The effects of muscimol inactivation of small regions of motor and somatosensory cortex on independent finger movements and force control in the precision grip.

This study investigated the effects of inactivating small regions of the primary somatosensory (SI) and motor (MI) cortex on the control of finger forces in a precision grip. A monkey was trained to grasp and lift a computer-controlled object between the thumb and index finger and to hold it stationary within a narrow position window for 2 s. The grip force applied perpendicular to the object surface, the lifting or load force applied tangentially in the vertical direction, and the vertical displacement were sampled at 100 Hz. Also, the ability of the monkey to extract small pieces of food fro

Evidence that periodontal pressoreceptors provide positive feedback to jaw closing muscles during mastication.

1. Mastication was produced by stimulation of the right motor-sensory cortex of urethan-anesthetized rabbits with 15-s trains of shocks (1-ms duration) at 50 Hz. Movements of the lower jaw and jaw muscle electromyograms (EMGs) were recorded on magnetic tape for later computer analysis. 2. The stimulus site was chosen, and stimulus intensity adjusted, so that stereotyped movements were produced that included a wide swing of the mandible to the left side during jaw closure. 3. Control trials were alternated with trials in which a steel ball (2 mm diam) was thrust between the anterior molar teeth

Sudden death in the year following myocardial infarction. Relation to ventricular premature contractions in the late hospitals phase and left ventricular ejection fraction.

Both depressed left ventricular ejection fraction and ventricular arrhythmias have been associated with a poor prognosis following acute myocardial infarction. To assess the relative role of each of these parameters in predicting mortality in the early period after hospitalization for myocardial infarction, 24 hour ambulatory electrocardiographic tape recordings and gated cardiac blood pool scans were obtained in 81 patients approximately two weeks after their admission to the hospital for myocardial infarction. Lown class 0 to II ventricular premature contractions during this period were clas

Women's perspectives on gestational diabetes mellitus screening services during antenatal care in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the most common medical condition occurring during pregnancy. Screening for GDM during antenatal care (ANC) provides an opportunity to prevent its progress and complications. Women's experiences should help shape how GDM screening guidelines are implemented, which will further influence uptake and adherence to screening services. We aimed to explore women's experiences of receiving ANC at two hospitals in Tanzania where we introduced GDM screening services. METHODS: We employed an exploratory case study design in two district hospitals of Tan

Fixation of distal clavicle fractures with coracoclavicular instability: a comparative biomechanical study in human cadavers.

BACKGROUND: The need for coracoclavicular (CC) stabilization in the fixation of fractures with CC instability (Neer type IIB and V) was biomechanically demonstrated by higher construct strength than isolated locking plate osteosynthesis. It was the purpose of this study to prove noninferiority of the new cow-hitch suture repair technique compared with the well-established suture tape double-button fixation with regard to overall fixation strength and cyclic loading properties. METHODS: Twelve human cadaver shoulders (7 right and 5 left) were matched for sex and age (mean age: 75 ± 5 years). A

Experiences and perceptions of youth living with HIV in Western Uganda on school attendance: barriers and facilitators.

BACKGROUND: The globally recognized socio-economic benefits of education have stirred many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa like Uganda to promote universal access to schooling by removing fiscal barricades for those in primary and secondary schools. However, the proportion of Youth Living With HIV/AIDS (YLWHA) missing school, studying with difficulties and dropping out of school in Uganda has been observed to be higher than that of other youth. This study aimed at understanding the barriers and facilitators for YLWHA in Uganda to attend school. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative inquiry with

Preventive Effect of Dynamic Stabilization Against Adjacent Segment Degeneration After Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of dynamic stabilization with sublaminar taping (ST) on the upper segment adjacent to posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Hybrid procedures such as dynamic stabilization for adjacent segment in addition to spinal fusion have been developed for reduction of the mechanical stress and prevention of adjacent segment pathology (ASP). However, a few reports are available on hybrid procedures and their efficacy is still controversial. METHODS: Of the 116 patients who underwent L4/5 PLI

Self-regulatory speech during planning and problem-solving in children with SLI and their typically developing peers.

BACKGROUND: Past research with children with specific language impairment (SLI) has shown them to have poorer planning and problem-solving ability, and delayed self-regulatory speech (SRS) relative to their typically developing (TD) peers. However, the studies are few in number and are restricted in terms of the number and age range of participants, which limits our understanding of the nature and extent of any delays. Moreover, no study has examined the performance of a significant subset of children with SLI, those who have hyperactive and inattentive behaviours. AIMS: This cross-sectional

Prediction of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation using nonlinear analysis of the R-R interval dynamics before the spontaneous onset of atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: New methods based on nonlinear theory have been developed to give more insight into complex heart rate (HR) dynamics. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that altered HR dynamics, as analyzed with complexity and fractal measures, may precede the spontaneous onset of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). Secondly, the difference in the temporal change of these measurements between the different types of atrial fibrillation (AF) was assessed. METHODS AND RESULTS: From 105 Holter tapes in which PAF was recorded, 44 PAF (>or=5 min) episodes in 33 patients (22 men, 58 +/- 12

Neuromuscular control of anguilliform locomotion: patterns of red and white muscle activity during swimming in the american eel anguilla rostrata.

Two areas that have received substantial attention in investigations of muscle activity during fish swimming are (1) patterns of fiber type recruitment with swimming speed and (2) the timing of muscle activation in relation to muscle strain. Currently, very little is known about either of these areas in eels, which represent an extreme body form among fishes and utilize a mode of locomotion found at one end of the undulatory spectrum (anguilliform locomotion). To assess how this swimming mode and body form influence the neuromuscular control of swimming, I recorded electromyographic data from

U.S. and Swedish primary care physicians' views on promoting healthy lifestyles: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Primary care patients can benefit from counseling to address unhealthy lifestyle habits. Despite this, evaluations most often note that primary care facilities are not using the full potential of healthy lifestyle counseling methods. Studies comparing prevention efforts in different countries generally find substantial differences between countries. Quantitative studies carried out in a project targeting health professionals and patients in the U.S. and Sweden have demonstrated considerable differences between the two countries. In particular, U.S. health care professionals were fo

Comparison of Diaphragmatic Stretch Technique and Manual Diaphragm Release Technique on Diaphragmatic Excursion in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Randomized Crossover Trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) impairs the function of the diaphragm by placing it at a mechanical disadvantage, shortening its operating length and changing the mechanical linkage between its various parts. This makes the diaphragm's contraction less effective in raising and expanding the lower rib cage, thereby increasing the work of breathing and reducing the functional capacity. AIM OF THE STUDY: To compare the effects of diaphragmatic stretch and manual diaphragm release technique on diaphragmatic excursion in patients with COPD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This ran
