Semiconductor quantum dots (QD) have been widely used for fluorescent bioimaging. However their biosafety has attracted increasing attention, since the data about their in vivo behavior in biological systems are still limited. In this paper we have investigated the short- and long-term biodistribution of intact fluorescent CdSe/CdS/ZnS QD coated by 3-mercaptopropionic acid in mice. The results showed that intravenously injected QD accumulated mainly in the lungs, liver and spleen and were retained in these tissues for over 22 days. Heme oxygenases (HO-1 and HO-2) are responsible for the production of carbon monoxide, a vasodilator. HO is important in controlling placental blood flow and expression can be sensitive to oxygen. We previously reported a reduction in HO-2 expression in placentae obtained from patients with pre-eclampsia or living at high altitude, both associated with placental hypoxia. Thus we hypothesized that HO expression in cultured trophoblasts would be altered by exposure to hypoxia. Stem cells or undifferentiated cells can cope more easily with external stresses. Metallothionein (MT) demonstrates strong antioxidant properties, yet the physiological relevance of its antioxidant action is not clear. A MnO2 nanosheet (MnO2-NS) suspension was prepared from tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMA⋅OH), H2O2, and MnCl2⋅4H2O, and its efficiency for Cd(II) removal from aqueous solutions was investigated.
