N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and non-NMDA receptor antagonists suppress the superior sagittal sinus-evoked activity of C1 spinal neurons responding to tooth pulp electrical stimulation in rats.

The aim of the present study was to determine whether there is a convergence of inputs from tooth pulp (TP) and the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) on rat C1 spinal neurons, and to examine the effects of iontophoretically applied N-methyl-D: -aspartate (NMDA) and non-NMDA receptor antagonists on the SSS-evoked activity of C1 neurons. Extracellular single unit-recordings were made from 20 C1 units responding to TP electrical stimulation with a constant temporal relationship to a digastric electromyogram signal, using a multibarrel electrode in pentobarbital-anesthetized rats. Ninety percent of C1

Decision making for the patient who presents with acute dental pain.

Patients who require dental emergency care for pain or trauma may not be able to see a dental practitioner for treatment. The patients often seek care in alternative medical facilities when the symptoms are too severe to be managed by over-the-counter medications. Nurses, physicians, and allied medical staff may be required to triage these patients and provide palliative treatment until the patient is able to seek definitive dental treatment. By using criteria to assess the etiology of the dental pain and implementing possible alternative treatments, these patients can receive palliative care

Oral-health-related quality of life among undergraduate dental students with Tooth Wear.

BACKGROUND: Tooth Wear results from multiple mechanisms, including erosion (chemical loss), attrition (tooth-to-tooth contact), and abrasion (mechanical wear), represent an emerging concern among young individuals (Li MHM, Bernabé E. J Dent. 55:48-53, 2016). The severity of Tooth Wear can be measured using the Tooth Wear Index, which scores each tooth surface from 0 to 4. With time this mechanism can proceed to visible lesions on the tooth surface; these lesions may cause dysfunction, increase sensitivity, and disfigure facial appearance. Understanding the role of target population, behavioral

Conditional TNF-α Overexpression in the Tooth and Alveolar Bone Results in Painful Pulpitis and Osteitis.

Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) is a proalgesic cytokine that is commonly expressed following tissue injury. TNF-α expression not only promotes inflammation but can also lead to pain hypersensitivity in nociceptors. With the established link between TNF-α and inflammatory pain, we identified its increased expression in the teeth of patients affected with caries and pulpitis. We generated a transgenic mouse model (TNF-α(glo)) that could be used to conditionally overexpress TNF-α. These mice were bred with a dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1)-Cre line for overexpression of TNF-α in both the tooth pu

Self-report of alcohol use for pain in a multi-ethnic community sample.

UNLABELLED: This study examined the occurrence of alcohol use to manage pain in community-dwelling adults with tooth pain, jaw joint/face pain, and arthritis. Race/ethnicity, sex, and age were examined to determine their associations with alcohol use for pain. Community-dwelling adults from South Florida with tooth pain (n = 1,767), jaw joint/face pain (n = 1,199), or arthritis pain (n = 1,355) completed a structured telephone interview. Logistic regression models indicted that, similar to population rates, nonHispanic whites and males were the most likely to use alcohol to manage pain. In add

Prevalence of Depression in Patients with Subjective Chronic Tinnitus in Rural Population of Puducherry: An Observational Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Recent evidence indicates that the oral health for children in Timor-Leste is deteriorating, with 40% of school children experiencing toothache during 2014. Timorese have easy access to sugar, poor food security and lack of water fluoridation, all of which exacerbate the risk of dental caries. A lack of quality epidemiological data is available to confirm anecdotal information of high caries rates in rural and remote Timor-Leste. Such data are required to inform oral health issues and health policy at both the local and national levels. This study investigated the caries status a
