Anterior cruciate ligament injuries in female athletes.

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is frequently injured in elite athletes, with females up to eight times more likely to suffer an ACL tear than males. Biomechanical and hormonal factors have been thoroughly investigated; however, there remain unknown factors that need investigation. The mechanism of injury differs between males and females, and anatomical differences contribute significantly to the increased risk in females. Hormonal factors, both endogenous and exogenous, play a role in ACL laxity and may modify the risk of injury. However, data are still limited, and research involving o

[Paralysis of the intrinsic muscles of the hand].

Intrinsic muscles of the fingers are the interosseous, lumbricals and hypothenar muscles. Their main action is metacarpophalangeal (MP) flexion and interphalangeal (IP) extension. If extrinsic muscles remain active, intrinsic paralysis results in a claw deformity: MP hyperextension and IP flexion. Bouvier's test is positive if IP extension is actively possible when MP hyperextension is passively prevented. Surgical operations to correct claw deformity are divided into passive and active palliative procedures. Passive palliative procedures are tenodeses and capsuloplasties. Active palliative pr

Biomechanical Comparisons of Different Reconstructive Techniques for Scapholunate Dissociation: A Cadaveric Study.

There are many techniques for the treatment of chronic scapholunate dissociation. The three-ligament tenodesis (3LT) is used most widely, but reconstruction of the dorsal ligament alone may not provide sufficient stability. The Mark-Henry technique (MHT) compensates for the insufficient stability of 3LT by additional reconstruction of the volar ligament, but the procedure is complex. The SwiveLock technique (SWT), a recently introduced method, provides stability by using autologous tendons with synthetic tapes, but lacks long-term clinical results. To perform biomechanical comparisons of diffe

[Congenital club foot].

Congenital talipes equinovarus is the most common deformity of the lower limb. The adequate treatment of clubfeet is still a challenge for orthopaedic surgeons and requires well-founded knowledge of pathoanatomy and established therapeutical options. This refresher, in addition to pathoanatomical fundamentals, provides an update on diagnostic and therapeutical facilities. By reviewing the results of conservative and surgical treatment concepts and their discussion it shall contribute to optimal individual management of congenital talipes equinovarus.

Reconstruction of chronic Achilles tendon ruptures using a doubled peroneus longus tendon free graft and interference screw fixation: a technical note.

BACKGROUND: The surgical management of chronic Achilles tendon ruptures (CATR) with significant tissue defects (Myerson Type II/III) presents a clinical challenge. Traditional reconstructive methods relying on free hamstring autografts or flexor hallucis longus transfers are often limited by donor-site morbidity, infection risks, or are unavailable in patients with a history of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. This technical note describes a refined, tissue-preserving surgical technique utilising a doubled free autologous peroneus longus (PL) tendon graft. METHODS: Under regio
