A DNA microarray analysis of chemokine and receptor genes in the rat dental follicle--role of secreted frizzled-related protein-1 in osteoclastogenesis.

The dental follicle, a loose connective tissue sac that surrounds the unerupted tooth, appears to regulate the osteoclastogenesis needed for eruption; i.e., bone resorption to form an eruption pathway. Thus, DNA microarray studies were conducted to determine which chemokines and their receptors were expressed chronologically in the dental follicle, chemokines that might attract osteoclast precursors. In the rat first mandibular molar, a major burst of osteoclastogenesis occurs at day 3 with a minor burst at day 10. The results of the microarray confirmed our previous studies showing the gene e

Does the presence of an unerupted lower third molar influence the risk of mandibular angle and condylar fractures?

It has been suggested that unerupted lower third molars (M3) increase the fragility of the mandibular angle and simultaneously decrease the risk of condylar fracture. However, it is unknown whether this applies regardless of the direction and point of impact of the traumatic force. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of an unerupted M3 on the fragility of the angle and condyle in terms of a force acting from different directions and affecting different regions of the mandible. Computed tomography scans of a human mandible and finite element methodology were used to obtain two t

Third molar extraction. Current trends.

Extraction of third molars is the operation most frequently performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The American National Institute of Health (1979) and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (1993) have organised consensus conferences to systematically analyse the scientific evidence and provide official guidelines for the management of third molars. However, some clinical aspects are still controversial: indications for preventive extraction, early extraction, prognosis of impacted teeth, continuous follow-up, relationship with anterior crowding and temporo-mandibu

Dental follicular tissue: misinterpretation as odontogenic tumors.

The dental follicle is radiographically and histologically observed in association with unerupted or impacted teeth. However, this normal tissue structure is often confused with odontogenic tumors by pathologists with limited experience in evaluating jaw lesions. This study was designed to evaluate the incidence and possible reasons for incorrect interpretation of dental follicles. From 1970 to 1988, 847 dental follicles and/or dental papillas from 663 patients were submitted to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) by medical pathologists seeking diagnostic consultation. Nearly 84% o

Dentigerous Cyst and Glandular Odontogenic Cyst: A Rare Combination of Coexisting Pathologies.

A dentigerous cyst (DC) is the most common developmental cystic lesion of the jaws. Histologically, these cysts derive from the odontogenic epithelium that includes the reduced enamel epithelium, epithelial cell rests of Serres, and epithelial cell rests of Malassez. Radiographically, DCs are usually presented as well-defined radiolucencies associated with the crown of an unerupted tooth at the level of the cementoenamel junction (CEJ). Glandular odontogenic cysts (GOCs) are classified under the same category as DCs. Radiographically, glandular odontogenic cysts (GOCs) may appear as unilocular

Two- versus three-dimensional imaging in subjects with unerupted maxillary canines.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether there is any difference in the diagnostic information provided by conventional two-dimensional (2D) images or by three-dimensional (3D) cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in subjects with unerupted maxillary canines. Twenty-seven patients (17 females and 10 males, mean age 11.8 years) undergoing orthodontic treatment with 39 impacted or retained maxillary canines were included. For each canine, two different digital image sets were obtained: (1) A 2D image set including a panoramic radiograph, a lateral cephalogram, and the available periapical r

International collaborative study on ghost cell odontogenic tumours: calcifying cystic odontogenic tumour, dentinogenic ghost cell tumour and ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Calcifying odontogenic cyst was described first by Gorlin et al. in 1962; since then several hundreds of cases had been reported. In 1981, Praetorius et al. proposed a widely used classification. Afterwards, several authors proposed different classifications and discussed its neoplastic potential. The 2005 WHO Classification of Odontogenic Tumours re-named this entity as calcifying cystic odontogenic tumour (CCOT) and defined the clinico-pathological features of the ghost cell odontogenic tumours, the CCOT, the dentinogenic ghost cell tumour (DGCT) and the ghost cell odontogenic ca

A familial case of popliteal pterygium syndrome.

Popliteal pterygium syndrome (PPS) is a rare malformation disorder characterized by autosomal dominant inheritance, highly variable expressivity and incomplete penetrance. The disorder is caused by the mutation of the IRF6 gene and the respective protein, which belongs to a family of nine transcription factors and is involved in the differentiation and proliferation of keratinocytes. Mutations in the IRF6 gene give rise to popliteal pterygium syndrome, Van Der Woude syndrome and nonsyndromic orofacial clefts. The anomalies from which affected patients suffer can be subdivided into alterations

Accuracy of radiographic detection of residual caries in connection with tunnel restorations.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of radiographic examination for the detection of residual caries after tunnel preparation and filling with glass ionomer cement. Further, two different radiographic modalities were compared. Forty-five extracted human premolars and molars with clinical signs of approximal caries were selected for the study. The teeth were radiographed in order to identify surfaces with dentinal lesions suitable for tunnel preparation. Seventeen of the teeth had lesions that were as a minimum through the enamel and as a maximum into the outer half of

Orthodontic and nonorthodontic root resorption: their impact on clinical dental practice.

Occasionally, general dentists are challenged with providing restorative treatment for a postorthodontic patient who has had moderate to severe root resorption. When this happens, a number of questions about the cause of such resorption and the appropriate treatment arise in the dentist's mind. This article will describe the orthodontic and restorative management of three patients with severe maxillary incisor root resorption, provide a thorough discussion of the currently available literature on the topic of root resorption, and answer clinical questions regarding this relatively infrequent b

Analysis of mast cells in dental follicle and dentigerous cyst: A histopathological study.

INTRODUCTION: Mast cells are large granular cells that arise from multipotent CD 34+ precursors in the bone marrow normally distributed throughout the connective tissues. Following activation of immunologic or nonimmunologic stimuli, mast cells release secretory granules which give the characteristic metachromatic appearance with toluidine blue stain. Release of numerous mediators on degranulation of mast cells plays an important role in the pathogenesis of odontogenic cysts. CONTEXT: Odontogenic cysts, such as dentigerous cysts, arise due to the accumulation of fluid between the crown of an

Immunohistochemical study on antigen-presenting cells in healthy and carious human teeth.

Class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigen-presenting cells are associated with the early phase of the immune response. We have studied the distribution of class II-expressing cells in developing, healthy and carious human teeth to clarify, when human pulp acquires an immunologic defense potential and how this reacts to dental caries. Antigen-expressing cells were identified immunohistochemically with the following monoclonal antibodies: HLA-DR - for dendritic cells and CD68 - for macrophages. In the pulp of unerupted developing teeth, HLA-DR-positive cells were distributed mainly
