BACKGROUND: Malaria still remains a major health issue in Ghana despite the introduction of Artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) coupled with other preventative measures such as the use of insecticide treated nets (ITNs). The global quest for eradication of malaria has heightened the interest of identifying drugs that target the sexual stage of the parasite, referred to as transmission-blocking drugs. This study aimed at assessing the efficacy and gametocydal effects of some commonly used herbal malaria products in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: In the aftermath of Covid-19, some patients develop a fibrotic lung disease, i.e., p ost- C OVID-19 l ung d isease (PCLD), for which we currently lack insights into pathogenesis, disease models, or treatment options.
METHOD: Using an AI-guided approach, we analyzed > 1000 human lung transcriptomic datasets associated with various lung conditions using two viral pandemic signatures (ViP and sViP) and one covid lung-derived signature. Upon identifying similarities between COVID-19 and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), we subsequently dissected the basis for such similarity from m

Accurate mapping of woody biomass and its temporal change is critical for understanding the global carbon balance, informing restoration and supporting evidence-based policy on climate mitigation and livelihoods. The vegetation of the dry tropics, comprised largely of dry forests and savannas, holds substantial woody carbon stocks, but both stocks and change over time remain uncertain. Where Earth Observation (EO) data have been used to estimate change over time, different products give conflicting results on the direction, magnitude and location of change. We present pan-dry-tropical maps of

The intradialytic symptoms that can be linked to components of the extracorporeal circuit of greatest clinical importance are the Type A (anaphylactoid) reactions. Most of these are IgE-mediated reactions due to ethylene oxide and are preventable by adequate degassing of the dialyzer by the manufacturer and by adequate rinsing of the dialyzer just prior to use. AN69-associated reactions are a second group, and are probably mediated by membrane-induced bradykinin generation coupled with ACE-inhibitor induced prolongation of bradykinin half-life. Type A reactions occur in a reuse setting, alos,

BACKGROUND: Traditional medicinal knowledge is central to healthcare and cultural identity in Ethiopia, particularly in the Somali Region, where plant-based remedies are widely used. Despite its importance, this knowledge remains underdocumented. This study aims to fill this gap by documenting the medicinal plants (MPs) used by the Somali community in the Karamara forest patches of eastern Ethiopia, focusing on their cultural significance, conservation status, and role in local healthcare. It also highlights the need to preserve both the knowledge and the threatened ecosystems that support it.

The increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) bacteria poses a major global health threat, compounded by the limited development of new antibiotics. To address this challenge, alternative strategies, including nanoparticle-based therapies, are being explored. This study investigates the antimicrobial properties of green-synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) derived from leaf extracts of Ocimum gratissimum (OG), Apium graveolens (AG), and Aloe arborescens (AA). These plant extracts act as reducing, capping, and stabilizing agents during the synthesis process. By controlling the

BACKGROUND: Traditional medicines remained as the most affordable and easily accessible source of treatment in the primary health care system among diverse communities in Ethiopia. The Oromo community living in the prehistoric Harla and Dengego valleys has long history of ethnomedicinal know-how and practice against human and livestock ailments. However, this rich ethnomedicinal knowledge had been remained unexplored hitherto. This study focus on the comprehensive ethnomedicinal investigation in an attempt to safeguard the deteriorating ethnomedicinal knowledge that can be used as a stepping-s

Naturally occurring carbohydrates play a crucial role in the food nutritional and medicinal properties of plants. However, measuring these sugars in common herbal products is still not well established, especially for those intended for diabetic patients. The sugar content in these products directly impacts their safety, effectiveness, and authenticity. This study presents a straightforward isocratic high -performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method with a refractive index (RI) detector. It allows for the simultaneous identification and measurement of seven sugars: D-(-)-Ribose, D-(+)-Xylo

Cisplatin (CP) is a highly effective, heavy-metal chemotherapeutic agent widely utilized in the treatment of various solid tumors. But its use in therapeutic settings is fundamentally constrained by dosage toxicities, most notably severe nephrotoxicity. Aloesin, a bioactive C-glycosylated chromone naturally derived from Aloe vera, possesses strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This investigation clarifies the precise molecular mechanisms by which aloesin attenuates CP-induced renal injury in a rodent model. A total of 36 male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to six experiment

BACKGROUND: Current pharmacotherapies for chronic kidney disease (CKD) are limited by adverse effects and a "one-target-one-drug" paradigm. Necroptosis is a key driver of renal deterioration, yet its regulatory network remains poorly defined. Modified Da-Huang-Fu-Zi Decoction (DHFZ) has shown clinical efficacy, although its underlying mechanism, particularly in relation to necroptosis, requires further clarification.
METHODS: Bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing data from human kidneys were integrated to screen for necroptosis-related genes in CKD. Systems pharmacology was used to identify key
