This paper presents a critical review of model-input parameters for transport of on-site wastewater treatment system (OWS) pollutants. Approximately 25% of the U.S. population relies on soil-based OWS for effective treatment and protection of public health and environmental quality. Mathematical models are useful tools for understanding and predicting the transport and fate of wastewater pollutants and for addressing water-budget issues related to wastewater reclamation from site to watershed scales. However, input parameters for models that simulate fate and transport of OWS pollutants are no

The effects of trichloroethylene (TCE) and toluene on soil nitrogen-cycling activities were examined. Ammonium oxidation potential (AOP) was reduced after incubation with as little as 1 microgram of TCE ml-1, and the effects were generally greater when toluene was present and increased with longer exposure. Arginine ammonification potential and denitrification enzyme activity were constant regardless of TCE concentration or the presence of toluene, while nitrite oxidation potential (NOP) exhibited variable sensitivity. KCl-extractable ammonium levels increased dramatically after exposure to 30

The free-radical intermediates and the stable products formed on one-electron oxidation of hydroxyguanidine (HOG) were investigated in order to suggest a mechanistic basis for HOG-induced cytotoxicity and cytostasis in leukaemia HL60 cells. The azide radical (generated radiolytically) reacted with HOG to produce a carbon-centred radical which in the absence of oxygen decays by a first-order process (k = 3.2 x 10(3) s-1) to yield nitric oxide (NO) and urea. Although the HOG radical reacts rapidly with oxygen (rate constant for O2 addition, k = 4.2 x 10(8) dm3 mol-1 s-1) this neither prevented t

Optimising nature-based solutions for the removal of dissolved pollutants is essential for their adoption as end-of-pipe solutions in urban drainage systems. This study evaluates the performance of a repurposed iron-coated granulate, sourced from a drinking water treatment plant, as an amendment in bioretention systems. In a column experiment, a control media mixture of pumice and coconut fibres was compared to one amended with 10 % iron-coated granulate. Four configurations were tested: media-only, media with vegetation, media with a zone, saturated with water, and media with both vegetation

Copper-containing nitrite reductases (CuNiRs) catalyse the reduction of nitrite to nitric oxide and are a key enzyme in the anaerobic ammonium oxidation and denitrification steps of the nitrogen cycle. The recent recognition of the widespread distribution of three-domain CuNiRs where cognate redox partners are fused to the core NiR enzyme offered the possibility of studying coordinated events (e.g. proton-coupled electron transfer) in a conformationally stable donor-acceptor complex. The C-terminal cytochrome c tethered domain of the CuNiR from Ralstonia pickettii (RpNiR) has been well studied

Wildfires drastically alter biogeochemical cycling and transport of nutrient elements, including nitrogen (N), from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems, with the potential to degrade water quality. Understanding the impact of characteristics of wildfire-derived ashes and burned soils on the mobilization of N is essential for effectively managing wildfires and mitigating adverse effects on watershed functions. This study quantified the mobility of N in soils and ashes influenced by wildfires in the northern California/Nevada region in the western United States (Dixie, Beckwourth, and Caldor fires

Livestock farming odors, particularly those caused by ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, pose significant environmental and public health challenges. This study evaluates the performance of a biofilter enhanced with five composite fillers to simultaneously remove ammonia and hydrogen sulfide from chicken manure treatment emissions. Systematic evaluation of different fillers (bark, ceramsite, volcanics, polyurethane pellets, and ceramsite + volcanics) and optimization of the spray rate (24 ∼ 168 L/h) were performed. This study demonstrates that the ceramsite composite filler achieved optimal removal

Heme nitrite reductases (NiRs) are key enzymes in the assimilatory and dissimilatory reduction of nitrite (NO2-) by 6e-/8H+ to NH4+ and by 1e-/2H+ to NO during denitrification in the global nitrogen cycle. The different heme cofactors in different NiRs are flanked by highly conserved second-sphere basic residues in their active sites, e.g., histidine, lysine, and arginine. Biochemical and computational investigations have indicated that these basic residues offer hydrogen bond stabilization and provide protons to the intermediate species formed during NO2- reduction. Tire wear particles (TWPs), mainly generated through friction between tires and road surfaces, represent a major source of traffic-related microplastic pollution, posing threats to biota and ecosystem functions. These particles are a complex mixture of toxic compounds, including heavy metals (e.g., zinc) and organic compounds (e.g., 6-PPD), and their diverse leachates exacerbate their ecological impacts. This review collates current knowledge on the occurrence of TWPs and their leachates in aquatic systems, emphasizing their toxicological effects on species and cascading ecological consequence

Dewatering of waste activated sludge is a necessary step for achieving subsequent reduction, stabilization, and resource utilization. In this study, Fe2+/periodate (PI) coupled with polyoxometalates (POMs) conditioning was tested for realizing sludge deep dewatering. After the addition of POMs (0.20 mmol g-1 VSS), Fe2+/PI/POMs conditioning enhanced the efficiency of sludge dewatering by 42.93% compared to Fe2+/PI conditioning. It was found that the electrostatic repulsion posed a significant influence on the interaction between POMs and proteins. The reduction of electrostatic repulsion facili

Constructed wetlands use vegetation and microorganisms to remove contaminants like nitrogen and phosphorus from water. For mariculture, the impact of salinity on the efficiency of wastewater treatment of wetlands is unneglectable. However, little is known about their impact on the microbiome in constructed wetlands. Here, we set four salinity levels (15, 22, 29, and 36) in Salicornia constructed wetlands, and the experiment was conducted for a period of 72 days. The 15 group exhibited the highest removal rates of nitrogen compounds and phosphate, compared to the other salinity groups, the nosZ

Diclofenac is a pharmaceutical active compound frequently detected in wastewater and water bodies, and often reported to be persistent and difficult to biodegrade. While many previous studies have focussed on assessing diclofenac biodegradation in nitrification and denitrification processes, this study focusses on diclofenac biodegradation in the enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process, where the efficiency of this process for diclofenac biodegradation as well as the metabolites generated are not well understood. As it has a simple system and a small floor area, flue gas simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification technology has a good development prospect, and related research has become a hot topic in the field of flue gas purification. In this work, a novel simultaneous removal technology of NO and SO2 from flue gas using a semi-dry microwave activation persulfate system was developed for the first time. A series of experiments and characterization analyses had been implemented to research the feasibility of this new flue gas purification technology. The oxidation products, free radicals, and m

INTRODUCTION: The ST-4821 complex (cc4821) is a leading cause of serogroup C and serogroup B invasive meningococcal disease in China where diverse strains in two phylogenetic groups (groups 1 and 2) have acquired fluoroquinolone resistance. cc4821 was recently prevalent among carriage isolates in men who have sex with men in New York City (USA). Genome-level population studies have thus far been limited to Chinese isolates. The aim of the present study was to build upon these with an extended panel of international cc4821 isolates.
METHODS: Genomes of isolates from Asia (1972 to 2017), Europe

In this study, a laboratory scale experiment for the treatment of synthetic molasses wastewater using a combination of an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) and a two-stage down-flow hanging sponge (TSDHS) reactor (ABR-TSDHS system) was conducted. The TSDHS comprised a closed-type first-stage down-flow hanging sponge (first DHS) for desulfurization and an open-type second-stage DHS (second DHS) for post-treatment of effluent from the ABR and first DHS. Effluent from the second DHS was sprinkled on top of the first DHS, whereas biogas produced from the ABR was supplied to its bottom. A chemical ox

Nitrate concentration in most aquifers in arid and semi-arid areas has increased in the past several decades as a result of human activities. Under the predominantly oxic conditions of these aquifers, denitrification is inhibited, allowing nitrate, a soluble and stable form of nitrogen (N), to accumulate. Because of its close association with municipal and agricultural wastes, nitrate is commonly used as an indicator of anthropogenic contamination. Aquifers affected by agricultural waste may contain salts from irrigation returns and herbicides in addition to nitrates. Preventing leakage from s

Swine wastewater management is often affected by two main issues: a too high volume for optimal reuse as a fertilizer and a too high strength for an economically sustainable treatment by classical solutions. Hence, an innovative scheme has been tested to treat swine wastewater, combining a low cost anaerobic reactor, upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB), with intensified constructed wetlands (aerated CWs) in a pilot scale experimental study. The swine wastewater described in this paper is produced by a swine production facility situated in North Italy. The scheme of the pilot plant consisted

The use of ethanol in alternative fuels has led to contamination of groundwater with high concentrations of this easily biodegradable organic compound. Previous laboratory and field studies have shown vigorous biodegradation of ethanol plumes, with prevalence of reducing conditions and methanogenesis. The objective of this study was to further our understanding of the dynamic biogeochemistry processes, especially dissolved gas production, that may occur in developing and aging plume cores at sites with ethanol or other organic contamination of groundwater. The experiment performed involved hig

The impacts of CuO nanoparticle (NP) exposure on total nitrogen (TN) removal in a sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) as well as the effects of natural organic matter (NOM) in wastewater were studied. Short-term exposure (8 h) to 1 and 50 mg/L CuO NPs induced negligible influence on the nitrogen removal efficiency, and biofilms could recover from the slight damage caused by the prolonged exposure (45 days) to 1 mg/L CuO NPs. On the other hand, long-term exposure to 50 mg/L CuO NPs notably decreased the nitrogen removal efficiencies to 47.74 and 59.04 % in the absence and presence of bovine
