OBJECTIVE: Antimicrobial resistance is a growing worldwide problem and is considered to be one of the biggest threats to global health by the World Health Organization. Insights into the determinants of antibiotic prescribing may be gained by comparing the antibiotic usage patterns of Australia and Sweden.
DESIGN: Publicly available data on dispensed use of antibiotics in Australia and Sweden between 2006 and 2018. Medicine use was measured using defined daily dose per 1,000 inhabitants per day (DDD/1000/day) and the number of dispensed prescriptions per 1000 inhabitants (prescriptions/1000).

Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, a resident anaerobic bacterium commonly found in healthy gut microbiota, has been proposed as a next generation probiotic with high potential for application in food matrices and pharmaceutical formulations. Despite its recognized health benefits, detailed information regarding its antimicrobial susceptibility profile is still lacking. However, this information is crucial to determine its safety, since the absence of acquired antimicrobial resistance is required to qualify a probiotic candidate as safe for human and animal consumption. Herein, the antimicrobial su

Anaerobic bacteria of the genus Bacteroides are a large group of commensal microorganisms that colonize the human and animal digestive tract. The genus Bacteroides and the closely related genus Parabacteroides include the Bacteroides fragilis group (BFG) of potentially pathogenic bacteria which are frequently isolated from patients with anaerobic infections. The aim of this study was to assess the antimicrobial resistance of environmental strains of the Bacteroides fragilis group. Strains were isolated from human feces, hospital wastewater, influent (UWW) and effluent (TWW) wastewater from a w

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacteria is an increasing health concern. The spread of AMR bacteria (AMRB) between animals and humans via the food chain and the exchange of AMR genes requires holistic approaches for risk mitigation. The AMRB exposure of humans via food is currently only poorly understood leaving an important gap for intervention design. Method: This study aimed to assess AMRB prevalence in retail food and subsequent exposure of Swiss consumers in a systematic literature review of data published between 1996 and 2016 covering the Swiss agriculture sector and rele

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial use in livestock is one of the factors contributing to selection and spread of resistant microorganisms in the environment. National veterinary antimicrobial consumption monitoring programs are therefore in place in a number of countries in the European Union. However, due to differences in methodology, results on veterinary antimicrobial consumption from these national monitoring programs cannot be compared internationally. International comparison is highly needed to establish regulations on veterinary antimicrobial use and reducing antimicrobial resistance. The aim

Antimicrobial use (AMU) data are critical for formulating policies for containing antimicrobial resistance. The present study determined AMU on Canadian dairy farms and characterized variation in AMU based on herd-level factors such as milk production, somatic cell count, herd size, geographic region and housing type. Drug use data were collected on 89 dairy herds in 4 regions of Canada, Alberta, Ontario, Québec, and the Maritime provinces (Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia) for an average of 540 d per herd. Dairy producers and farm personnel were asked to deposit empty drug

BACKGROUND: Infections during gestation, delivery and the postnatal period can jeopardise not only the mother, but also the child. Along with chromosomal abnormalities and immunological diseases, infection in early pregnancy represents the most important reason for abortion. During the second and third trimester, infections are the principal cause for preterm labour, premature membrane rupture, premature delivery and the resultant complications in the newborn child. Many pregnant women are very cautious about taking antibiotics due to primarily potentially detrimental effects on the unborn chi

PURPOSE: Resistance to macrolide, lincosamide, and streptogramin B (MLSB) antibiotics in Staphylococcus aureus has emerged as a significant therapeutic challenge. erm gene-encoded ribosomal methylation is expressed either constitutively or inducibly, causing resistance to erythromycin and clindamycin with possible induction of clindamycin resistance during therapy. msrA-mediated active drug efflux confers resistance to macrolides and streptogramin B while preserving clindamycin susceptibility. This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of S. aureus isolates and corr

INTRODUCTION: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a leading etiological agent of neonatal sepsis and meningitis, as well as invasive infections that predominately affect adults over 65 and people with comorbidities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) nationwide surveillance has identified rising clindamycin and erythromycin resistance as a concerning level threat for invasive GBS infections. West Virginia (WV) is a rural state outside the CDC catchment area, therefore, we investigated 65 WV-GBS isolates identified in clinical specimens from various sources for serotype distribut

Nasally colonized staphylococci carry antibiotic resistance genes and may lead to serious opportunistic infections. We are investigating nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococci other than S. aureus (SOSA) among young volunteers in Egypt to determine their risk potential. Nasal swabs collected over 1 week in June 2019 from 196 volunteers were cultured for staphylococcus isolation. The participants were interviewed to assess sex, age, general health, hospitalization and personal hygiene habits. Identification was carried out using biochemical tests and VITEK 2 automated system.

Methicillin resistance mediated by the mecA gene in Staphylococcus aureus, also known as "true MRSA", is typically associated with high oxacillin MIC values (≥8 mg/L). Because non-mecA-mediated oxacillin resistant S. aureus phenotypes can also cause hard-to-treat diseases in humans, their misidentification as methicillin-susceptible S. aureus strains (MSSA) can compromise the efficiency of the antimicrobial therapy. These strains have been refereed as Borderline Oxacillin-Resistant S. aureus (BORSA) but their characterization and role in clinical microbiology have been neglected. Considering t

Although lifestyle and physiology in obese individuals are accepted to lead to changes in the intestinal microbiota, uncertainty remains about microbiota dysbiosis, and xenobiotics intake, as a source of selective pressure, independent of antimicrobial chemotherapy. The aim of this study was to compare the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance genetic markers (ARG) in faecal specimens of eutrophic, overweight and obese individuals, and their correlation with xenobiotic intake and gut bacteria density. Methods: This was a cross-sectional case-controlled study including 72 adult participants wi

Metagenomic investigations have the potential to provide unprecedented insights into microbial ecologies, such as those relating to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We characterized the microbial resistome in livestock operations raising cattle conventionally (CONV) or without antibiotic exposures (RWA) using shotgun metagenomics. Samples of feces, wastewater from catchment basins, and soil where wastewater was applied were collected from CONV and RWA feedlot and dairy farms. After DNA extraction and sequencing, shotgun metagenomic reads were aligned to reference databases for identification of

Our multicenter nationwide surveillance data indicated that erythromycin (ERY) resistance among group A Streptococcus (GAS) isolates in Taiwan declined from 53.1% in 1998 and 2000 to 14.6% in 2002 and 2004 and 10.7% in 2006 to 2010 (P < 0.01). The present study aimed to assess the epidemiology of GAS in Taiwan and identify factors associated with ERY resistance. All 127 ERY-resistant (ERY(r)) isolates and 128 randomly selected ERY-susceptible (ERY(s)) isolates recovered from 1998 to 2010 were emm typed. ERY(r) isolates were also characterized by ERY resistance phenotype and mechanisms and puls

Emerging resistance among Streptococcus pneumoniae to penicillin, erythromycin, clindamycin, tetracyclines, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole continues to compromise orally administered therapy for community-acquired respiratory tract infections. Concern also exists that multidrug-resistant (MDR) S. pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae strains could develop fluoroquinolone resistance (FQR). S. pneumoniae (2379 strains), H. influenzae (2456), and Moraxella catarrhalis (901) studied as part of the SENTRY Antimicrobial Surveillance Program in 2003 were tested by reference MIC methods against 16

Telithromycin is the first member of a new family of the macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin-B (MLS(B)) class of antimicrobials, the ketolides. It has a good spectrum of activity against respiratory pathogens, including penicillin- and erythromycin-resistant pneumococci, as well as intracellular and atypical bacteria. Furthermore, it has a low potential to select for resistance or induce cross-resistance among other MLS(B) antimicrobials. At the recommended dosage of 800 mg orally once daily, telithromycin reaches maximal plasma concentrations of about 2 mg/L. It penetrates rapidly into bronch

Microplastics (MPs) and their associated biofilms, collectively known as the plastisphere, are emerging as environmental vectors of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, whether MPs preferentially retain health-relevant resistance genes remains unclear. This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing ARG profiles on MPs and in surrounding freshwater environments. The meta-analysis revealed significant ARG enrichment in MP biofilms compared to water. Subgroup analyses further revealed that MPs enriched several mobile and enzyme-mediated resistance categories, includi
