Effectiveness of Massage Including Proximal Trigger Point Release for Plantar Fasciitis: a Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Plantar fasciitis (PF) is a common degenerative condition of the plantar fascia. Symptoms include tenderness on the plantar surface of the foot, pain on walking after inactivity, and difficulty with daily activities. Rest, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, and manual therapies are frequently used treatments for PF. Trigger point release (TrPR) for PF has been found as a viable treatment option. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of massage, including proximal TrPR, for pain and functional limitations in a patient with PF. METHOD: A student massage therapist from MacEwan Univers

Initial Cerebellar Ataxia in Hereditary Adult-Onset Primary Lateral Sclerosis.

Cerebellar ataxia preceding the apparition of primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) is reported herein. Three individuals from 2 independent kindreds experienced ataxia before developing clinical signs of PLS. Disease onset was during the sixth decade or later, and an insidious onset, with progression exceeding 11 years, was observed. Pathochrony was homogenous, consisting of initial gait instability, followed by hand dysmetria 2 years later. During a 5-year follow-up, cerebellar ataxia remained the sole clinical manifestation, preceding the appearance of muscle stiffness, which progressed to a para

Sensory and motivational modulation of immediate and delayed defensive responses under dynamic threat.

BACKGROUND: Despite the wide variations in defensive behaviors displayed by rats during predator encounters, most laboratory studies have focused on a limited number of behaviors, such as immobility in a small enclosure. Other defensive behaviors such as withdrawal and avoidance have been less investigated. NEW METHOD: Rats repeatedly encountered a fast threatening motion (snapping claws) of a robot predator. The robot was equipped with infrared sensors (millisecond resolution) to detect head entry. A camera placed above arena tracked the body position (sub-second resolution). Sensory and mot

Voluntary ankle flexor activity and adaptive coactivation gain is decreased by spasticity during subacute spinal cord injury.

Although spasticity has been defined as an increase in velocity-dependent stretch reflexes and muscle hypertonia during passive movement, the measurement of flexor muscle paresis may better characterize the negative impact of this syndrome on residual motor function following incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI). In this longitudinal study Tibialis Anterior (TA) muscle paresis produced by a loss in maximal voluntary contraction during dorsiflexion and ankle flexor muscle coactivation during ramp-and-hold controlled plantarflexion was measured in ten patients during subacute iSCI. Tibialis Ante

Tethered cord syndrome.

AIM: Tethered cord syndrome (TCS) is a stretch-induced disorder of the spinal cord. Tethering is due to an inelastic structure anchoring the caudal end of the spinal cord as a short and thick filum terminale. Spinal dysraphism is occasionally associated, but the etiological relationship between these disorders remain unclear. Other anomalies may be concurrently found as hydromielia and Arnold-Chiari malformation. METHODS: The authors analysed neuroradiological findings in 5 children and 9 patients of 20-24 years of age; there were four male and ten female. The criteria for inclusion were neuro

Reliability and sensitivity of a wrist rig to measure motor control and spasticity in poststroke hemiplegia.

BACKGROUND: Objective assessment of impairments after stroke is vital for evidence-based therapy and progress monitoring. OBJECTIVE: This study determines the utility of outcome measures obtained from an instrumented wrist rig for future rehabilitation trials. The tests undertaken were evaluated in terms of sensitivity to detect differences between normal and impaired participants, test-retest repeatability (repeatability coefficient and intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC]), and interrater agreement (Bland and Altman limits of agreement). METHODS: Twelve participants with chronic postst

Effect of androgenic-anabolic steroids and heavy strength training on patellar tendon morphological and mechanical properties.

Combined androgenic-anabolic steroids (AAS) and overloading affects tendon collagen metabolism and ultrastructure and is often associated with a higher risk of injury. The aim of this prospective study was to investigate whether such effects would be reflected in the patellar tendon properties of individuals with a history of long-term resistance training and AAS abuse (RTS group), compared with trained (RT) and untrained (CTRL) nonsteroids users. Tendon cross-sectional area (CSA), stiffness, Young's modulus, and toe limit strain were measured in vivo, from synchronized ultrasonography and dyn

The muscles of the upper airways.

The upper airways are a complex structure with multiple functions; many of the muscles participate in the act of respiration. The neural control of upper airway muscles is distinct from that of chest wall muscles under a variety of circumstances. Coordinated activation of upper airway muscles, both regionally and inter-regionally, results in changes in upper airway size and resistance, alterations in the route of airflow, and increases in the ability of the airways to resist collapse. Several disorders have now been described in which neuromuscular drive abnormalities and/or mechanical dysfunc

Traditional pharmacological treatments for spasticity. Part I: Local treatments.

Spasticity is a velocity-dependent increase in stretch reflex activity. It is one of the forms of muscle overactivity that may affect patients with damage to the central nervous system. Spasticity monitoring is relevant to function because the degree of spasticity may reflect the intensity of other disabling types of muscle overactivity, such as unwanted antagonistic co-contractions, permanent muscle activity in the absence of any stretch or volitional command (spastic dystonia), or inappropriate responses to cutaneous or vegetative inputs. In addition, spasticity, like other muscle overactivi

D-Cycloserine acts via increasing the GluN1 protein expressions in the frontal cortex and decreases the avoidance and risk assessment behaviors in a rat traumatic stress model.

D-cycloserine (DCS), an FDA approved anti-tuberculosis drug has extensively been studied for its cognitive enhancer effects in psychiatric disorders. DCS may enhance the effects of fear extinction trainings in animals during exposure therapy and hence we investigated the effects of DCS on distinct behavioral parameters in a predator odor stress model and tested the optimal duration for repeated daily administrations of the agent. Cat fur odor blocks were used to produce stress and avoidance and risk assessment behavioral parameters were used where DCS or saline were used as treatments in adjun

A trial to assess the efficacy of glutamic acid in prevention of vincristine-induced neurotoxicity in pediatric malignancies: a pilot study.

Vincristine is considered as a backbone of therapy in the induction and consolidation phases of pediatric malignancies. Neurotoxicity is a principal side effect of its use. This study is a randomized single-blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial to evaluate the role of glutamic acid in ameliorating neurotoxicity in pediatric patients with hematologic and solid tumors receiving vincristine during induction course. Fifty-four patients in the glutamic acid group received glutamic acid 1.5 grams daily orally in 3 divided doses during the 4-week induction with vincristine in a dose of 1.5 mg/m²

Mapping of the Sensory Innervation of the Mouse Lung by Specific Vagal and Dorsal Root Ganglion Neuronal Subsets.

The airways are densely innervated by sensory afferent nerves, whose activation regulates respiration and triggers defensive reflexes (e.g., cough, bronchospasm). Airway innervation is heterogeneous, and distinct afferent subsets have distinct functional responses. However, little is known of the innervation patterns of subsets within the lung. A neuroanatomical map is critical for understanding afferent activation under physiological and pathophysiological conditions. Here, we quantified the innervation of the mouse lung by vagal and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) sensory subsets defined by the e

A Validated Smartphone-based Electrocardiogram Reveals Severe Bradyarrhythmias during Immobilizing Restraint in Mice of Both Sexes and Four Strains.

Mouse handling and restraint affect behavior, physiology, and animal welfare, yet little information is available on how various mouse restraint methods affect cardiovascular parameters. We validated the use of a smartphone-based ECG sys- tem in mice by performing simultaneous smartphone and telemetry ECG recordings in conscious, restrained mice and in anesthetized mice. We observed that mice held in standard immobilizing restraint ("scruffing") experienced severe bradycardia. Mice of both sexes and 4 different strains (BALB/cJ, C57BL/6J, DBA/2J, and FVB/nJ) were restrained by 3 handlers using

[Orbital Compartment Syndrome Perhaps Secondary to Intra-Orbital Fluid Retention and Orbital/Palpebral Emphysema Following Frontotemporal Craniotomy for an Unruptured Cerebral Aneurysm:A Case Report].

A 58-year-old woman underwent left frontotemporal craniotomy for clipping of an unruptured cerebral aneurysm. A small defect was accidentally created in the orbital roof intraoperatively. The patient developed left eyelid edema and ocular pain after recovery from anesthesia. The following day, the eyelid edema worsened, and she had difficulty opening her eyes. On the 9th postoperative day, she noticed diminished visual acuity and diplopia in her left eye when she was able to spontaneously open her eyes. Ophthalmological evaluation revealed mild left visual loss, decreased light reflex, ophthal

PMP22 Gene-Associated Neuropathies: Phenotypic Spectrum in a Cohort from India.

Reports of spectrum of clinical manifestations in PMP22 gene-associated neuropathies (duplication/mutations) are scarce. To identify the frequency of PMP22 gene variations and establish their genotype-phenotype correlation. Patients with suspected genetic demyelinating neuropathy (n = 128) underwent evaluation for copy number variations and point mutations in PMP22 gene by multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) and direct sequencing respectively. Of these, only 27 patients (M:F:19:8) from 18 families had PMP22 gene-associated neuropathy; they were subsequently analyzed for gen

Distribution and morphology of sensory and autonomic fibres in the subendocardial plexus of the rat heart.

Cardiac reflexes originating from sensory receptors in the heart ensure blood supply to vital tissues and organs in the face of constantly changing demands. Atrial volume receptors are mechanically sensitive vagal afferents which relay to the medulla and hypothalamus, affecting vasopressin release and renal sympathetic activity. To date, two anatomically distinct sensory endings have been identified which may subserve cardiac mechanosensation: end-nets and flower-spray endings. To map the distribution of atrial receptors in the subendocardial space, we have double-labelled rat right atrial who

Spontaneous spinal epidural hemorrhage following disseminated intravascular coagulation resulting in paraplegia: a case report.

CONTEXT: Spontaneous spinal epidural hemorrhage (SSEH) mostly presents as low back pain with or without a radiculopathy, and rarely with paraplegia or tetraplegia depending on the site and severity of spinal cord compression. We present here a case who had anemia and developed paraplegia following disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) due to a transfusion reaction. FINDINGS: A 65-year-old lady presented with sudden onset chest pain radiating to nape of the neck followed by loss of sensations and power in legs few hours after a blood transfusion. Her past history was negative for diabet
