BACKGROUND: Synovial osteochondromatosis is a benign metaplastic proliferative disorder of the synovium characterised by the formation of multiple cartilaginous nodules in the synovium, many of which detach and become loose bodies. The disease is characteristically monoarticular, most commonly involving the knee. A site in the elbow was first reported in 1918 by Henderson, but any joint may be involved. Very few cases of synovial osteochondromatosis of the elbow have been reported in the literature. The presenting symptoms are usually diffuse discomfort in the affected joint and decreased rang

Twenty-eight mature New Zealand white female rabbits were allocated into 4 groups of 7 rabbits. Group 1 received a coiled wire of cobalt chrome alloy (Vitallium) (16 gauge x 1 cm). Group 2 received an equal weight of cobalt chrome particles averaging 15.4 microns in diameter. Group 3 received a coiled wire implant of commercially pure (C.P.) titanium (16 gauge x 1 cm). Group 4 received the same weight of C.P. titanium particles averaging 3.8 microns. The implants were placed through a drill hole in the proximal right tibia; the left tibia served as a prepared but nonimplanted control. The anim

Understanding how feeding strategies influence oral morphology is fundamental to fish functional anatomy and trophic ecology. However, comparative data on tongue structure across dietary groups remain scarce in teleosts. This study examined tongue morphology in Boops boops (bogue), an omnivorous teleost with opportunistic feeding habits, and Pagrus pagrus (red porgy), a carnivorous benthic feeder with specialized prey preferences. By selecting species with distinct trophic niches, we aimed to elucidate how tongue architecture reflects dietary adaptations within teleosts. Morphometric analysis

BACKGROUND: Osteochondral lesions are a common clinical problem and their management has been historically challenging. Mesenchymal stem cells have the potential to differentiate into chondrocytes and thus restore hyaline cartilage to the defect, theoretically improving clincal outcomes in these patients. They can also be harvested with minimal donor site morbidity.
PURPOSE: To assess the clinical and functional outcomes of mesenchymal stem cell implantation to treat isolated osteochondral defects of the knee. A secondary purpose is to assess the quality of the current available evidence as w

Since synovial chondromatosis (SC) clinically mimics symptoms of internal derangements of the TMJ, the diagnostic value of MRI and CT, overlooked for years, is discussed in the presented case. Multiple amorphous calcifications in the left infratemporal fossa and upper synovial compartment of the TMJ were detected on the CT and MRI scans. The patient underwent open TMJ arthrotomy and removal of 15 calcified loose bodies. SC may be diagnosed radiographically when sclerosis of the glenoid fossa, soft tissue edema, and intraarticular radio-opaque loose bodies are detected. Advanced imaging of the

Several studies have shown that anterior disk displacement (ADD) of human temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can lead to cellular and extracellular alterations in the disk proper, bilaminar zone (BZ), condyle, articular eminence and synovial membrane. Due to lack of an animal model for this disease, it is not known whether the mechanical displacement of the disk could lead to the observed histopathological changes. The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the histopathological changes that occur in the rabbit craniomandibular joint (CMJ) following surgical induction of ADD. The right CMJ w

Tumour-to-tumour metastasis is very unusual and has been defined as a tumour metastasis into another histologically different tumour. It is extremely rare in bone. We report a case of lung squamous cell carcinoma metastasized to an enchondroma in the femur of a patient with Ollier disease. A 60-year-old female had a history of a poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. She underwent a video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy, and a follow-up MRI scan showed three lesions in the left distal femur and proximal tibia, which were initially interpreted as metastasis on radiology. PURPOSE: The goal of the fixation of painful osteochondritis dissecans of the femoral condyles in adults is to integrate the osteochondral fragment and thus achieve a normal hyaline cartilaginous coverage. The addition of a biological process to primary fixation may result in improved fragment integration (hybrid fixation). Osteochondral plugs may fulfil this role. The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term clinical and radiological results after hybrid fixation of unstable osteochondritis dissecans. The hypothesis was that the rate of secondary osteoarthritis would be low.
METHODS: Nine

INTRODUCTION: Despite advances in the development of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), the ultimate benefits of MSCs against current cell-based therapies are still limited. This study aimed to assess the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of Cytopeutics® umbilical cord-derived MSCs (Chondrocell-EX) in patients with knee cartilage injury.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted in two parts: a phase I feasibility study (PI) followed by a phase II randomized controlled trial (PII). Both studies were approved by UKM Research Ethics Committee (PI: UKM PPI/111/8; PII: UKM PPI/111/8/JEP-2019-304

BACKGROUND: Chondromesenchymal hamartoma of the chest wall is a rare, benign disease that usually presents at birth or in early infancy. It typically involves one or more ribs, forming a unilateral or bilateral extrapleural mass. Patients may be asymptomatic or complain of mild respiratory distress depending on tumor size and location. To the best of our knowledge, only two of the approximately 100 cases reported so far are adults.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present two cases of chondromesenchymal hamartoma. The first case involved the left fifth rib in a 24-year-old male, in close proximity to th

Primary synovial chondromatosis represents an uncommon benign neoplastic process with hyaline cartilage nodules in the subsynovial tissue of a joint, tendon sheath, or bursa. The nodules may enlarge and detach from the synovium. The knee, followed by the hip, in male adults are the most commonly involved sites and patient population. The pathologic appearance may simulate chondrosarcoma because of significant histologic atypia, and radiologic correlation to localize the process as synovially based is vital for correct diagnosis. Radiologic findings are frequently pathognomonic. Radiographs rev

The capsular and ligamentous structures as control system of a healthy knee-joint supported by the muscular system are responsible for the rolling and gliding motion of the femoral condyles on the tibial plateau. Both the condyles and the tibial plateau have individually developed but to each other adjusted shapes and fine structures thereby. These structures consist of hyaline cartilage at their three-dimensional surfaces and of closely packed fibrils (lamina splendens) as the final gliding zone for tensile load. The orientation of the collagenous fibres can be made visible by split lines. Th

BACKGROUND: Stifle osteoarthritis (OA) lesions are most common in the medial femorotibial (MFT) compartment. Their characterisation and mapping will inform equine veterinarians towards an accurate diagnosis of OA.
OBJECTIVES: Investigate and map micro-CT (μCT) changes in the hyaline articular cartilage (HAC) in the medial femoral condyle (MFC) and medial tibial plateau (MTP).
STUDY DESIGN: Ex vivo cadaveric.
METHODS: Stifles (n = 7 OA and 17 control [CO]) were retrieved from a tissue bank. The MFC and MFT were imaged with μCT. Regions of interest (ROIs) were cranial (MFCcr; MTPcr) and cauda

Among all joints affected, knee osteoarthritis has a prevalence of about 10% in men and 13% in women over 60 years old. Knee osteoarthritis has high economic and social costs and may have a devastating impact on patient quality of life. Treatment of symptomatic knee Osteoarthritis may involve oral or topical administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or intra-articular injection of corticosteroids. Recently, a novel injectable collagen formulation (ChondroGrid) consisting of bovine hydrolyzed <3 kDa type I collagen has been developed and is currently available on the market as an

CONTEXT: Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) aims to restore hyaline cartilage. Traditionally, ACI rehabilitation is prescribed in a concurrent (CON) format. However, it is well known from studies in asymptomatic populations that CON training produces an interference effect that can attenuate strength gains. Strength is integral to joint function, so adopting a nonconcurrent (N-CON) approach to ACI rehabilitation might improve outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To assess changes in function and neuromuscular performance during 48 wk of CON and N-CON physical rehabilitation after ACI to the knee.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease involving inflammation of the joints. While the etiology of RA remains unknown, evidence exists for a significant contribution of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). Environmental factors are also indicated as playing an etiological role. Since it is impossible to define the mechanisms contributing to disease onset and progression in humans, mouse models have been used widely. While many animal models have been generated by immunization with self-proteins to induce arthritis, type II collagen (CII)-induced arthritis is one of the most comm

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Swine housing and management systems strongly influence respiratory health through their effects on air quality, ventilation, and environmental exposure. However, quantitative, lobe-specific evidence describing how different management systems affect pulmonary microarchitecture remains limited. This study aimed to compare alveolar structure, fibrosis, collagen deposition, and alveolar macrophage distribution in swine raised under hygienic, beta-agonist-free rearing, and free-range systems.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen clinically healthy male crossbred (Large White × Land
