Analysis of doping control test results in individual and team sports from 2003 to 2015.

BACKGROUND: Determining the prevalence of doping in sport might be useful for anti-doping authorities to gauge the effectiveness of anti-doping policies implemented to prevent positive attitudes toward doping. Using questionnaires and personal interviews, previous investigations have found that the prevalence of doping might be different among different sports disciplines; however, there is no sport-specific information about the proportion of adverse and atypical findings (AAF) in samples used for doping control. The aim of the present investigation was to assess the differences in the freque

Gambling among European professional athletes. Prevalence and associated factors.

In Europe, the prevalence of gambling disorders in the general population ranges from 0.15 to 6.6%. Professional athletes are known for having risk factors for addictive behaviors, such as young age or sensation seeking, though no study has yet tried to evaluate the prevalence of gambling and gambling disorders among this specific population. The goals of this study were to estimate the prevalence of gambling, problematic or not, among European professional athletes and to explore the factors that are associated with gambling practice and gambling problems in professional athletes. Relationship between Peak Eccentric Force during the Nordic Hamstring Exercise and One Repetition Maximum Deadlift Performance.

BACKGROUND: The Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) is useful for preventing hamstring strain injuries. However, its adoption rates in the sports field are currently low, necessitating a safe and efficient introduction. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: The purpose was to examine the relationship between the eccentric force during the NHE and the one repetition maximum of deadlift. It was hypothesized that the eccentric force during the NHE would be correlated with the one repetition maximum (1RM) of the deadlift. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Healthy student rugby players with no history of

An unusual case of childhood osteoarticular tuberculosis from the Árpádian Age cemetery of Győrszentiván-Révhegyi tag (Győr-Moson-Sopron county, Hungary).

Ancient human remains exhibiting bony changes consistent with osteoarticular tuberculosis (OATB) indicate that the disease has afflicted mankind for millennia. Nonetheless, not many pediatric OATB cases have been published in the paleopathological literature-from Hungary, only three cases have been described up to now. In our paper, we demonstrate a child (S0603) from the Árpádian Age cemetery of Győrszentiván-Révhegyi tag (northwestern Hungary), who represents a unique case of OATB regarding both the pattern and severity of the observed bony changes. During the macromorphological and radiolog

[Retrosternal luxation of the clavicle. Apropos of 4 cases surgically treated using a temporary screwed anterior plate and review of the literature].

The authors report 4 new cases of retrosternal dislocation of the clavicle operated by capsular and ligament restoration, and temporary stabilization by anterior plating. The 4 patients were men with a mean age of 17.5 years. The lesion was caused by a sports injury (football, rugby) in 3 out of 4 cases and was related to an indirect mechanism. Clinical examination allowed the diagnosis, was related to based on painful palpation of a dip over the joint, supported by radiology and computed tomography. CT did not reveal the epiphyseal separation present in two cases. Complications were frequent:

Relationships between functional performance, body composition, and biochemical markers of inflammation in young men who play team sports.

Movement quality and postural control are crucial for performance and injury prevention in team-sport athletes. Although FMS and YBT are commonly used, their ability to predict injury risk is limited when used alone. Therefore, integrating functional assessment with body composition and biochemical markers may provide a more comprehensive evaluation of athletes' functional status. The study aimed to investigate the relationships among functional performance, body composition, and chosen biochemical markers in young men's team-sport athletes. The study included 48 young Polish professional athl

Sensitivity of brain injury criteria to anthropometric scaling assumptions in instrumented mouthguard data.

Instrumented mouthguards (iMGs) enable in-game measurement of head acceleration events (HAEs) in contact sports, forming the basis for brain injury criteria (BICs). However, most commercial systems assume a 50th-percentile male head model for center-of-mass (COMh) transformations, which may bias risk estimates for athletes of different sex and body size. To quantify how anthropometric scaling assumptions influence BICs derived from iMG data, we analyzed 15,237 video-verified HAEs from 572 community rugby players (ages 10-38 years; 34-142 kg). Three scaling approaches were compared: (i) a one-s

Effects of unilateral and bilateral training on performance in team sports athletes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Team sports athletes rely heavily on unilateral movements, yet the comparative performance benefits of unilateral training (UT) versus bilateral training (BT) remain controversial. This meta-analysis systematically examined the effects of UT and BT on strength, jumping, sprinting, and agility in team sports, while considering sport type and training program as potential moderators. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and CNKI databases was conducted to identify controlled trials meeting the PICOS criteria. Primary outcomes were strength, jumping (countermovement ju

Sports after single-suture synostosis surgery: a survey of Synostosis Research Group members.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with a history of surgery for single-suture craniosynostosis (SSC) as an infant often wish to participate in sports later in childhood. However, there are no established guidelines from neurosurgeons and craniofacial surgeons to guide parents in which sports their child should or should not participate. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the attitudes and practice patterns of experienced neurosurgeons and craniofacial surgeons regarding the counseling of caregivers of these patients about sports participation. METHODS: A survey was administered to neurosurgeons and cr

Uncovering the hidden effects of repetitive subconcussive head impact exposure: A mega-analytic approach characterizing seasonal brain microstructural changes in contact and collision sports athletes.

Repetitive subconcussive head impacts (RSHI) are believed to induce sub-clinical brain injuries, potentially resulting in cumulative, long-term brain alterations. This study explores patterns of longitudinal brain white matter changes across sports with RSHI-exposure. A systematic literature search identified 22 datasets with longitudinal diffusion magnetic resonance imaging data. Four datasets were centrally pooled to perform uniform quality control and data preprocessing. A total of 131 non-concussed active athletes (American football, rugby, ice hockey; mean age: 20.06 ± 2.06 years) with ba

Risk Factors for Glenohumeral Internal Rotation Deficit in Adolescent Athletes: A Comparison of Overhead Sports and Non-overhead Sports.

Background A glenohumeral internal rotation deficit (GIRD) occurs in baseball players due to the repetitive pitching motion. However, few reports have addressed associations between GIRD and sports other than baseball. In this study, we investigated whether GIRD occurs in adolescent athletes playing overhead sports other than baseball, and also, the risk factors that cause GIRD in these sports were examined. Methods A total of 214 junior high school athletes who had undergone medical checks were evaluated. Seventy-five athletes playing sports requiring overhead motions were classified into the
