Compositional Analysis of High-TAN Sudanese Crude Oil Using High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry and Study of the Effect of Temperature and Catalyst on Acidic Composition.

Sudanese Fula crude oil, from the western region, is considered highly viscous and acidic and contains high amounts of heteroatoms (N and O) but a low sulfur content. This work presents an original and comprehensive analysis of its molecular composition in addition to an investigation of the effect of temperature and catalyst on the treatment of the acid fraction. The analysis was performed using a high-resolution Fourier transform mass spectrometer and Orbitrap-Elite with different ionization methods. The results reveal that the Fula crude oil contains a high abundance of nitrogen composition

[Chronopharmacology. Time of day variations in the action of bupivacaine are not manifested in nerves].

UNLABELLED: To test the hypothesis that the efficacy of local anaesthetics to block nerve conduction is related the time of day (TOD) of drug application, we retrospectively analysed data from previous experiments on tachyphylaxis. During the course of these experiments, as a measure of drug efficacy we determined the minimal blocking concentration (c(m)) of bupivacaine in rabbit aortic nerves at several TODs. The special in situ preparation used permitted study of local anaesthetic pharmacodynamics without the influence of pharmacokinetics, making it possible to investigate the chronopharmaco

Analysis of temperature distributions of interstitial hyperthermia using a hot water system.

PURPOSE: Interstitial hyperthermia is being increasingly used as an adjunct to brachytherapy in the treatment of implantable tumors. Of the several interstitial hyperthermia systems available, perhaps the simplest to use are the circulating hot water systems. An analysis of the thermal distributions obtained during our initial experience with interstitial hyperthermia using steel needles and the KHS-9 hot water system was therefore undertaken. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between September 1988 and June 1991, 23 patients were treated with interstitial Iridium-192 high dose-rate brachytherapy immedi

Catalytic N-H Bond Formation Promoted by a Ruthenium Hydride Complex Bearing a Redox-Active Pyrimidine-Imine Ligand.

The synthesis of a piano-stool ruthenium hydride, [(η5-C5Me5)Ru(PmIm)H] (PmIm = (N-(1,3,5-trimethylphenyl)-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)ethan-1-imine), for the dual purpose of catalytic dihydrogen activation and subsequent hydrogen atom transfer for the formation of weak chemical bonds is described. The introduction of a neutral, potentially redox-active PmIm supporting ligand was designed to eliminate the possibility of deleterious C(sp2)-H reductive coupling and elimination that has been identified as a deactivation pathway with related rhodium and iridium catalysts. Treatment of [(η5-C5Me5)RuCl2]n wit

Selection of brachytherapy applicators based on tumor size and shape for cervical cancer: simulation analysis of pear-shaped isodose dimensions.

The purpose of study is to measure Point A pear-shaped isodose dimensions of the conventional intracavitary brachytherapy with various sizes of colpostats and analyze which size of tumor is the optimal for 3-D interstitial brachytherapy. CT simulation was performed with Fletcher type applicator using various sizes of colpostats (2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 cm diameter). The Manchester standard loading (dwell time) system was used to generate pear-shaped isodose envelopes with high-dose rate iridium-192 according to the colpostat sizes. The size of the pear-shaped envelope was measured at 5 different lev

Intraoperative versus interstitial radiotherapy: a comparison of morbidity in the head and neck.

Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) and interstitial radiotherapy (brachytherapy) are highly effective adjunctive treatments for head and neck cancer. The radiotolerance of the carotid artery, pharynx, and mandible to therapeutic doses of these modalities, however, has not been clearly established. To investigate the effects of IORT and interstitial iridium 192 (192Ir) on these structures in the canine, both sides of the neck of 12 mongrel dogs were operated on to expose 4-cm segments of the common carotid artery, pharynx, and mandible. One side of the neck was irradiated in each animal wi

The superoxide reductase from the early diverging eukaryote Giardia intestinalis.

Unlike superoxide dismutases (SODs), superoxide reductases (SORs) eliminate superoxide anion (O(2)(•-)) not through its dismutation, but via reduction to hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) in the presence of an electron donor. The microaerobic protist Giardia intestinalis, responsible for a common intestinal disease in humans, though lacking SOD and other canonical reactive oxygen species-detoxifying systems, is among the very few eukaryotes encoding a SOR yet identified. In this study, the recombinant SOR from Giardia (SOR(Gi)) was purified and characterized by pulse radiolysis and stopped-flow spe

Biliary tree malignancies: the University of Minnesota experience.

Because of its slow-growing natural history, most patients with extrahepatic biliary tree malignancies present with inoperable disease. For the minority of patients with operable disease, surgical resection remains the treatment of choice and offers the patient the best chance for long-term local control. The role of chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the management of these patients in the definitive, adjuvant, and palliative setting is expanding, although unsettled. Response rates with chemotherapy have been low and will most likely find a place in a combined multimodality setting. Radiotherap

Comparison between two ocular cleansing modalities in a population of newborns admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with clinical signs of conjunctivitis: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal conjunctivitis is frequent and could benefit from daily cleansing with saline. Anyway super infections can occur and therefore antibiotics are frequently needed. Recently alternative therapies (e.g. Echinacea angustifolia) are used for neonatal conjunctivitis to try to reduce antibiotics therapy. The aim of the study was to verify if the use of gauze containing Echinacea angustifolia compared to standard sodium-chloride at the onset of conjunctivitis symptoms is effective in reducing the clinical symptoms and the risk for superinfections. METHODS: The study was randomized

High dose rate intraluminal radiotherapy for carcinoma of the bronchus: outcome of treatment of 406 patients.

In April 1988 the Christie Hospital started using the microSelectron-HDR machine to deliver intraluminal radiotherapy (ILT) to inoperable bronchial carcinomas causing symptoms due to endobronchial disease. Results of treatment in the first 406 patients with primary non-small-cell carcinoma are presented. Three main categories of patient were defined. Category 1 consisted of 324 patients (79.8%) who were previously unirradiated and received a single fraction of ILT as their primary treatment, mostly to a dose of 1500 cGy (76%) or 2000 cGy (23%) at 1 cm from the centre of the iridium-192 treatme

Targeted chemo-photodynamic therapy in pancreatic cancer: influence of Ir(III)-complex and ion chelating N^N-ancillary ligand on cell death mechanism.

Ir(III)-based metallo-anticancer complexes offer promising therapeutic strategies with their efficacy fine-tuned through structural modifications, leveraging multitargeted mechanisms of action to reduce resistance compared to traditional chemotherapeutics. Herein, we report a photoactive Ir(III)-complex [Ir-biotin] designed with an ion-chelating ancillary ligand to disrupt copper homeostasis and simultaneously induce oxidative stress, aiming to overcome chemotherapeutic drug-resistance in pancreatic cancer. The complex features a nonsymmetrical polytopic ligand covalently linked to phenanthrol

Recent Advances in the Biological Investigation of Organometallic Platinum-Group Metal (Ir, Ru, Rh, Os, Pd, Pt) Complexes as Antimalarial Agents.

In the face of the recent pandemic and emergence of infectious diseases of viral origin, research on parasitic diseases such as malaria continues to remain critical and innovative methods are required to target the rising widespread resistance that renders conventional therapies unusable. The prolific use of auxiliary metallo-fragments has augmented the search for novel drug regimens in an attempt to combat rising resistance. The development of organometallic compounds (those containing metal-carbon bonds) as antimalarial drugs has been exemplified by the clinical development of ferroquine in

Thiabendazole-based Rh(III) and Ir(III) biscyclometallated complexes with mitochondria-targeted anticancer activity and metal-sensitive photodynamic activity.

Two pairs of Rh(III) and Ir(III) biscyclometallated complexes with thiabendazole (L1), named [Ir-a]Cl and [Rh-a]Cl, and N-benzyl-thiabendazole (L2), named [Ir-b]Cl and [Rh-b]Cl, have been designed and synthesized to explore the photophysical and biological effects that arise from changing both the metal center and the ancillary ligand. In the dark, the four metal complexes exhibit greater cytotoxicity than cisplatin against human colon (SW480) and human lung (A549) adenocarcinoma cell lines. Moreover, the pair of complexes bearing the ligand L2 is markedly more cytotoxic and present higher upt

High-dose-rate prostate brachytherapy: an excellent accelerated-hypofractionated treatment for favorable prostate cancer.

PURPOSE: The radiobiology of prostate cancer appears to favor large fractions. Accelerated hypofractionation treatments may therefore be used to improve the therapeutic ratio, particularly when the doses to rectum and bladder are kept below the prostate dose. The 5-year experience at William Beaumont Hospital (WBH) and the California Endocurietherapy Center (CET) with accelerated-hypofractionated high-dose-rate (HDR) monotherapy in favorable prostate cancer is presented.
