BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet radiation has been suspected as a possible cause of ocular melanoma. Because this association is controversial, we examine the role of occupational exposure to ultraviolet radiation on the occurrence of this rare cancer.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A population-based case-control study was conducted in 10 French administrative areas (départements). Cases were 50 patients with uveal melanoma diagnosed in 1995-1996. Chemical, occupational, and other exposures as risk factors for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) among homosexual men are reported from a population-based case-control study of 1593 eligible subjects with NHL and 2515 control subjects conducted in the San Francisco Bay Area between 1988 and 1995. This report presents the results of proportionate mortality ratios (PMR) and proportionate cancer mortality ratios (PCMR) among 13,301 members of the International Union of Bridge, Structural, and Ornamental Ironworkers who had been members for a minimum of 1 year, were actively paying dues into the death beneficiary fund, and had died between 1984-1991.
