BACKGROUND: Efforts to phenotype veterans that developed respiratory symptoms following deployments to the Southwest Asia Theater of Military Operation have been limited by the insensitivity of current non-invasive testing to objectively identify deployment-related constrictive bronchiolitis and other features of chronic lung injury. In this study, we derived a quantitative CT (QCT)-based radiographic phenotype of biopsy-proven deployment-related constrictive bronchiolitis (DRCB) and assessed its ability to assist in the phenotyping of non-biopsied formerly deployed symptomatic veterans.

From January 1 to April 22, 2014, an online analyzer for monitoring aerosols and gases (MARGA) was used to measure and analyze water-soluble ions in inhalable particulate matter with a diameter less than 10 μm (PM10) during winter-spring in Shenyang city, China. The results yielded three main findings. (1) During the entire observation period and in seven pollution episodes, SO42-, NO3-, and NH4+ (SNA) accounted for 84.4-93.1% of the total water-soluble ions (TWSIs). TWSIs accounted for 32% of PM10 mass during the entire observation period, and the contribution of TWSIs in PM10 ranged from 33.

To evaluate the ability of arteriovenous carbon dioxide removal (AVCO2R) to maintain hemodynamic stability during treatment of adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), we used our smoke/burn, LD40 sheep model of ARDS. By means of cranial computer tomography, it is possible to demonstrate the cerebral consequences of severe intoxications in vivo. A variety of different toxic agents produce similar disease patterns, which are thought to be due to fall in blood pressure caused by the toxin. The lesions are mainly localised in the basal ganglia at the borders of contiguous vascular territories. Six patients observed by the authors are described.

BACKGROUND: To assess patterns of injury and liability associated with operating room (OR) fires, closed malpractice claims in the American Society of Anesthesiologists Closed Claims Database since 1985 were reviewed.
METHODS: All claims related to fires in the OR were compared with nonfire-related surgical anesthesia claims. An analysis of fire-related claims was performed to identify causative factors.

The affect of paralysis-related comorbidities on outcomes in burn-injured patients has not been explored. We hypothesize that comorbid paralysis is associated with increased morbidity in this population. All burned patients with prior diagnoses of paralysis were identified from the National Burn Repository (Version 8.0).
