Formant frequency estimation of high-pitched vowels using weighted linear prediction.

All-pole modeling is a widely used formant estimation method, but its performance is known to deteriorate for high-pitched voices. In order to address this problem, several all-pole modeling methods robust to fundamental frequency have been proposed. This study compares five such previously known methods and introduces a technique, Weighted Linear Prediction with Attenuated Main Excitation (WLP-AME). WLP-AME utilizes temporally weighted linear prediction (LP) in which the square of the prediction error is multiplied by a given parametric weighting function. The weighting downgrades the contrib

Should spikes be treated with equal weightings in the generation of spectro-temporal receptive fields?

Knowledge on the trigger features of central auditory neurons is important in the understanding of speech processing. Spectro-temporal receptive fields (STRFs) obtained using random stimuli and spike-triggered averaging allow visualization of trigger features which often appear blurry in the time-versus-frequency plot. For a clearer visualization we have previously developed a dejittering algorithm to sharpen trigger features in the STRF of FM-sensitive cells. Here we extended this algorithm to segregate spikes, based on their dejitter values, into two groups: normal and outlying, and to const

Comparison of auditory steady-state responses and auditory brainstem responses in audiometric assessment of adults with sensorineural hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: Many of the medico-legal patients who claimed compensation may exaggerate hearing loss that varies in degree, nature, and laterality. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether Auditory Steady-State Response (ASSR) could be used to predict the hearing level of adults, and whether ASSR could become a better testing method than Auditory brainstem response (ABR) in audiometric assessment of adults with sensorineural hearing loss. METHODS: This was a prospective study, which was conducted in a tertiary referral hospital. From January to June 2007, 142 subjects (284 ears) with

Hearing loss from interrupted, intermittent, and time varying non-Gaussian noise exposure: The applicability of the equal energy hypothesis.

Sixteen groups of chinchillas (N=140) were exposed to various equivalent energy noise paradigms at 100 dB(A) or 103 dB(A) SPL. Eleven groups received an interrupted, intermittent, and time varying (IITV) non-Gaussian exposure quantified by the kurtosis statistic. The IITV exposures, which lasted for 8 hday, 5 daysweek for 3 weeks, were designed to model some of the essential features of an industrial workweek. Five equivalent energy reference groups were exposed to either a Gaussian or non-Gaussian 5 days, 24 hday continuous noise. Evoked potentials were used to estimate hearing thresholds and

Pathological Voice Detection Based on Phase Reconstitution and Convolutional Neural Network.

The nonlinear dynamic features can effectively describe the acoustic characteristics of normal and pathological voice. In this paper, the phase space reconstruction and convolution neural network are used to classify the normal and pathological voice. The phase space information of normal and pathological voice is reconstructed using delay time and embedding dimension, the one-dimensional signal is converted to a two-dimensional matrix, and the reconstructed trajectory graph sample of the signal is generated. The trajectory graph samples are used as the input of the VGG-like convolutional neur

Do the Nonlinear Dynamic Acoustic Measurements, Nonlinear Energy Difference Ratio and Spectrum Convergence Ratio, Correlate with Perceptual Evaluation of Esophageal Voice Speakers?

BACKGROUND: The acoustic assessment of phonation after total laryngectomy is challenged by signal aperiodicity which makes frequency-based acoustic measures less reliable. This is important for patients who use esophageal voice since voice samples mostly include type III (highly aperiodic) and 4 (chaotic) signals. As such, using non-linear measures, which are better suited for aperiodic phonation, may be useful to investigate the relationship between acoustic signal characteristics and perception of esophageal voice quality. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate whether nonlinear dynami

The effect of sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus on speech recognition over air and bone conduction military communications headsets.

Military personnel are at risk for hearing loss due to noise exposure during deployment (USACHPPM, 2008). Despite mandated use of hearing protection, hearing loss and tinnitus are prevalent due to reluctance to use hearing protection. Bone conduction headsets can offer good speech intelligibility for normal hearing (NH) listeners while allowing the ears to remain open in quiet environments and the use of hearing protection when needed. Those who suffer from tinnitus, the experience of perceiving a sound not produced by an external source, often show degraded speech recognition; however, it is

Human vocal tract resonances and the corresponding mode shapes investigated by three-dimensional finite-element modelling based on CT measurement.

Resonance frequencies of the vocal tract have traditionally been modelled using one-dimensional models. These cannot accurately represent the events in the frequency region of the formant cluster around 2.5-4.5 kHz, however. Here, the vocal tract resonance frequencies and their mode shapes are studied using a three-dimensional finite element model obtained from computed tomography measurements of a subject phonating on vowel [a:]. Instead of the traditional five, up to eight resonance frequencies of the vocal tract were found below the prominent antiresonance around 4.7 kHz. The three extra re

The potential of onset enhancement for increased speech intelligibility in auditory prostheses.

Recent studies have shown that transient parts of a speech signal contribute most to speech intelligibility in normal-hearing listeners. In this study, the influence of enhancing the onsets of the envelope of the speech signal on speech intelligibility in noisy conditions using an eight channel cochlear implant vocoder simulation was investigated. The enhanced envelope (EE) strategy emphasizes the onsets of the speech envelope by deriving an additional peak signal at the onsets in each frequency band. A sentence recognition task in stationary speech shaped noise showed a significant speech rec
