This case report describes the multidisciplinary management of a young male who presented with a Class I incisor relationship and bi-maxillary dento-alveolar protrusion on a Class I skeletal base. The occlusion was complicated by an ankylosed and moderately infra-positioned upper left permanent central incisor, an anterior crossbite, crowding, a reduced overbite and centreline discrepancy. The incisor was traumatised and avulsed when the root was immature and the tooth was reimplanted with delay. On referral for orthodontic treatment at age 11 .5 years, the upper left central incisor was exper

BACKGROUND: To test the null hypothesis that there is no difference in the apical root resorption seen after orthodontic treatment with the conventional brackets and the self-ligating brackets.
METHODS: Pre-treatment and post-treatment periapical radio-graphs of 70 patients, (35 treated with the Damon3 0.022" bracket and 35 with the 0.022" 3 M bracket) were studied. The long cone paralleling technique was used for all the radio-graphs. Any image distortion between the pre-treatment and post-treatment radio-graph was calculated and compensated for by using the crown length measurements, on the

OBJECTIVES: To investigate root resorption after 6 months of active orthodontic treatment and its relation to possible risk factors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-seven patients (10-18 years) with a Class I malocclusion and crowding treated with fixed appliance and premolar extractions were examined with cone beam computed tomography before and after 6 months of active treatment. The exposure covered all teeth from first molar to first molar in both jaws. The Malmgren index was used to evaluate the degree of root resorption. Irregular root contour (score 1) was seen in most teeth already befo

OBJECTIVES: Angle Class II malocclusions including a retrognathic mandible are the most frequent orthodontic problems. Both removable and fixed functional appliances can be used for mandibular advancement. Mandibular advancement after treatment with any fixed functional appliance has numerous therapeutic effects, such as stretching of masticatory muscles, ligaments, membranes and surrounding soft tissues, thus causing positional changes of the hyoid bone and epiglottis. This retrospective study investigates and compares treatment effects upon epiglottis- and hyoid bone position and posterior a

The young dental patient with maxillary lateral incisor agenesis, maxillary canine impaction, and cystic fibrosis presents considerable challenges to the dentist. An interdisciplinary approach is described here for the orthodontist and restorative dentist to plan and work together with the patient's and parents' cooperation and consent. Despite some compromises, a successful outcome was achieved, as demonstrated in this case report. The use of conservative yet esthetic and durable fixed replacement prostheses is highlighted. Congenitally absent maxillary lateral incisors, impacted maxillary ca

INTRODUCTION: Interproximal reduction (IPR) damages the caries protective superficial layer of the enamel, making the enamel surface prone to caries because of the increase in surface roughness. Remineralizing solutions can help in preventing these undesirable side effects. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the effect of nanohydroxyapatite (nHAp) and sodium fluoride (NaF) application on enamel remineralization after IPR and to evaluate changes in surface roughness, composition, and microhardness of the treated enamel.
METHODS: A total of 25 patients with Angle's Class I malocclusion, req

This case report describes the interdisciplinary treatment of an ectopic horizontally placed maxillary right central incisor with severe root dilaceration. The root was distally angulated and entrapped by the root of the maxillary right lateral incisor. The initial force system was aimed at an occlusal displacement and applied to the crown. During the second phase, a button was cemented onto the apex of the impacted tooth. A force from the apex to a temporary anchorage device in the palate moved the root toward the midline. Finally, a root canal and an apectomy were performed and the central i

This article reports the comprehensive, interdisciplinary treatment of a 50-year-old periodontally compromised adult patient with multiple missing posterior teeth. After initial periodontal treatment, the maxillary first molars and right central incisor were intruded orthodontically. Miniscrews were used to intrude the maxillary first molars by 3 mm. The mandibular arch was restored with a tooth-supported overdenture. Root coverage of the maxillary right central incisor was performed using Alloderm (Biohorizons, Birmingham, Ala). At the end of the interdisciplinary therapy, the results were es

INTRODUCTION: Facial convexity related to bimaxillary protrusion is prevalent in many populations. Underlying skeletal protrusion combined with increased dentoalveolar protrusion contributes to facial muscle imbalance and lip incompetence, which is undesirable for many patients. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between soft-tissue and hard-tissue changes in an orthodontically treated Asian population.
METHODS: Twenty-four consecutive adult Asian patients (mean age, 24 years), diagnosed with severe bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion, were evaluated using pretreatment and posttrea

Bimaxillary protrusion in a 28-year-old woman was complicated by multiple missing, restoratively compromised, or hopeless teeth. The maxillary right central incisor had a history of avulsion and replantation that subsequently evolved into generalized external root resorption with Class III mobility and severe loss of the supporting periodontium. This complex malocclusion had a discrepancy index of 21, and 8 additional points were scored for the atrophic dental implant site (maxillary right central incisor). The comprehensive treatment plan included extraction of 4 teeth (both maxillary first p

OBJECTIVES: Functional orthodontic devices can modify oral function thus permitting more adequate growth processes. The assessment of their effects should include both facial morphology and muscle function. This preliminary study investigated whether a preformed functional orthodontic device could induce variations in facial morphology and function along with correction of oral dysfunction in a group of orthodontic patients in the mixed and early permanent dentitions.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The three-dimensional coordinates of 50 facial landmarks (forehead, eyes, nose, cheeks, mouth, jaw and e

INTRODUCTION: Deepbites can be corrected by intrusion of mandibular anterior teeth. Direct anchorage with miniscrews simplifies complex tooth movements; however, few studies have reported their use for mandibular anterior intrusion. The purpose of this study was to evaluate, by means of the finite element method, initial tooth displacement and periodontal stress distribution using various mandibular anterior intrusion mechanics. Miniscrews were used as skeletal anchorage devices.
METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography scans were used for 3-dimensional reconstruction of the mandible and the ma
