The congenital disorder of glycosylation in PGM1 (PGM1-CDG) can cause severe cardiomyopathy and unexpected sudden cardiac death in childhood.

INTRODUCTION: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) in the young is rare and should always lead to suspicion of a genetic cardiac disorder. We describe a family, in which the proband was a girl deceased by sudden cardiac death in the playground at thirteen years of age. The index-patient had short stature, cleft palate but no previous cardiac symptoms. We found an uncommon cause of cardiomyopathy, due to a congenital disorder of glycosylation (CDG), previously described to cause a variable range of usually mild symptoms, and not previously found to cause SCD as the first symptom of the condition. METHOD

High prevalence and presumptive treatment of schistosomiasis and strongyloidiasis among African refugees.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis and strongyloidiasis cause substantial morbidity and mortality among hundreds of millions of infected persons worldwide. In the United States, these infections are most commonly found among international travelers, immigrants, and refugees from areas of endemicity. Refugees resettled to the United States since 2000 include >3800 "Lost Boys and Girls" of Sudan and 8000 Somali Bantu. Many Lost Boys and Girls of Sudan reported chronic abdominal pain only since arrival, and some received diagnoses of schistosomiasis or strongyloidiasis. We assessed seroprevalence of the

Experience with Cervical Cancer Screening and Views on HPV Self-Sampling Among Somali American Women.

BACKGROUND: Somali American women have lower cervical cancer screening rates than the general US population. Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing on self-collected samples (HPV self-sampling) has the potential to address cervical cancer screening disparities affecting Somali American women. This study aimed to understand Somali American women's perspectives on cervical cancer screening and HPV self-sampling. METHODS: Forty-four Somali American women participated in six focus groups. Participants were between 30 and 65 years old and were eligible for cervical cancer screening. The discussions fo

Tuberculosis presenting as bilateral vocal fold palsy: case report and review of otolaryngological manifestations of tuberculosis.

OBJECTIVE: We report a rare case of tuberculosis presenting with bilateral vocal fold palsy. METHOD: Case report and discussion of ENT manifestations of tuberculosis. CASE REPORT: A 39-year-old man presented with stridor and bilateral vocal fold palsies, and underwent an emergency tracheostomy. Intra-operatively, a mass was identified overlying the thyroid cartilage. Fine needle aspiration cytology of this mass showed well formed granulomas but negative Ziehl-Nielsen staining. Computed tomography showed the mass to be surrounding the thyroid cartilage, causing airway occlusion; pulmonary inf

Comprehensive epidemiological analysis of chronic kidney disease in adolescents and young adults (ages 10-24 years) from 1990 to 2021.

OBJECTIVES: The burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing globally, with significant variations in disease levels and trends across different countries and regions. Currently, despite a wealth of research reporting data on adult and paediatric populations, there has been a lack of in-depth focus on the burden of CKD in adolescents and young adults (AYA). We aim to assess the global prevalence of CKD among AYA. DESIGN: We implemented a cross-sectional study. DATA SOURCES: A systematic retrieval of data was conducted from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database, primarily using

"In Africa, There Was No Family Planning. Every Year You Just Give Birth": Family Planning Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Among Somali and Congolese Refugee Women After Resettlement to the United States.

It is crucial for refugee service providers to understand the family planning knowledge, attitudes, and practices of refugee women following third country resettlement. Using an ethnographic approach rooted in Reproductive Justice, we conducted six focus groups that included 66 resettled Somali and Congolese women in a western United States (US) metropolitan area. We analyzed data using modified grounded theory. Three themes emerged within the family planning domain: (a) concepts of family, (b) fertility management, and (c) unintended pregnancy. We contextualized these themes within existing f

Global, regional, and national impact of epidemic disasters on health workforce equality between 1990 and 2019: An ecological and modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Global distribution of human resources for health (HRH) is highly unequal and less resourced regions may particularly be vulnerable to disastrous emergencies. We examined HRH losses attributable to epidemics of infectious diseases, both globally and geographically. METHODS AND FINDINGS: First, using 30-year ecological data from the 1990 to 2019 records at international Emergency Events Database and HRH density statistics from the Global Burden of Disease study, we extracted estimates of annual country-specific epidemic events and cadre-specific HRH density data across 194 countrie

Chronic Insomnia as an Uncommon Manifestation of Celiac Disease: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease is an immune-mediated enteropathy with well-established gastrointestinal manifestations; however, its extraintestinal and neuropsychiatric presentations are increasingly recognized. A possible association between celiac disease and neuropsychiatric or sleep-related symptoms, including insomnia, has been described in observational studies, systematic reviews, and population-based analyses. Nevertheless, chronic insomnia as a principal presenting symptom remains an atypical and underreported presentation in the published literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old ma

HIV epidemiology among female sex workers and their clients in the Middle East and North Africa: systematic review, meta-analyses, and meta-regressions.

BACKGROUND: HIV epidemiology among female sex workers (FSWs) and their clients in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is poorly understood. We addressed this gap through a comprehensive epidemiological assessment. METHODS: A systematic review of population size estimation and HIV prevalence studies was conducted and reported following PRISMA guidelines. Risk of bias (ROB) assessments were conducted for all included studies using various quality domains, as informed by Cochrane Collaboration guidelines. The pooled mean HIV prevalence was estimated using random-effects meta-analyses.

Epidemiology of West Nile Virus in the Eastern Mediterranean region: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: West Nile Virus (WNV), a member of the genus Flavivirus, is one of the most widely distributed arboviruses in the world. Despite some evidence for circulation of WNV in countries summarized by the World Health Organization as the Eastern Mediterrian Regional Office (EMRO), comprehensive knowledge about its epidemiology remains largely unknown. This study aims to provide a concise review of the published literature on WNV infections in the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office of WHO (EMRO). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A systematic review of WNV prevalence studies on humans, an

[Intracerebral tuberculomas in a pregnant Somalian woman].

A pregnant Somalian woman aged 28 years, in the Netherlands for the last five years, suffered from a progressive hemiparesis, epilepsia, behavioural problems and low fever. Brain MRI showed multiple lesions with contrast enhancement. Extensive serologic and parasitologic tests on serum and cerebrospinal fluid did not disclose any cause. A brain biopsy revealed only necrosis, but bacterial culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) supplied the diagnosis of 'tuberculosis'. PCR on the cerebrospinal fluid remained negative. In the meantime the chest X-ray showed miliary tuberculosis and a spine

Maternal and perinatal outcomes of Somali migrant women in comparison to host populations in the Global North: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The enduring conflict in Somalia has precipitated significant humanitarian crises, including severely weakened health systems and poor health indicators. The situation has led to almost two million Somalis living abroad, often as refugees or asylum seekers in more high-resource settings in the Global North. To understand outcomes of care of pregnant women and their babies in host countries, this systematic review and meta-analysis aims to synthesise existing evidence on adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes among Somali migrant women compared to host populations. METHODS: We con

Understanding cholera dynamics in African countries with persistent outbreaks: a mathematical modeling approach.

BACKGROUND: Cholera, caused by Vibrio cholerae, is a global health challenge, spreading through water in areas lacking clean water and sanitation. Since 2021, the reemergence of cholera cases has increased significantly in endemic regions in Africa. In particular, the continent experienced severe outbreaks between 2022 and 2024 due to droughts and cyclones, which have placed additional strain on healthcare systems. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the dynamics of cholera outbreaks in eight African countries using mathematical modeling and machine learning and to provide information f
