Insecticide based paint formulations have been available since years, however the concept of using such paint products at household level did not get attention due to various reasons. The advancement in insecticidal paint technology has steered toward the development and evaluation of such formulations for use against arthropod vectors. The improved insecticidal paint formulations may contain two or more active agents, hence could display different type of activity against the target vectors. In the present study, optimum concentrations of deltamethrin (1%), chlorpyriphos (0.5%) and pyriproxyf

BACKGROUND: Mass rearing requires a large colony from which male individuals can be harvested for sterilization and release. Attention is needed when monitoring life parameters of the reared population, knowing that any variations within the target population would lead to mismatching between two populations. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto (s.s.) egg storage on hatchability and life history traits. For each parameter, comparison was made between freshly laid and stored eggs in three densities (40, 80, 120 eggs).
METHODS: Anopheles gambiae s.s

BACKGROUND: The success of the sterile insect technique depends, among other things, on continuous releases of sexually competitive sterile males within the target area. Several factors (including high rearing density and physical manipulation, such as larvae and pupae separation) can influence the quality of males produced in mass-rearing facilities. The different steps in mass production in the laboratory may modify the behaviour of mosquitoes, directly or through loss of natural characters as a result of adaptation to lab rearing, and lead to the competitiveness of sterile male being reduce

The evolution of imaginal cells, or stem cell-like cells, contributed to the spectacular diversification of holometabolous insects, which undergo complete metamorphosis. The proliferation and differentiation of these imaginal cells is under the control of juvenile hormone (JH), but which patterning genes respond to JH is currently unknown. Here, the role of Hedgehog (Hh) signaling in the development of imaginal cells was investigated. RNA interference-mediated knockdown of the components of the Hh signaling pathway showed that Hh is required for the proliferation of polymorphic and imaginal ce

UNLABELLED: Precise control of hormones is essential for animal development. Hormone bioavailability is regulated by their synthesis, transport, sequestration, natural turnover, and programmed degradation. Here, we use Drosophila melanogaster to investigate developmentally programmed degradation of the retinoid-like juvenile hormones (JHs). JHs promote juvenile growth and timely development by functionally opposing the steroid hormone, ecdysone. Despite well-characterized biochemistry, the developmental requirements for programmed JH degradation are poorly understood due to paralogue expansion

INTRODUCTION: Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), commonly known as the fall armyworm, is one of the most destructive insect pests of maize worldwide, causing substantial economic losses. Its widespread occurrence and increasing resistance to conventional insecticides have intensified the need for effective and sustainable management approaches. Reliance on chemical pesticides not only accelerates resistance development but also poses significant risks to the environment and beneficial non-target organisms. Consequently, environmentally friendly alternatives, particularly biological control st

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomus chinensis is the primary vector of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in China. However, the lack of a high-quality genome assembly for this species has limited research on its biology, vector-pathogen interactions, and evolutionary adaptations. To address this critical gap, the first chromosome-level genome assembly of Ph. chinensis was constructed.
METHODS: Nanopore long-read sequencing served as the primary method, complemented by Illumina short-read sequencing for base-level error correction and Hi-C mapping for chromosomal anchoring and chromosome-level scaffolding. Geno

BACKGROUND: While human malaria transmission in Indonesia has declined, reported cases of zoonotic Plasmodium knowlesi are increasing. This study examined the larval habitats of malaria vectors in North Sumatra to assess the potential of larval source management as a control strategy for both human and zoonotic malaria vectors.
METHODS: Multiple larval habitat surveys in the areas surrounding two dusuns with documented human and zoonotic (P. knowlesi) malaria cases in Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, were conducted over 2 years, encompassing both wet and dry seasons. Larval habitats were chara

BACKGROUND: Entomological monitoring of Aedes vectors has largely relied on surveillance of larvae, pupae and non-host-seeking adults, which have been poorly correlated with human disease incidence. Exposure to mosquito-borne diseases can be more directly estimated using human landing catches (HLC), although this method is not recommended for Aedes-borne arboviruses. We evaluated a new method previously tested with malaria vectors, the mosquito electrocuting trap (MET) as an exposure-free alternative for measuring landing rates of Aedes mosquitoes on people. Aims were to (i) compare the MET to

The tracheal (respiratory) system is regarded as one of the key elements which enabled insects to conquer terrestrial habitats and, as a result, achieve extreme species diversity. Despite this fact, anatomical data concerning this biological system is relatively scarce, especially in an ontogenetic context. The purpose of this study is to provide novel and reliable information on the post-embryonic development of the tracheal system of holometabolous insects using micro-computed tomography methods. Data concerning the structure of the respiratory system acquired from different developmental st

BACKGROUND: The Aedes aegypti mosquito is the vector for dengue fever, yellow fever, chikungunya, and zika viruses. Inadequate vector control has contributed to persistence and increase of these diseases. This review assesses the evidence of effectiveness of different control measures in reducing Aedes aegypti proliferation, using standard entomological indices.
METHODS: A systematic search of Medline, Ovid, BVS, LILACS, ARTEMISA, IMBIOMED and MEDIGRAPHIC databases identified cluster randomised controlled trials (CRCTs) of interventions to control Aedes aegypti published between January 2003

In eusocial insects like Bald-faced hornets, Dolichovespula maculata, nest defense is essential because nests contain a large number of protein-rich larvae and pupae, and thus are attractive to nest predators. Our objectives were to investigate whether D. maculata exhibit pheromone-mediated nest defense, and to identify and field test any pheromone components. We tested for pheromone-mediated nest defense behavior of D. maculata by placing a paired box-apparatus near the entrance of D. maculata nests, and treating both boxes with a solvent control, or one of the two boxes with a solvent contro

BACKGROUND: Transcription initiation regulation is mediated by sequence-specific interactions between DNA-binding proteins (transcription factors) and cis-elements, where BRE, TATA, INR, DPE and MTE motifs constitute canonical core motifs for basal transcription initiation of genes. Accurate identification of transcription start site (TSS) and their corresponding promoter regions is critical for delineation of these motifs. To this end, the genome scale analysis of core promoter architecture in insects has been confined to Drosophila. The recently sequenced Tsetse fly genome provides a unique

The reason or reasons why it took Sir Arnold Theiler so many years to unravel the riddle of the aetiology of lamsiekte in cattle and whether P.R. Viljoen's lifelong grudge for receiving insufficient credit from Theiler for his research contribution was justified are analysed in this paper. By 1912, Theiler knew that Duncan Hutcheon had advocated the use of bonemeal as a prophylactic against the disease in the early 1880s. Hutcheon's colleague, J.D. Borthwick, had shown conclusively in a field experiment in 1895 that lamsiekte did not occur in cattle fed a liberal allowance of bonemeal; and bon

The southern province of Guangdong has long been subject to endemic mosquito-borne diseases. In recent years, this region of China has experienced rapid, extensive economic development involving environmental change, making much of the scant knowledge of its mosquito fauna obsolete. This paper reviews previous mosquito surveys, some of which may be too old to be of relevance to present-day conditions, and presents the results of a recent survey of adult and immature mosquitoes. The main vectors of mosquito-borne diseases endemic to the area, such as dengue and Japanese encephalitis virus, deve

Bionomics of fleas (Siphonaptera) parasitizing rodent hosts, mostly the gerbil Gerbillus dasyurus (Wagner) and the jird Meriones crassus Sundevall (Gerbillidae), were investigated in the central Negev desert of Israel. Populations were sampled weekly (by Sherman trapping of hosts) from August 2000 to July 2001. Among 1055 fleas of nine species captured, four species predominated (94%). Two species of Pulicidae, Xenopsylla dipodilli Smit and X. ramesis (Rothschild), reproduced perennially, whereas adults of Nosopsyllus iranus theodori Smit (Ceratophyllidae) and Stenoponia tripectinata medialis

Four wart hogs (Phacochoerus aethiopicus) examined in the Sudan savanna of North-Cameroon were all found infected with two types of skin microfilariae. One was O. ramachandrini Bain, Wahl and Renz, 1993, the adult worms of which live in the subcutaneous tissues of the feet. The other, smaller type belongs to a new Onchocerca species, the adult worms of which were not yet found. O. ramachandrini-microfilariae were evenly distributed across the whole body surface, those of Onchocerca sp. were concentrated on the back. The two species of microfilariae were isolated from an infected hide separated

The Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein and SCAR homolog (WASH; also known as Washout in flies) is a conserved actin-nucleation-promoting factor controlling Arp2/3 complex activity in endosomal sorting and recycling. Previous studies have identified WASH as an essential regulator in Drosophila development. Here, we show that homozygous wash mutant flies are viable and fertile. We demonstrate that Drosophila WASH has conserved functions in integrin receptor recycling and lysosome neutralization. WASH generates actin patches on endosomes and lysosomes, thereby mediating both aforementioned function

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is caused by diminished function of the Survival of Motor Neuron (SMN) protein, but the molecular pathways critical for SMA pathology remain elusive. We have used genetic approaches in invertebrate models to identify conserved SMN loss of function modifier genes. Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans each have a single gene encoding a protein orthologous to human SMN; diminished function of these invertebrate genes causes lethality and neuromuscular defects. To find genes that modulate SMN function defects across species, two approaches were used. Fir
