Uncontrolled peripheral urbanisation coupled with environmental degradation has affected the status of schistosomiasis in Pernambuco (PE), Brazil. This endemic disease continues to perpetuate its transmission in rural areas and has also become a cause for concern in coastal towns of the state. The lack of basic infrastructure (sanitation and health programmes) to support the new urban areas leads to faecal contamination of natural aquatic environments, resulting in consequent infection of vector snails and the emergence of new sources of schistosomiasis transmission. In the present paper, we d

We have previously shown that it is the lung stage schistosomulum which is both the inducer and the target of immunity in rats vaccinated with irradiated cercariae but that rats can also be partially protected by immunization with detergent extracts of mechanically-transformed schistosomula. In the present study we therefore compared the immunogenicity of these and intermediate schistosomular stages. In the first experiment low levels of protection (13-24%) were induced by extracts of mechanically-transformed schistosomula cultured for 3 hours or 2 days but not by extracts of lung schistosomul

Schistosomes are parasitic worms that have a complex life cycle. The larval stage cercaria, infectious to mammals, is described as highly susceptible to the complement system, largely due to the glycocalyx that covers the cercarial membrane. In an attempt to have a more complete understanding of cercaria reaction to the complement system, three different approaches were used. Live cercariae exposed to normal human serum (NHS) as source of complement factors were assessed for (i) membrane attack complex (MAC) deposition on the parasite surface, (ii) cercaria survival rate by Hoechst staining of

The endemicity (prevalence, intensity and incidence) of schistosomiasis mansoni and its patterns of transmission (focality, seasonality) were studied in five villages in the Managil irrigation scheme, Sudan. Marked differences between villages were observed in overall prevalence (33.3%-54.8%), intensity (77.3-135.0 eggs/g faeces), incidence (15.2%-57.9%) and age-related patterns of Schistosoma mansoni infections. Overall, prevalence and intensity of infection peaked in those aged 10-14 years and then declined slowly with increasing age. However, there were second, smaller peaks in both prevale

The incidences of Schistosoma mansoni infection and reinfection were investigated in an endemic area of Brazil (Peri-Peri, State of Minas Gerais) where chemotherapy and snail control had been used for 13 years (1974-87). Two cohorts were followed: the first consisted of 584 individuals with no evidence of infection at entry (infection cohort), and the second comprised 296 individuals who were treated and did not eliminate eggs 8-12 months afterwards (reinfection cohort). The incidence of infection (per 100 person-years) decreased from 7.5 in 1974-77 to 3.6 in 1986-87, and that of reinfection f

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is endemic to Malawi, where preventive chemotherapy by mass drug administration (MDA) has been the foundational public health strategy for over a decade. Despite ongoing control, our understanding of the contemporary epidemiology of schistosomiasis in rural Malawi is limited to infrequent school-based surveys, typically lacking evidence from community-based surveys particularly within non-lakeshore upland communities who may be perceived to be at lower risk.
METHODS: Between July and August 2022, we conducted a cross-sectional parasitological survey amongst a commu

Resource availability can alter infection outcomes through its impact on host immunity and on parasite reproduction. On one hand, enhanced nutrition could favor immunity, limiting the parasite, and on the other hand, it could favor establishment and reproduction of the parasite. Our study aimed to determine the effect of diet on (1) host susceptibility to infection and (2) parasite production in a snail-trematode system. We fed Biomphalaria sudanica, a snail vector of Schistosoma mansoni, either a strict lettuce (low nutrient) or pellet (high nutrient) diet for two generations before exposing

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis and hookworm infection remain public health problems in large parts of sub-Saharan Africa. The epidemiology of schistosomiasis and hookworm was studied in seasonal transmission settings in the northern part of Côte d'Ivoire.
METHODOLOGY: In August 2018, a cross-sectional study was conducted. Urine and stool samples were collected from 742 individuals aged 6-96 years in 16 localities from four departments in northern Côte d'Ivoire. Urine samples were examined by a filtration method for quantification of Schistosoma haematobium eggs. Stool samples were subjected to d

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease that disproportionately affects the poorest people in tropical and subtropical countries. It is a major parasitic disease causing considerable morbidity in Ethiopia. Despite significant control efforts, schistosomiasis transmission is still widespread in many rural areas of the country. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and intensity of intestinal schistosomiasis among schoolchildren, as well as to identify schistosomiasis transmission sites in Gomma District, southwestern Ethiopia. Between October 2018 and September 2019, cro

In recent decades, computer vision has proven remarkably effective in addressing diverse issues in public health, from determining the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of diseases in humans to predicting infectious disease outbreaks. Here, we investigate whether convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can also demonstrate effectiveness in classifying the environmental stages of parasites of public health importance and their invertebrate hosts. We used schistosomiasis as a reference model. Schistosomiasis is a debilitating parasitic disease transmitted to humans via snail intermediate hosts. T

There is a need for recent information on intermediate snail hosts of schistosomes in The Gambia; the previous studies were conducted over three decades ago. This study assessed the incidence, species diversity, distribution and infection status of schistosome intermediate snail hosts in the country. Malacological surveys were conducted in all 5 regions of The Gambia: Central River Region (CRR), Upper River Region (URR), Western Region (WR), Lower River Region (LRR) and North Bank Region (NBR). Sampling of snails was undertaken at 114 sites that included permanent water bodies such as streams

BACKGROUND: The development of novel antischistosomal drugs is crucial, as currently no vaccine and only a single drug is available for the treatment of schistosomiasis. Fast and accurate in vitro assays are urgently needed to identify new drug candidates and research efforts should include Schistosoma haematobium. The aim of the present study was to develop a S. haematobium drug sensitivity assay based on newly transformed schistosomula (NTS).
METHODS: We first undertook comparative studies on the cercarial emergence rhythms of the intermediate host snails Biomphalaria glabrata (S. mansoni)

Thymol, Linalool and Eugenol showed considerable molluscicidal effect against Biomphalaria alexandrina, Bulinus truncatus and Lymnneae natalensis. The thymol was the potent one at least LC50 and LC90) followed by euganol then linalool. L. natalensis were more sensitive to these compounds followed by B. truncatus and then B. alexandrina. The LC50 & LC90) of thymol were 22 and 34 ppm against B. alexaldrina, 20 and 30 ppm for B. truncatuts and 18 and 29 ppm for L. nalalensis. These values were higher with Eugenol, 28 and 48 ppm for B. alexuadrina, 24 and 44 ppm for B. truncatus and 22 and 40 ppm

Given that the two communities lie only 10 km apart, on the northern shore of Lake Kariba, it is surprising that human schistosomiasis now appears to be a much less important health problem in Kariba town (Zimbabwe) than in Siavonga town (Zambia). In an attempt to explain this difference, the level and sites of Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni transmission in Kariba, and the prevalences and intensities of human infection with these parasites in both communities, have now been investigated. In a longitudinal study, a cohort of 378 schoolchildren, 150 subsistence fishermen and 42 commercia

A survey was undertaken in Tigray, Northern Ethiopia, to assess the prevalence of malaria, schistosomiasis, and intestinal helminths in relation to microdams. The survey took place from March to June 1995, during the dry season, at 41 microdams. At each site the village nearest the dam (within thirty minutes walk) was selected, ten households were randomly chosen, and all family members were examined for malaria and intestinal parasites. The overall study sample was 2271 people, of all age groups. Plasmodium falciparum infection was documented in four villages (at 10% of microdams); prevalence

Despite extensive control efforts, schistosomiasis continues to be a major public health problem in developing nations in the tropics and sub-tropics. The miracidium, along with the cercaria, both of which are water-borne and free-living, are the only two stages in the life-cycle of Schistosoma mansoni which are involved in host invasion. Miracidia penetrate intermediate host snails and develop into sporocysts, which lead to cercariae that can infect humans. Infection of the snail host by the miracidium represents an ideal point at which to interrupt the parasite's life-cycle. This research fo

An experimental study in hamsters was performed to evaluate the capability for detecting Schistosoma mansoni DNA in serum and fecal samples during the pre and post-egg-laying periods of infection using TaqMan® Real-Time PCR system (qPCR), was compared with the circumoval precipitin test (COPT) and the Kato-Katz technique, especially among individuals with low parasitic burden. Twenty-four hamsters were infected with cercariae. Three hamsters were sacrificed per week under anesthesia, from 7 days post infection (DPI) up to 56 DPI. A serum sample and a pool of feces were collected from each hams

Very little is known about insulin signalling in schistosomes despite its potential importance in host-parasite molecular dialogue and parasite growth and development. The recent characterization of two insulin receptors (SmIR-1 and SmIR-2) in Schistosoma mansoni has led us to reconsider the question of the potential importance of insulin in host-schistosome interactions. In this work, we demonstrated that insulin could regulate glucose uptake in schistosomes and we investigated the implication of SmIR-1 and SmIR-2 in this process. The possibility that specific inhibitors of SmIR-1 and SmIR-2

A highly evolved relationship exists between the parasitic flatworm Schistosoma mansoni and its vertebrate hosts that include the use of host immune signals by parasites. The S. mansoni infection was studied in two strains of mice genetically selected, over 18 generations of assortative mating, for extreme phenotypes of susceptibility (TS) and resistance (TR) to immunological tolerance. The objective was to observe whether the different host genetic backgrounds affected the outcome of experimental schistosomiasis. Fecal egg excretion, tissue egg count, worm recovery, and adult worm morphology
