Heat hematoma-like epidural collection mimicking traumatic hematoma in a reheated bathtub death.

Prolonged immersion in a reheated bathtub can cause extensive thermal alteration and produce intracranial findings that mimic traumatic lesions on postmortem computed tomography (PMCT). Here, we report a bath-related fatality in a woman in her late 60s in which PMCT demonstrated a crescent-shaped epidural collection along the right parietal convexity. The collection exhibited layered components, consisting of a fat-attenuation upper layer and a dependent low-attenuation layer with a small amount of gas. PMCT also demonstrated diffuse bilateral ground-glass opacities, bilateral pleural effusion

Three-dimensional prediction of the human eyeball and canthi for craniofacial reconstruction using cone-beam computed tomography.

An anatomical relationship between the hard and soft tissues of the face is mandatory for facial reconstruction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the positions of the eyeball and canthi three-dimensionally from the relationships between the facial hard and soft tissues using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). CBCT scan data of 100 living subjects were used to obtain the measurements of facial hard and soft tissues. Stepwise multiple regression analyses were carried out using the hard tissue measurements in the orbit, nasal bone, nasal cavity and maxillary canine to predict the m

Facial tissue depths in children with cleft lip and palate.

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is a craniofacial malformation affecting more than seven million people worldwide that results in defects of the hard palate, teeth, maxilla, nasal spine and floor, and maxillodental asymmetry. CLP facial soft-tissue depth (FSTD) values have never been published. The purpose of this research is to report CLP FSTD values and compare them to previously published FSTD values for normal children. Thirty-eight FSTDs were measured on cone beam computed tomography images of CLP children (n = 86; 7-17 years). MANOVA and ANOVA tests determined whether cleft type, age, sex, an

Dental fluorescence: potential forensic use.

In cases of identification of bones, skeletal segments or isolated bones, searching for biotypologic diagnostic data to estimate an individual's age enables comparing these data with those of missing individuals. Enamel, dentin and pulp undergo remarkable changes during an individual's life. The enamel becomes more mineralized, smoother and thinner, and deteriorates because of physiological and pathological factors. Dental pulp decreases in volume due to the deposition of secondary dentin; thus, the dentin becomes thicker with time. In natural teeth, the fluorescence phenomenon occurs in denti

Forensic odontology, part 4. Human bite marks.

The aim of this paper is to give a brief overview of bite mark analysis: its usefulness and limitations. The study and analysis of such injuries is challenging and complex. The correct protocols for collection, management, preservation, analysis and interpretation of this evidence should be employed if useful information is to be obtained for the courts. It is now possible, with advances in digital technology, to produce more accurate and reproducible comparison techniques which go some way to preventing and reducing problems such as photographic distortions. Research needs to be continued to

Medical-legal pitfalls for the breast surgeon: incomplete mammographic localization of suspicious lesions and the correlation between palpable and mammographic abnormalities.

In approximately 5 per cent of mammographically detected lesions, the mammographic abnormality is present in only one view, either craniocaudal or mediolateral. In such a scenario, the physician has been left with the option of closely following the lesion, hoping it will eventually become apparent in two views, or guessing the approximate location of the lesion for subsequent open biopsy. However, with today's advances in technology, CT scan and its production of a three-dimensional image can compensate for mammography's two-dimensional limitation. With diminished need for identification on t

Modic changes as seen on MRI are associated with nonspecific chronic lower back pain and disability.

BACKGROUND: Estimating the contribution of endplate oedema known as Modic changes to lower back pain (LBP) has been the subject of multiple observational studies and reviews, some of which conclude that the evidence for an association of Modic change with LBP is uncertain while others demonstrate a clear link. The clinical trials demonstrating the benefit of basivertebral nerve ablation, a therapeutic intervention, in a tightly defined homogenous patient group with chronic LBP and Modic changes type 1 or type 2, provides further evidence for the contribution of Modic changes to LBP and shows t

Evaluation of unenhanced post-mortem computed tomography to detect chest injuries in violent death.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the performances of unenhanced post-mortem computed tomography (CT) to detect thoracic injuries in violent death. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospectively, we conducted a review of unenhanced CT scans of 67 victims of violent deaths with thoracic injuries and compared CT findings with the results of clinical autopsy. Our gold standard was a comparison of CT scans with autopsy discussed in a monthly forensic radiology multidisciplinary team meeting (MDTM). The data were collected by organ system: heart, pericardium, aorta, lungs, pleura, bone, and dia

Postmortem Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging of an Abdominal Gunshot Wound.

The use of postmortem computed tomography (CT) has been described in many articles concerning gunshot injuries. Postmortem magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for better assessment of soft tissue injuries has also been mentioned in the literature, albeit much less often. The use of postmortem MRI for abdominal gunshot wounds has not been previously presented in the literature. The present case report describes the findings of an abdominal gunshot wound detected by postmortem CT and MRI, followed by an autopsy. The main imaging findings on CT were a hyperdense ring at the entrance wound, which ind

Application of atomic force microscopy in the analysis of time since deposition (TSD) of red blood cells in bloodstains: A forensic analysis.

Bloodstains can provide important information about a criminal act. These biological traces, when analyzed at murder sites, for example, can determine the dynamics of a criminal offense, the identity of a suspect, and the time at which a crime was committed. Determine the time since deposition (TSD) of these blood traces may be the first clue for the police investigators to estimate the time-lapse of a murder. During a criminal attack, the blood spilled from an injury begins the process of degradation and aging from the moment it leaves the human body and comes into contact with the physical e

Skeletal dimensions as predictors for the shape of the nose in a South African sample: A cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) study.

The profile of the nose is an important feature for facial approximations. Although several manual and semi-automated prediction guidelines exist for estimating the shape of the nose, the reliability and applicability of these methods to South Africans groups are unknown. The aim of this study was to predict the displacements of capulometric landmarks from hard-tissue planes to facilitate nasal soft-tissue reconstruction in a South African sample. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 120 adult South Africans were selected from the Oral and Dental Hospital, University of Pretoria, Sout

A medieval murder.

On rare occasion, the body or skeleton of a murder victim may be discovered hundreds of years, or even millennia, after the crime. The murder of the 5000-year-old Stone Age man, found frozen in the ice of the Italian Alps, being the most recent example. In most of these cases too much time has passed to allow the application of modern forensic technology. We describe here a homicide that occurred between 1310 and 1390. The victim died of a crossbow injury, with a bolt passing between the 2nd and 3rd vertebrae, completely transecting the brainstem. The crossbow was, for more than 2 and one half

Evaluating differential nuclear DNA yield rates and osteocyte numbers among human bone tissue types: A synchrotron radiation micro-CT approach.

Molecular human identification has conventionally focused on DNA sampling from dense, weight-bearing cortical bone tissue, typically from femora or tibiae. A comparison of skeletal elements from three contemporary individuals demonstrated that elements with high quantities of cancellous bone yielded nuclear DNA at the highest rates, suggesting that preferentially sampling cortical bone may be suboptimal (Mundorff & Davoren, 2014). Despite these findings, the reason for the differential DNA yields between cortical and cancellous bone tissues remains unknown. The primary goal of this work is to

Post-mortem diagnosis of septic arthritis by Pasteurella multocida: a case report and literature review of fatal septic arthritis.

The diagnosis of septic arthritis remains challenging in the clinical setting, often leading to a suspicion for medical liability. Our purpose is to describe an unusual case of a post-mortem diagnosis of P. multocida fatal septic arthritis, in a healthy 67-year-old woman presenting with pain in the right shoulder. Moreover, a literature review of cases of fatal septic arthritis is provided. The multidisciplinary approach consisted of a forensic autopsy and additional post-mortem analyses (microbiology, biochemical analyses, histopathology, and revision of radiological images) carried out durin

Analysis of anthropometric measurements taken from the periocular region in healthy young individuals with different somatotypes.

PURPOSE: Anthropometric parameters related with the periocular region (PR) have gained great importance with the optical technology used in the treatment of eye defects. They have also become important parameters that determine the limits of treatment in aesthetic surgery procedures in PR and the treatment of orbital diseases. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of PR measurements with somatotype. METHODS: Somatotypes were determined by using the Heath-Carter method. Ten indirect anthropometric measurements, namely nasal root (mf-mf), outer chantal distance (ex-ex), inner ch
