Intestinal polyparasitism in a rural Kenyan community.

BACKGROUND: Polyparasitism seems to be a common feature in human populations in sub-Saharan Africa. However, very little is known about its epidemiological significance, its long term impact on human health or the types of interactions that occur between the different parasite species involved. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and co-occurrence of intestinal parasites in a rural community in the Kibwezi, Makueni district, Kenya. DESIGN: A cross sectional study. SETTING: Kiteng'ei village, Kibwezi, Makueni district, between May and September 2006. SUBJECTS: One thousand and forty fiv

Paradoxical helminthiasis and giardiasis in Cape Town, South Africa: epidemiology and control.

BACKGROUND: South Africa has endorsed a World Health Assembly (WHA) resolution calling for control of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs). In Cape Town, services and housing that exist in old-established suburbs should minimise the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections, even when residents are poor. Where families live in shacks in densely-populated areas without effective sanitation, more than 90% of children can be infected by STHs. The humoral immune response to worms theoretically favours infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and HIV. OBJECTIVES: Obtain estimates of gender-, age-,

Wastewater-based epidemiological study on helminth egg detection in untreated sewage sludge from Brazilian regions with unequal income.

BACKGROUND: Helminthiases are neglected diseases that affect billions of people worldwide, particularly those with inadequate sanitation, poor hygiene practices, and limited access to clean water. Due to frequent underreporting, wastewater-based epidemiology has emerged as a valuable tool for monitoring parasitic infections at population-level. This study aimed to detect and quantify helminth eggs in untreated sewage sludge from eight wastewater treatment plants located in different Brazilian socioeconomic regions. METHODS: The study was conducted from June 2021 to December 2023 in Goiás and

Prevalence and associated factors of intestinal parasitic infections in the Badi indigenous communities of Western Nepal.

Despite years of a national deworming campaign, the incidence of intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) remains relatively high among certain ethnic groups, with lifestyle factors distinct from those of the general population. Despite existing studies on the prevalence of IPIs, there is limited research exploring the contextual associated factors within the Badi Indigenous community. Our objective in this study was to assess the prevalence of IPIs in the indigenous Badi community of Gurbhakot Municipality, Surkhet, Nepal, considering socioeconomic, lifestyle, and behavioral factors. A total of

Shift in parasitic infections during the Corona pandemic: a hospital-based retrospective study.

The Corona pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2) calls on the Saudi government to take action to control the infection. The government closed borders, prohibited travel, limited outdoor movements, and told primary and secondary care facilities to reduce all regular non-urgent health services. It is not known whether these measures have impacted the prevalence of parasitic intestinal infections. This study has therefore been carried out to investigate this issue. Dataset of 217 stool samples submitted to the King Faisal Medical Complex (KFMC) Microbi

Prevalence and Determinants of Intestinal Parasitic Infections among Pregnant Women Receiving Antenatal Care in Kasoa Polyclinic, Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections affect pregnant women worldwide. The infection has been implicated in causing life-threatening conditions in both gravid women and their developing foetus. Sub-Saharan Africa is known to harbor the greatest proportion of intestinal parasitic infections largely due to socioeconomic and environmental factors. In Kasoa, Southern Ghana, there is paucity of data on the prevalence and associated factors of intestinal parasitic infections among pregnant women. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection

Resolution of childhood recurrent corneal phlyctenulosis following eradication of an intestinal parasite.

Phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis is a nodular foreign antigen delayed hypersensitivity reaction typically due to staphylococcal protein (but potentially secondary to antigen from a variety of different organisms, eg, mycobacteria and intestinal worms).(1-4) Conjunctival phlyctens are usually mild and transient, but corneal phlyctens can be severe and recurrent.(3,4) The subject of this report is a severe recurrent unilateral corneal case in a child whose stool was positive for Hymenolepsis nana. Following treatment for the intestinal parasite, the child no longer suffered from recurrent ocula

[Human intestinal parasites in Subsaharan Africa. II. Sao Tomé and Principe].

In 1983 the authors carried out a survey in the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Principe, analysing 1050 specimens of stools collected among the population from apparently healthy subjects chosen at random and in a number proportional to the distribution of the population in the regions of the country (about 1% of the population was examined). The examined subjects were divided into 3 age groups (0-3, 4-12, more than 12 years old), to have homogeneous groups in relation principally to modalities of life and nutritional patterns. There were 488 male subjects and 562 females. The survey was

Application of PathoChip to urine-derived nucleic acids for broad microbial profiling in men with suspected prostate cancer: setup of a methodological workflow and pilot feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Urine-based liquid biopsy is an attractive non-invasive source of prostate cancer (PCa) biomarkers, but urinary microbiome studies have mainly relied on 16S rRNA sequencing or shotgun metagenomics. This pilot study optimized and evaluated a practical workflow using PathoChip - a broad-spectrum microarray designed to detect bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic signatures - for microbial profiling of urine sediments from men with suspected PCa, an application not previously established. METHODS: First-morning urine was collected without prostatic massage from 35 men scheduled for

Parasitic contamination in green vegetables from open markets in Gampaha District, Sri Lanka: Implications for human health.

Intestinal parasitic infections in Sri Lanka have received little attention due to their perceived low prevalence. Consuming raw vegetables without proper washing is one of the main ways to transmit intestinal parasitic infections. Therefore, this study investigated the contamination of parasites in vegetables. A cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2023 to January 2024 at fifty selected open markets in ten cities (Ragama, Miriswatta, Kirillawala, Kadawatha, Balummahara, Kiribathgoda, Peliyagoda, Weliweriya, Imbulgoda and Gampaha) in Gampaha District, Sri Lanka. Four vegetable types

Incidence of Rodentolepis nana infection within people seeking asylum and refugees attending health screening at an integrated refugee health service.

BACKGROUND: Rodentolepis (Hymenolepis) nana (R. nana) is the most common cestode to infect humans, and whilst most infections are asymptomatic, those with a high burden of infection can present with abdominal pain, diarrhoea, or growth stunting. The Respond service, London, offers screening and treatment for common infections to people seeking asylum and refugees (PSAR), including testing for gastrointestinal parasites such as R. nana. METHODS: We present a retrospective observational analysis of all positive R. nana results in patients screened by the Respond service between April 2016 and J
