Paranasal Volume Enhancement With Sticky Bone to Improve Nasolabial Fold Aesthetics in Orthognathic Surgery Patients: A Case Report.

PURPOSE: The paranasal region is a frequent source of aesthetic complaints in patients with dentofacial deformities, and soft tissue projection in this area does not always follow the skeletal movements achieved in orthognathic surgery. Sticky Bone-a particulate bone graft matrix agglutinated by platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)-has an established role in regenerative procedures in implant dentistry; however, to the best of the authors' knowledge, its use for paranasal volume enhancement during orthognathic surgery had not been previously described. The present report introduces this novel applicatio

Mastication-Induced Brain Blood Flow Changes Before and After Surgical-Orthodontic Treatment in Skeletal Class III Patients: A Pilot Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular prognathism attenuates chewing-induced brain blood flow (BBF) in the bilateral inferior frontal gyrus, correlating with compromised masticatory function and cognitive performance. Surgical orthodontic treatment restores skeletal and occlusal relationships and reorganises jaw sensorimotor function; however, its effects on masticatory cortical haemodynamics remain unexplored. OBJECTIVES: This pilot study aimed to characterise longitudinal and cross-sectional BBF changes following surgical orthodontic treatment in skeletal Class III patients, and to explore whether pre-tre

Crouzonodermoskeletal syndrome requires individualized surgical management: Scoping review of a rare complex craniofacial syndrome.

Crouzonodermoskeletal syndrome (CDSS) is a rare condition characterized by premature fusion of the coronal sutures, midface hypoplasia, beaked nasal deformity, mandibular prognathism, and proptosis. A specific mutation in the Fibroblast Growth Factor 3 (FGFR3) gene causes CDSS (Ala391Glu) and thus provides a diagnostic marker for early identification. Beyond the Crouzon syndrome-like craniofacial appearance, the CDSS phenotype includes acanthosis nigricans, choanal stenosis/atresia, hydrocephalus, Chiari malformation, and achondroplasia, although presentations vary substantially throughout the

3D simulation of interosseous interference in sagittal split ramus osteotomy for mandibular asymmetry.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pattern of predicted interosseous interference and to determine the influencing factor to volume of bony interference using a computer-assisted simulation system. This retrospective study recruited 116 patients with mandibular prognathism who had undergone sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) with or without maxillary osteotomy. The patients were divided into 3 groups according to the amount of menton (Me) deviation: less than 2 mm (Group 1), 2-4 mm (Group 2), and more than 4 mm (Group 3). Changes in the distal segments following BSSRO

Morphological description and evolutionary significance of 300 ka hominin facial bones from Hualongdong, China.

Late Middle Pleistocene hominins in Africa displaying key modern morphologies by 315 ka are claimed as the earliest Homo sapiens. Evolutionary relationships among East Asian hominins appear complex due to a growing fossil record of late Middle Pleistocene hominins from the region, reflecting mosaic morphologies that contribute to a lack of consensus on when and how the transition to modern humans transpired. Newly discovered 300 ka hominin fossils from Hualongdong, China, provide further evidence to clarify these relationships in the region. In this study, facial morphology of the juvenile par

Does Orthognathic Surgery Cause or Cure Temporomandibular Disorders? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE: There is still controversy about whether orthognathic surgery negatively or positively affects temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). The purpose of this study was to determine whether orthognathic surgery has a beneficial or deleterious effect on pre-existing TMDs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We searched 3 major databases to locate all pertinent articles published from 1980 to March 2016. All subjects in the various studies were stratified a p

Evaluation of Soft Tissue Changes Around the Lips After Mandibular Setback Surgery With Minimal Orthodontics Using Three-Dimensional Stereophotogrammetry.

PURPOSE: Most reports on the surgery-first approach in skeletal Class III malocclusion have focused on the skeletal changes. The present study evaluated the soft tissue changes around the lips over time after mandibular setback surgery (MS) with minimal orthodontics (MO) using 3-dimensional (3D) stereophotogrammetry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of patients with mandibular prognathism who had undergone MS-MO. Lateral cephalograms and 3D photographs were taken before (T0) and 1 (T1) and 6 months (T2) after surgery and were superimposed. A paired t test, independent

Correlation between the frequency of eruption disorders for first permanent molars and the occurrence of malocclusions in early mixed dentition.

OBJECTIVE: We analyzed the incidence of eruption disorders in 6-year molars during the first phase of mixed dentition, and then determined the risks for later dental arch development according to specific combinations of orthodontic malocclusions. We, thus, aimed to derive potential conclusions for preventative orthodontics. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 8,041 kindergarten and school children with early mixed dentition were randomly selected and clinically examined. Examinations were performed in two consecutive years during the standard dental screening that school chi

An evaluation of non-metric cranial traits used to estimate ancestry in a South African sample.

Establishing ancestry from a skeleton for forensic purposes has been shown to be difficult. The purpose of this paper is to address the application of thirteen non-metric traits to estimate ancestry in three South African groups, namely White, Black and "Coloured". In doing so, the frequency distribution of thirteen non-metric traits among South Africans are presented; the relationship of these non-metric traits with ancestry, sex, age at death are evaluated; and Kappa statistics are utilized to assess the inter and intra-rater reliability. Crania of 520 known individuals were obtained from fo
