Effect of temperature on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus in ready-to-eat cooked rice with pork floss.

Cooked rice with pork floss (CRPF) wrapped in dried seaweed is one of the most popular ready-to-eat (RTE) foods in many Asian countries, particularly in Taiwan. The products are susceptible to Staphylococcus aureus contamination and temperature abuse during manufacturing, distribution, and storage. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of temperature on its growth in RTE CRPF for use in risk assessment and prevention of staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP). Inoculated CRPF samples were stored at 4, 12, 18, 25, and 35°C, and the change in the populations of S. aureus during stora

Biomaterials for the decorporation of (85)Sr in the rat.

Although four stable isotopes of strontium occur naturally, Sr is produced by nuclear fission and is present in surface soil around the world as a result of fallout from atmospheric nuclear weapons tests. It can easily transfer to humans in the event of a nuclear/radiological emergency or through the plant-animal-human food chain causing long-term exposures. Strontium is chemically and biologically similar to calcium, and is incorporated primarily into bone following internal deposition. Alginic acid (alginate) obtained from seaweed (kelp) extract selectively binds ingested strontium in the ga

A sulfated polysaccharide from Laminaria japonica alleviated colitis via remodeling gut microbiota and promoting butyrate-mediated barrier repair.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by dysregulated immunity, gut barrier dysfunction, and microbial dysbiosis. Polysaccharides from Laminaria japonica have shown anti-inflammatory properties and microbial-modulating potential, but their precise protective mechanisms, particularly through an integrated "microbiota-metabolite-barrier-inflammation" axis, remain unclear. In this study, a sulfated polysaccharide (ALP) was extracted from L. japonica and its protective effects were evaluated in a DSS-induced colitis mice model. ALP administration significant

Anti-dengue potential and mosquitocidal effect of marine green algae-stabilized Mn-doped superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Mn-SPIONs): an eco-friendly approach.

Vector-borne diseases pose a significant public health challenge in economically disadvantaged nations. Malaria, dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, and lymphatic filariasis are spread by mosquitoes. Consequently, the most effective method of preventing these diseases is to eliminate the mosquito population. Historically, the majority of control programs have depended on chemical pesticides, including organochlorines, organophosphates, carbamates, and pyrethroids. Synthetic insecticides used to eradicate pests have the potential to contaminate groundwater, sur

Anti-trichomonad activities of different compounds from foods, marine products, and medicinal plants: a review.

Human trichomoniasis, caused by the pathogenic parasitic protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis, is the most common non-viral sexually transmitted disease that contributes to reproductive morbidity in affected women and possibly to prostate cancer in men. Tritrichomonas foetus strains cause the disease trichomoniasis in farm animals (cattle, bulls, pigs) and diarrhea in domestic animals (cats and dogs). Because some T. vaginalis strains have become resistant to the widely used drug metronidazole, there is a need to develop alternative treatments, based on safe natural products that have the potential

Marine phlorotannins block SARS-CoV-2 entry via ACE2 and attenuate pulmonary inflammation in K18-hACE2 transgenic mice.

SARS-CoV-2 has transitioned from pandemic to endemic circulation, yet it continues to cause severe respiratory disease, particularly in vulnerable populations. Effective antivirals with well-defined mechanisms of action remain a critical unmet need. Marine phlorotannins are structurally complex polyphenols from edible brown seaweeds with established antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties, making them promising candidates for therapeutic development. Our previous work demonstrated that selected phlorotannins suppress SARS-CoV-2 replication through inhibition of the viral proteases 3C-like p
