An unexpected guest: Pulmonary echinococcosis diagnosed by intraoperative frozen section examination. A case report and literature review.

Echinococcosis is caused by tapeworms belonging to the Echinococcus genus. The most common site of infection is the liver although it may involve almost any organ. Symptoms of pulmonary echinococcosis vary depending on the location and structure of the cyst. While uncomplicated cysts usually appear at imaging as well-defined homogeneous lesions with fluid content and smooth walls of variable thickness, complicated lesions may have a more heterogeneous content with higher density making more difficult the distinction from malignancies or other infections. Hereby we describe the case of a 61-yea

Congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation - diagnostic and therapeutic procedure: 8-year experience of one medical centre.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM) is a rare anomaly. The mechanisms and the time at which the abnormality develops are still unclear. The malformation is characterized by the presence of single large or multiple but smaller cysts. AIM: To present the experience of our medical centre, the Polish Mother's Memorial Hospital - Research Institute. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analysed the medical records of 32 neonates hospitalized in 2008-2017 at the Department of Paediatric Surgery and Urology ICZMP due to pre- or postnatally diagnosed congenital cystic adenomatoid mal

Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) combined with a three-way stopcock for mediastinal cysts through negative pressure drainage: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) can extract cystic fluid for diagnosis, but evidence is mainly limited to case reports with infection risk. Against this background, we will report the clinical case that explores the improvement strategy of EBUS-TBNA combined with a three-way stopcock device to reduce infection rates and review the relevant literature, using the search term '(((endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration) OR (EBUS-TBNA)) AND ((cysts) OR (mediastinal cysts) OR (bronchogenic cysts)))' from PubMed. A clinical guideline for structured assessment of CT-imaging in congenital lung abnormalities.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a clinical guideline for structured assessment and uniform reporting of congenital lung abnormalities (CLA) on Computed Tomography (CT)-scans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted for articles describing CT-scan abnormalities of congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM), bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS), congenital lobar emphysema (CLE) and bronchogenic cyst (BC). A structured report using objective features of CLA was developed after consensus between a pediatric pulmonologist, radiologist and surgeon. RESULTS: Of 1581 articles

Cysts and cystlike lesions of the lung.

This article has reviewed the major pulmonary cystic lesions occurring in infants and children. The chest radiograph will initially reveal either single or multiple well-circumscribed radiopaque or radiolucent areas. In younger patients, radiopaque lesions are best evaluated with sonography, which can define the internal architecture of the mass, its location, and vascular supply. On the other hand, radiolucent lesions, lesions inaccessible to the sonographic beam, and lesions requiring analysis of the pulmonary parenchyma are best assessed with CT. MR is helpful in the preoperative evaluation

Magnetic resonance imaging of cardiac tumors: part 2, malignant tumors and tumor-like conditions.

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) is the reference noninvasive imaging technique for assessment and characterization of a suspected cardiac or juxta-cardiac mass. The multiplanar assessment of anatomy, tissue composition, and functional impact afforded by CMRI allows for early differentiation between a nonneoplastic mass and a tumor mass, be it benign or malignant. Malignant cardiac tumors have a poor prognosis; however, early detection and characterization confer some survival advantage, enabling early instigation of chemotherapy and/or consideration of a surgical debulking pro

[Cardiac tumors. Experience with two cases].

Cardiac tumors are rare neoplasms with an incidence of 0.027 cases per 100. Up to 90 % of these tumors are benign but, because of their location, they can be lethal, despite their histology. Most appear in infants aged less than 1 year. Teratomas, which are relatively frequent in the pediatric age group, are usually located in the ovaries, sacrococcygeal area, thorax, and retroperitoneal area. Intrapericardial location is less frequent. In this localization, the clinical manifestation depends on compression of adjacent structures and determines the therapeutic attitude in each case. Diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for masses in the posterior mediastinum.

Between January 1980 and December 1997 twenty-one patients with a mass in the posterior mediastinum came under our observation. All of the patients underwent chest radiography, bronchoscopy, respiratory function tests, perfusional and ventilatory radionuclide scans, a computed tomography (CT) of the chest and blood gas analysis. In cases involving neurogenic tumours magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used. Ten patients underwent CT guided transthoracic needle biopsy. The excision was performed by means of a thoracotomy in 12 cases (57.1%) and by video assisted thoracoscopy surgery (VATS) in

Thoracotomies in children.

Thoracotomies in children have been less extensively studied, as the incidence of diseases necessitating thoracotomies is low in the pediatric age group. This study reviews childhood thoracic diseases, thoracotomy approaches, indications, and complications. Surgical procedures and complications of a total of 196 children below 16 years of age who underwent thoracotomy for various reasons at the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Ataturk Chest Diseases and Chest Surgery Training and Research Hospital, between January 2000 and December 2004, were reviewed in this study. Out of the 196 patients, 77

Bronchopulmonary foregut malformation.

Bronchopulmonary foregut malformation (BPFM) is a rare anomaly of accessory pulmonary tissue that usually arises from esophagus or stomach. We present a case of extralobar pulmonary sequestration (ELS) connecting with the esophagus by a cyst, the inner wall of which is lined with squamous epithelium or respiratory epithelium. BPFM is sometimes used to group a number of ventral anomalies of accessory pulmonary tissue. The term currently refers specifically to those lesions composed of sequestrations that retain communication with the gastrointestinal tract. Usually the communication is a well-f

Congenital Lung Anomalies in Adults.

Congenital lung anomaly (CLA) refers to a rare group of malformations that are typically identified prenatally or in early childhood. However, a significant proportion of cases evade detection until adulthood and either are incidentally discovered or manifest with symptoms of recurrent respiratory infection or pulmonary hemorrhage. While most CLAs have characteristic imaging findings at CT and MRI, they remain a diagnostic challenge due to the infrequency with which they are encountered in adults. Radiologists frequently play a pivotal role in suggesting the diagnosis and guiding appropriate m

Multifocal cholesterol granulomas of the anterior mediastinum.

BACKGROUND: Cholesterol granuloma in the mediastinum is rarely observed, accounting for 1% of all mediastinum tumors. There have been only a few reports of multifocal cholesterol granulomas of the thymus. We herein report a rare case of multifocal cholesterol granuloma in the thymus that was incidentally detected during follow-up of an aortic aneurysm. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 70-year-old man with dyslipidemia and hypertension who was referred to our hospital to undergo an operation for chest aortic aneurysm. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) showed 4 lesions in the anterior m

Developmental lung anomalies in adults: A pictorial review.

Developmental lung anomalies represent a heterogeneous group of diverse, yet related abnormalities that involve the lung parenchyma, pulmonary vasculature or a combination of both-which usually present prenatally and in early childhood. However, a substantial number of cases go unnoticed during childhood and present either incidentally or with recurrent respiratory infections progressing into adulthood. Defective development of the tracheobronchial tree and the pulmonary vasculature are proposed to cause these developmental anomalies. Encountering these lung anomalies in adults is a diagnostic

Epithelioid sarcoma presenting as pulmonary cysts with cancer antigen 125 expression.

A 39-year-old Japanese woman presented with a swollen right hand and a right-sided pneumothorax. Chest CT revealed bilateral multiple pulmonary thin-walled cysts measuring<or=1 cm in diameter and small nodules. An initial skin biopsy led to a misdiagnosis of metastatic adenocarcinoma, as tumour cells were positive for cytokeratin, epithelial membrane antigen, carcinoembryonic antigen and cancer antigen 125. However, chemotherapy proved ineffective, and the skin biopsy was repeated. A final diagnosis of epithelioid sarcoma (ES) was made. Open lung biopsy showed that the pulmonary nodules repres

Unusual radiological presentation of extralobar pulmonary sequestration: a preoperative diagnostic challenge.

BACKGROUND: Extralobar pulmonary sequestration is a rare disease and is frequently associated with congenital malformations. Herein, we report an adult case of an unusual extralobar sequestration accompanied by a bronchogenic cyst and the concurrent absence of the left pericardium. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old female patient presented with an abnormal shadow on a chest radiograph. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a partially enhanced cystic mass in the left anterior mediastinum. Another cystic lesion was detected on the left side of the trachea in the upper mediastinum. The a
