Apical root resorption of incisors after orthodontic treatment of impacted maxillary canines: a radiographic study.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of the study was to evaluate impacted maxillary canines as risk factor for orthodontic apical root resorption. METHODS: The sample comprised 66 patients treated with fixed appliances. Thirty-two patients with a unilateral impacted maxillary canine, which was distanced from the roots of the incisors at a preliminary phase of treatment before bonding, formed the impaction group, and 34 patients without impactions served as the controls. Root shortening was calculated by using pretreatment and posttreatment intraoral radiographs. Inclination of the eruption path of the

Correlation between dental maturity and cervical vertebral maturity.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between dental and skeletal maturity. STUDY DESIGN: Digital panoramic radiographs and lateral skull cephalograms of 302 patients (134 boys and 168 girls, ranging from 8 to 16 years of age) were examined. Dental maturity was assessed by calcification stages of the mandibular canines, first and second premolars, and second molars, whereas skeletal maturity was estimated by the cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) stages. The Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient was used to measure the association between CVM stage and den

Reattachment of subgingivally fractured central incisor with an open apex.

A case report of a 6-year-old girl with a fractured maxillary left central incisor with an open apex is presented. The procedure used to repair the fracture included flap surgery with an intrasulcular incision and endodontic treatment. The patient was called for 3 months regular follow-up to check the root formation. At the end of 32 months just before the root was obturated by guttaperka, she fractured the same tooth. Flap surgery was repeated and the tooth was restored. The root canal was obturated with a root filling paste and guttaperka as the apex was closed. Examination 10 months after t

Craniofacial and dental manifestations of Proteus syndrome: a case report.

The Proteus syndrome is a rare congenital hamartomatous condition that is characterized by a wide range of malformations, sometimes involving the face. Common manifestations include partial gigantism, congenital lipomas, and plantar hyperplasia. In this report we describe the craniofacial clinicopathological development in a girl with Proteus syndrome from age 6 to 20 years. The patient had pronounced hemifacial hypertrophy, exostoses in the left parietal region, and enlargement of the inferior alveolar nerve and mandibular canal in the affected region. The dental development of the affected l

Interleukin-1 (IL-1) bioactivity and inhibition of IL-1 bioactivity in supernatant fluid from cultured microphthalmic (mi) mice teeth of different ages.

A functioning dental follicle and bone resorption are necessary for tooth eruption. In the microphthalmic (mi) mouse, bone resorption is defective and teeth fail to erupt. Local bone metabolism involves the production of cytokines such as interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1 alpha) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta). The production of these cytokines by dental tissues during eruption may be fundamental to tooth movement. Molars from mi mice were cultured and supernatants tested for the presence of these cytokines using bio-dot blotting and ELISA. A thymocyte bioassay was used to test supernat

Gli2 and Gli3 synergistically mediate HH-TGF-β crosstalk in mesenchymal progenitor cells to orchestrate tooth root morphogenesis.

Hedgehog (HH) signaling is essential in directing the fate determination of postmigratory cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs) to ensure proper craniofacial development. Gli transcription factors (TFs) are established as primary effectors of HH signaling, yet their distinct roles and regulatory mechanisms in governing cell commitment and differentiation of postmigratory CNCCs remain poorly understood. Here, using tooth root as a model, we combined transgenic mouse models with bioinformatic analyses to interrogate the functions of Gli2 and Gli3 in CNCC-derived root progenitor cells of the mouse m

Retrospective study of 100 autotransplanted teeth with complete root formation and subsequent orthodontic treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Autotransplantation has become a major therapeutic option for replacing missing teeth in adult orthodontic patients. However, little systematic information is available about the long-term stability of autotransplanted teeth with complete root formation after the application of an orthodontic force. The objective of this study was to investigate the outcomes of autotransplanted teeth with complete root formation that underwent orthodontic treatment. METHODS: One hundred teeth, autotransplanted in 89 patients, were examined over a mean observation period of 5.8 years. Orthodontic

Novel PAX9 mutations cause non-syndromic tooth agenesis.

PAX9 is a transcription factor expressed in the tooth mesenchyme during tooth morphogenesis. In Pax9-null mice, tooth development is arrested at the bud stage. In humans, heterozygous mutations in PAX9 have been associated with non-syndromic tooth agenesis, predominantly in the molars. Here, we report 2 novel mutations in the paired domain of PAX9, a three-nucleotide deletion (73-75 delATC) and a missense mutation (C146T), in two unrelated Japanese patients with non-syndromic tooth agenesis. The individual with the 73-75del ATC mutation was missing all maxillary molars and mandibular second an

Long-term evaluation and clinical outcomes of children with dental transplants in Temuco city, Chile.

AIM: To assess the clinical and radiographic outcomes of 36 transplanted teeth and the possible factors affecting the results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 26 children, 36 teeth transplants were performed. The main reason for transplantations was the loss of anterior teeth due to trauma; 80.5% of transplanted teeth were immature bicuspids. The transplants were clinically and radiolographycally monitored in respect of pulp vitality, root canal obliteration, periradicular changes and root formation. Fisher Exact Test and Kaplan-Meier analyses were performed to determine the association between the

Traumatic intrusion of permanent teeth. Part 2. A clinical study of the effect of preinjury and injury factors, such as sex, age, stage of root development, tooth location, and extent of injury including number of intruded teeth on 140 intruded permanent teeth.

A prospective study of 140 intruded permanent teeth was done to evaluate the following healing complications: pulp necrosis (PN), root resorption (surface, inflammatory and replacement resorption) (RR) and defects in marginal periodontal healing (MA). These complications were related to various preinjury and injury factors. Age appeared to be related to all three healing complications in that patients younger than 12 years had the lowest complication rate. Stage of root formation at the time of the injury was very strongly related to PN and MA, with immature root formation (i.e. incomplete roo

Localization of EMSP1 expression during tooth formation and cloning of mouse cDNA.

Enamel matrix serine proteinase 1 (EMSP1) is a proteolytic enzyme that has been isolated from the developing enamel of pig teeth. Its apparent function is to degrade the organic matrix in preparation for enamel maturation. The expression of EMSP1 has never been investigated in another organism besides the pig, and EMSP1 expression in the enamel organ has never been specifically demonstrated in ameloblasts. Here we report the expression of recombinant pig EMSP 1 (rpEMSP 1), the generation of rabbit polyclonal antibodies against rpEMSP1, the characterization of the antibodies and EMSP1 expressio

Effect of ascorbic acid deficiency on primary and reparative dentinogenesis in non-ascorbate-synthesizing ODS rats.

Ascorbic acid is essential to the biosynthesis of collagen, the major organic matrix component of dentine. The ODS rat is a mutant strain of Wistar rat characterized by hereditary lack of L-gulono-gamma-lactone oxidase and thus is unable to synthesize ascorbic acid. ODS rats were given an ascorbic acid-free diet to investigate how ascorbic acid deficiency affects dentine formation in vivo. Histomorphometric analysis on their growing molars and incisors showed a significant reduction in both size and mineral apposition rate of dentine, as revealed by contact microradiography and fluorescent tim

Effects of preterm birth on oral growth and development.

Preterm and low birthweight children comprise approximately 6 per cent of all live births. They are prone to many serious medical problems during the neonatal period which may affect the development of oral tissues. The present paper reviews the results of this author's own decade of research into the oral development of preterm children in the light of current understanding of the field. Studies have shown a high prevalence of generalized enamel hypoplasia in the primary dentition of around 40-70 per cent in preterm children which is likely to be associated with low bone mineral stores. The c

Dentinogenesis and Tooth-Alveolar Bone Complex Defects in BMP9/GDF2 Knockout Mice.

Tooth development is regulated by sequential and reciprocal epithelium-mesenchymal interactions and their related molecular signaling pathways, such as bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs). Among the 14 types of BMPs, BMP9 (also known as growth differentiation factor 2) is one of the most potent BMPs to induce osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells. The purpose of this study was to examine potential roles of BMP9 signaling in tooth development. First, we detected the expression pattern of BMP9 in tooth germ during postnatal tooth development, and we found that BMP9 was widely expre
