 g l(-1) to a final concentration of 8.7 g l(

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent and bioaccumulative compounds that pose long-term risks to ecosystems and human health. While PFAS were long considered biologically inert under anaerobic conditions, emerging evidence shows that selected PFAS can undergo microbial biotransformation and, in some cases, biodefluorination in biogeochemically active environments. However, the current understanding remains constrained, as PFAS biotransformation has been interpreted through molecular structure, individual microbial strains, or isolated enzymes, while the concurrent nitrogen,

Microalgae-based bioremediation of wastewater enables simultaneous nutrient removal and production of value-added biomass. This study systematically evaluated three geographically distinct Chlorella sp. strains for semi-continuous treatment of food wastewater, addressing critical challenges that hinder practical application. All strains demonstrated substantial nutrient removal (NO3--N > 73%, TP > 78%), with film-forming Chlorella sp. CQ uniquely sustaining complete nitrate elimination. This strain simultaneously produced biomass in which essential amino acids accounted for 40% of total amino

Artificial light pollution represents an important anthropogenic disturbance in subterranean heritage environments, yet its associations with epilithic microbial communities and biodeterioration processes remain poorly understood. In tourist-accessible subterranean caves, artificial light creates persistent illuminated areas on stone surfaces that may alter microbial community assembly and biogeochemical functions associated with biofilm development. Here, the Longyou Grottoes, a large underground sandstone cave complex in Zhejiang, China, were investigated using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and m

Increasingly severe soil salinization in alkaline wetland due to elevated water evaporation under climate warming affected biogeochemical cycling processes, further threatening ecosystem imbalance and global greenhouse gas (GHG) budget. To reveal the underlying relationship between microbial dynamics, nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) characteristics under salinity stress in alkaline wetland, a 40-day microcosm experiment was conducted using soil collected from Zhalong wetland in northern China. The physiochemical properties, bacterial community, N2O and CO2 emissions were observed

Water eutrophication has emerged as a pervasive ecological challenge worldwide. To realize the resource utilization of waste and nutrients, a novel rape straw-derived biochar-calcium alginate composite (M-CA-RBC) immobilized Pseudomonas sp. H6 was synthesized to simultaneously remove phosphate (PO43-) and ammonium (NH4+) from distillery wastewater. The removal performance of PO43- and NH4+ by M-CA-RBC were investigated. The removal mechanisms were explored by using different adsorption models combined with microbial degradation kinetics, analysis of dissolved organic matter components, electro

Rhomboids are intramembrane serine proteases highly conserved in the three domains of life. Their key roles in eukaryotes are well understood but their contribution to bacterial physiology is still poorly characterized. Here we demonstrate that Brucella abortus, the etiological agent of the zoonosis called brucellosis, encodes an active rhomboid protease capable of cleaving model heterologous substrates like Drosophila melanogaster Gurken and Providencia stuartii TatA. To address the impact of rhomboid deletion on B. abortus physiology, the proteomes of mutant and parental strains were compare

Fresh leachate is commonly featured with high concentrations of degradable organic matters, which can impede the performance of traditional biological treatment, especially the anaerobic reactor. Aiming at improving the biological treatment process of fresh leachate, this study creatively proposed a microaerobic-IC-AO2 (MAICAO2) process and compared it with traditional biological process, then optimized the operating conditions. Meanwhile, this work investigated the transformation rules and molecular compositions of dissolved organic matters (DOM) during MAICAO2 process, particularly the hazar

Elucidating the interactions between algae and associated microbial communities is critical for understanding the mechanisms that mediate the dynamic of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in marine environment. However, the microbial functional profiles and their biogeochemical potential in HABs process remains elusive, especially during a complete natural HAB cycle. Here, we used pyrosequencing and functional gene array (GeoChip) to investigate microbial community dynamics and metabolic potential during a natural dinoflagellate (Noctiluca scintillans) bloom. The results shown that bacterioplankton e

Endosymbioses between animals and chemoautotrophic bacteria are ubiquitous at hydrothermal vents. These environments are distinguished by high physico-chemical variability, yet we know little about how these symbioses respond to environmental fluctuations. We therefore examined how the γ-proteobacterial symbionts of the vent snail Ifremeria nautilei respond to changes in sulfur geochemistry. Via shipboard high-pressure incubations, we subjected snails to 105 μM hydrogen sulfide (LS), 350 μM hydrogen sulfide (HS), 300 μM thiosulfate (TS) and seawater without any added inorganic electron donor (

Metal-nitroxyl (M-HNO/M-NO(-)) coordination units are found in denitrification enzymes of the global nitrogen cycle, and free HNO exhibits pharmacological properties related to cardiovascular physiology that are distinct from nitric oxide (NO). To elucidate the properties that control the binding and release of coordinated nitroxyl or its anion at these biological metal sites, we synthesized {CoNO}(8) (1, 2) and {CoNO}(9) (3, 4) complexes that contain diimine-dipyrrolide supporting ligands. Experimental (NMR, IR, MS, EPR, XAS, XRD) and computational data (DFT) support an oxidation state assign

Mitigation of nitrous oxide (N2 O) emission from swine wastewater treatment was demonstrated in an aerobic bioreactor packed with carbon fibers (CF reactor). The CF reactor had a demonstrated advantage in mitigating N2 O emission and avoiding NOx (NO3 + NO2 ) accumulation. The N2 O emission factor was 0.0003 g N2 O-N/gTN-load in the CF bioreactor compared to 0.03 gN2 O-N/gTN-load in an activated sludge reactor (AS reactor). N2 O and CH4 emissions from the CF reactor were 42 g-CO2 eq/m(3) /day, while those from the AS reactor were 725 g-CO2 eq/m(3) /day. The dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN)

The urgent need for effective food waste management, coupled with the scarcity of carbon sources for sewage treatment, highlights the potential of producing carbon sources from food waste as a mutually beneficial solution. This study investigated the production of carbon sources through anaerobic fermentation using the liquid phase of food waste three-phase separation. Compared with previous studies using raw food waste or mixed substrates, the liquid phase derived from three-phase separation is richer in soluble organic matter and has been pre-heated (80 °C), which facilitates subsequent ferm

Carbon dioxide (CO2) injection into oil reservoirs is a well-established and promising strategy for enhancing oil recovery while simultaneously sequestering carbon, whose effectiveness is increasingly recognized to be influenced by microbial-mediated mechanisms and biogeochemical processes. However, the impact of CO2-injected and storage on functional microbial communities and their metabolic potential remains poorly understood. The study employed high-throughput sequencing to analyze the composition and diversity of microbial communities in produced water from three production wells with a lo
