Epidemiology of Bladder Cancer in the Arab World: 2019 Global Burden of Disease Data.

BackgroundUrinary bladder cancer (UBC) has unique epidemiology. It is well known that some Arab countries have higher incidence of UBC due to certain risk factors, including schistosomiasis and smoking.MethodsWe systematically reviewed the Global Burden of Disease study (GBD) database for the year 2019. We queried GBD study database using results tool for UBC in the 22 Arab countries and compared the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), death rate (ASDR), mortality-to-incidence ratio (MIR) and Disability-Adjusted Life Years (ASDALYs) in Arab countries with global values.ResultsThe Arab popu

Ambient Air Quality Standards and Policies in Eastern Mediterranean Countries: A Review.

Objectives: National ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) are critical tools for controlling air pollution and protecting public health. We designed this study to 1) gather the NAAQS for six classical air pollutants: PM2.5, PM10, O3, NO2, SO2, and CO in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) countries, 2) compare those with the updated World Health Organizations Air Quality Guidelines (WHO AQGs 2021), 3) estimate the potential health benefits of achieving annual PM2.5 NAAQS and WHO AQGs per country, and 4) gather the information on air quality policies and action plans in the EMR countries. Estimated incidence, prevalence, mortality, and registration of childhood cancer (ages 0-14 years) in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean region: an analysis of GLOBOCAN 2020 data.

BACKGROUND: There is little evidence about childhood cancer burden in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean region (EMR). We aimed to provide an estimate of childhood cancer burden in the EMR, examine the connection between age-standardised mortality rate and level of income (gross domestic product [GDP] per capita), and reflect on the current status of childhood cancer registration in the EMR. METHODS: Using the GLOBOCAN 2020 data from the Cancer Surveillance Unit of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, we extracted data for childhood cancer (at ages 0-14 years) incidence, prevalence, an

Sexual Health Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ob-Gyn) Residencies-A Resident Physician Survey.

BACKGROUND: Many women will experience a sexual health concern and present to their Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ob-Gyn) care provider, yet a large portion of graduating Ob-Gyn resident physicians in the United States may not feel comfortable helping patients with some sexual health issues. AIM: To perform a cross-sectional study of U.S. Ob-Gyn resident physicians that assesses sexual health education didactic sessions and comfort level with sexual health clinical vignettes. METHODS: A 32-item anonymous survey was sent to all 4,065 Ob-Gyn residents on June 7, 2016. Respondents voluntarily comp

Lymphatic filariasis in the Eastern Mediterranean Region: current status and prospects for elimination.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) represents a major public health problem in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The disease is endemic or suspected in several countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Recent advances in diagnosis and therapy led the World Health Assembly to pass a resolution in 1997 calling for "the elimination of lymphatic filariasis as a public health problem." The elimination strategy is based on rounds of mass drug administration of an annual single-dose of combined drug regimens for 5-6 consecutive years. Subsequent steps included formation of a Regional Program

Malaria, intestinal parasites, and schistosomiasis among Barawan Somali refugees resettling to the United States: a strategy to reduce morbidity and decrease the risk of imported infections.

In 1997, enhanced health assessments were performed for 390 (10%) of approximately 4,000 Barawan refugees resettling to the United States. Of the refugees who received enhanced assessments, 26 (7%) had malaria parasitemia and 128 (38%) had intestinal parasites, while only 2 (2%) had Schistosoma haematobium eggs in the urine. Mass therapy for malaria (a single oral dose of 25 mg/kg of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine) was given to all Barawan refugees 1-2 days before resettlement. Refugees >2 years of age and nonpregnant women received a single oral dose of 600 mg albendazole for intestinal parasite t

[Hypertension in the Negro patient].

Essential hypertension appears to be more prevalent among blacks than among whites and has an earlier onset in blacks. Many data in this field come from studies in the African-American population. Hypertension-related complications, e.g. ischaemic heart disease, (end stage) renal failure and cerebrovascular disease, are encountered more often among blacks and frequently run a more severe course. Factors that might explain the racial difference in prevalence of hypertension and hypertensive complications include both genetic and environmental variables. Hypertension in blacks is characterized b

Comparing severe maternal morbidity and neonatal outcomes between Somali and non-Somali black birthing cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Black birthing individuals experience worse perinatal outcomes compared to White counterparts, yet within-group differences among Black populations remain understudied. The U.S. Black population is heterogeneous, encompassing long-established U.S.-born communities and immigrants from across the African diaspora, whose health profiles may differ. Somali immigrants represent the largest African-born population in many U.S. communities and face documented challenges including cultural adaptation and language barriers. However, severe maternal morbidity (SMM) has not been specifically

Asthma and the immune response to MMR vaccine viruses in Somali immigrant children: a cross-sectional retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: According to the 'hygiene hypothesis', an increase in microbial exposure in childhood leads to a T-helper cell 1 (Th1) predominant immune response and protection against asthma and atopic conditions. AIMS: To assess the prevalence of asthma and other atopic conditions in Somali immigrants and to determine the humoral immune response to the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine viruses in Somali immigrants with asthma. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in Olmsted County, Minnesota. Study subjects were Somali immigrants who were born and lived in Africa during

Sero-prevalence of brucellosis, Q-fever and Rift Valley fever in humans and livestock in Somali Region, Ethiopia.

Information on zoonotic diseases in humans and livestock are limited in pastoral/agro-pastoral communities in Ethiopia. A multi-stage cross sectional cluster design study was implemented with the aim to establish the seroprevalence of zoonotic diseases including brucellosis, Q-fever and Rift Valley fever (RVF) in humans and livestock in Adadle Woreda of the Somali Region, Ethiopia. Blood samples were collected from humans and livestock and tested by relevant serological tests. For brucellosis, Rose Bengal test (RBT) and indirect ELISA was used for screening and confirmatory diagnosis respectiv

A focus group study of healthy eating knowledge, practices, and barriers among adult and adolescent immigrants and refugees in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Immigrants and refugees to the United States exhibit lower dietary quality than the general population, but reasons for this disparity are poorly understood. In this study, we describe the meanings of food, health and wellbeing through the reported dietary preferences, beliefs, and practices of adults and adolescents from four immigrant and refugee communities in the Midwestern United States. METHODS: Using a community based participatory research approach, we conducted a qualitative research study with 16 audio-recorded focus groups with adults and adolescents who self-identified

Cholera outbreaks in Africa.

During the current seventh cholera pandemic, Africa bore the major brunt of global disease burden. More than 40 years after its resurgence in Africa in 1970, cholera remains a grave public health problem, characterized by large disease burden, frequent outbreaks, persistent endemicity, and high CFRs, particularly in the region of the central African Great Lakes which might act as reservoirs for cholera. There, cases occur year round with a rise in incidence during the rainy season. Elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa, cholera occurs mostly in outbreaks of varying size with a constant threat of wid

"We Feel Alone and Not Listened To": Parents' Perspectives on Pediatric Serious Illness Care in Somali, Hmong, and Latin American Communities.

PURPOSE: The experience of ethnically diverse parents of children with serious illness in the US health care system has not been well studied. Listening to families from these communities about their experiences could identify modifiable barriers to quality pediatric serious illness care and facilitate the development of potential improvements. Our aim was to explore parents' perspectives of their children's health care for serious illness from Somali, Hmong, and Latin-American communities in Minnesota. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study with focus groups and individual interviews usin

The heterozygous 20210 G/A prothrombin genotype is associated with early venous thrombosis in inherited thrombophilias and is not increased in frequency in artery disease.

A genetic variation in the 3'-untranslated region of the prothrombin mRNA (20210 G/A) has recently been reported to be associated with elevated plasma prothrombin levels and with an increased incidence of venous thrombosis. We determined the frequency of this mutation, the detection of which was improved by allele-specific amplification of exon 14 and by denaturing gradients (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis), in cohorts of patients affected by venous thrombosis (n = 132) or by coronary or cerebrovascular diseases (n = 195) and in normal subjects from various populations. An overlapping
