Distinct mechanisms for expression of Fos-like immunoreactivity and synaptic potentiation in telencephalic hyperstriatum of the quail chick.

In the intermediate and medial hyperstriatum ventrale (IMHV), a telencephalic region essentially involved in the initial processes of early learning tasks in poultry chicks, induction of an immediate early gene c-fos correlates significantly with the degree of learning (K.V. Primary cultures of astrocytes from different brain areas of newborn rats and effects of basic fibroblast growth factor.

The effects of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on the morphology and the expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and glutamine synthetase (GS) in cultured astrocytes prepared from various areas of newborn rat brain was studied. The brain was dissected in two ways, either the telencephalon (area A) and the diencephalon (area B) were dissected out of the brain (without olfactory bulbs, mesencephalon and cerebellum) or the brain was cut transversely into 3 parts (areas 1, 2 and 3). Area 1 (the anterior part) included the frontal cortex, the olfactory nuclei, the neostriatum, th

Pretreatment intracerebral and peripheral blood immune responses in Vietnamese adults with tuberculous meningitis: diagnostic value and relationship to disease severity and outcome.

Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is the most devastating form of tuberculosis. Both intracerebral and peripheral blood immune responses may be relevant to pathogenesis, diagnosis, and outcome. In this study, the relationship between pretreatment host response, disease phenotype, and outcome in Vietnamese adults with TBM was examined. Before treatment, peripheral blood IFN-gamma ELISPOT responses to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis Ags ESAT-6, CFP-10, and purified protein derivative (PPD) were a poor diagnostic predictor of TBM. Cerebrospinal fluid IL-6 concentrations at presentation were independent

The turtle thalamic anterior entopeduncular nucleus shares connectional and neurochemical characteristics with the mammalian thalamic reticular nucleus.

Neurochemical and key connectional characteristics of the anterior entopeduncular nucleus (Enta) of the turtle (Testudo horsfieldi) were studied by axonal tracing techniques and immunohistochemistry of parvalbumin, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD). We showed that the Enta, which is located within the dorsal peduncle of the lateral forebrain bundle (Pedd), has roughly topographically organized reciprocal connections with the dorsal thalamic visual nuclei, the nucleus rotundus (Rot) and dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (GLd). The Enta receives projections fro

Direct detection of leptospiral material in human postmortem samples.

Leptospiral culture, direct immunofluorescence, and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used to detect leptospiral material in postmortem specimens collected from eight patients who died of leptospirosis. Diagnosis of leptospiral infection was based on clinical summary (premortem) and confirmed by serological analysis and/or culture of leptospires. Leptospiral culture was the least sensitive technique, yielding two isolates (3%) from 65 samples. Both isolates were from the aqueous humour and cerebrospinal fluid of the same patient. Direct immunofluorescence was of intermediate sensitivity

Development of the chick olfactory nerve.

Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) is produced and secreted by neurons dispersed throughout the septal-preoptic and anterior hypothalamic areas in adult birds and mammals. These neurons, essential for a functional brain-pituitary-gonadal axis, differentiate in the olfactory placode, the superior aspect of which forms the olfactory epithelium. To reach their final placement within the brain, GnRH neurons migrate out of the epithelium and along the olfactory nerve to the CNS. This nerve is essential for the entrance of GnRH neurons into the CNS. Due to the importance of the nerve for the prop

Morphology of the brain and sense organs in the snailfish Paraliparis devriesi: neural convergence and sensory compensation on the Antarctic shelf.

The Antarctic snailfish Paraliparis devriesi (Liparidae) is an epibenthic species, inhabiting depths of 500-650 m in McMurdo Sound. Liparids are the most speciose fish family in the Antarctic Region. We examine the gross morphology and histology of the sense organs and brain of P. devriesi and provide a phyletic perspective by comparing this morphology to that of four scorpaeniforms and of sympatric perciform notothenioids. The brain has numerous derived features, including well-developed olfactory lamellae with thick epithelia, large olfactory nerves and bulbs, and large telencephalic lobes.

The organization of neural inputs to the medial preoptic nucleus of the rat.

There is general agreement that the medial preoptic nucleus (MPN) receives projections from widespread regions of the brain, although there are significant discrepancies in the literature with regard to certain specific inputs. Therefore, we have reexamined the inputs to this nucleus with both retrograde and anterograde axonal transport techniques. First, injections of the retrograde tracers true blue, SITS, or wheat germ agglutinin were made into the region of the MPN and the distribution of retrogradely labeled cells was charted. Then, autoradiographic material was used to confirm the result

Agenesis of the putamen and globus pallidus caused by recessive mutations in the homeobox gene GSX2.

Basal ganglia are subcortical grey nuclei that play essential roles in controlling voluntary movements, cognition and emotion. While basal ganglia dysfunction is observed in many neurodegenerative or metabolic disorders, congenital malformations are rare. In particular, dysplastic basal ganglia are part of the malformative spectrum of tubulinopathies and X-linked lissencephaly with abnormal genitalia, but neurodevelopmental syndromes characterized by basal ganglia agenesis are not known to date. We ascertained two unrelated children (both female) presenting with spastic tetraparesis, severe ge

A mother and a child with maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD) showing atrophy of the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

A mother and a child with maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD) showing atrophy of the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were reported. The proband had slowly progressive cerebellar ataxia and her son had depression. Mitochondrial DNA purified from their leucocytes had the heteroplasmic point mutation at position 3243 (A-->G). Involvement of the central nervous system should be considered in MIDD as well as in other mitochondrial diseases.

An optimized triphenyltetrazolium chloride method for identification of cerebral infarcts.

2,3,5-Triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining is a convenient procedure for detection of brain infarcts but no standardized procedure is available. We report here an optimized and economic procedure of staining with TTC. Rats were subjected to reversible middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion (2-h ischemia and 24-h reperfusion). At the end of reperfusion, brain was isolated and sliced rostro-caudally into serial 2-mm-thick slices. Sets of three serial slices from each brain were incubated for 30 min at 37 degrees C in three different concentrations of TTC-the first slice of the set in 1%,

Diversification of brain and sense organ morphology in Antarctic dragonfishes (Perciformes: Notothenioidei: Bathydraconidae).

In the subzero shelf waters of Antarctica, fishes of the perciform suborder Notothenioidei dominate the fish fauna and constitute an adaptive radiation and a species flock. The 16 species of dragonfishes of the family Bathydraconidae live from surface waters to nearly 3,000 m and have the greatest overall depth range among notothenioid families. We examined the anatomy and histology of the brain, retina, and cephalic lateral line system of nine bathydraconid species representing 8 of the 11 known genera. We evaluate these data against a cladogram identifying three clades in the family. We prov

The Edinger-Westphal nucleus: sources of input influencing accommodation, pupilloconstriction, and choroidal blood flow.

This study used neuroanatomical techniques to investigate sources of afferents to the Edinger-Westphal nucleus (EW) of the pigeon. The EW contains the parasympathetic preganglionic neurons that, by way of the oculomotor nerve, project to the ciliary ganglion (Narayanan and Narayanan, '76; Lyman and Mugnaini, '80). The ciliary ganglion, in turn, innervates the internal musculature of the eye; the ciliary body, the iris sphincter muscle, and the smooth muscle of choroidal blood vessels (Marwitt et al., '71; Pilar and Tuttle, '82). In the bird, the neurons in the ciliary ganglion that innervate t

Morphogenesis of the cranial segments and distribution of neural crest in the embryos of the snapping turtle, Chelydra serpentina.

Recent studies of the heads of vertebrates have shown a primitive pattern of segmentation in the mesoderm and neural plate not previously recognized. The role of this pattern in the subsequent distribution of cranial crest and the development of branchial arches and cranial nerves, may resolve century-old arguments about the evolution of vertebrate segmentation. In this study, we examine the early embryonic development of the cranium of a primitive amniote, the snapping turtle, with the SEM. We show that the paraxial mesoderm cranial to the first-formed somites is segmented and that this patte

Neurotoxicogenomic impact of 4-nonylphenol on Heteropneustes fossilis via molecular, histopathological and bioinformatic analysis.

Exposure to 4-Nonylphenol at concentrations of 64 µg/L (low) and 160 µg/L (high) for 30 to 60 days, spanning the pre-spawning to spawning phases in H. fossilis, induces significant adverse effects in the brain, particularly within the telencephalon and cerebellum regions. Additionally, protein content in brain decreases in treated group of 4-Nonylphenol (4-NP), brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity decreases in a manner contingent upon the amount of dose and exposure period. In the brain tissue of H. fossilis, exposure to 4-Nonylphenol (4-NP) results in a dose-dependent decrement of antio

Regional brain serotonergic activity as an indicator of chronic stress and compromised welfare in fish.

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress in aquaculture poses major challenges to fish welfare, health, and productivity. Detecting compromised welfare early requires validated biomarkers that link operational welfare indicators (OWIs) to underlying neuroendocrine states, including allostatic load and stress coping capacity. The central serotonergic system is a promising candidate for such validation, given its conserved role in stress regulation across vertebrates. METHODS: We sampled 40 Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from research-scale sea cages spanning a wide range of welfare states under production-re

Transposable Elements Seed Transcription Factor Binding Sites to Sequence-Specific Double-Stranded DNA Binding TF Networks Contributing to Governance of Primate Brain Evolution.

Transposable elements (TEs) have played a pivotal role in shaping the regulatory architecture of mammalian genomes. This contribution reports multiple lines of evidence suggesting that TE have made a significant impact on brain development by providing sequences for thousands of transcription factor binding sites (TFBS). TE-encoded TFBS have scaffolded brain developmental regulatory regions (BDRRs) across mammalian evolution. TFBS density within BDRRs has markedly increased along the evolutionary trajectory from mouse to macaque to chimpanzee, reaching its highest levels in modern humans. This
