Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati, are roundworms that live in the intestines of dogs and cats, respectively, and are predominantly agents of human toxocariasis. Studies have suggested that Toxocara spp. seroprevalence increases levels of total and aeroallergen-specific IgE (sIgE), asthma prevalence and asthma morbidity. Nevertheless, other work reported a negative association between Toxocara spp. seropositivity with skin hypersensititity and a positive association with sIgE. The objective of the present study was to evaluate risk factors for acquiring Toxocara spp. infection and to investigate p

INTRODUCTION: Toxocarosis in human beings is currently diagnosed by serological assay based on the detection of antibodies against Toxocara antigens. Toxocara canis larvae do not reach the adult stage in paratenic hosts like humans and mice. Therefore experimental infection in mice, which mimics the biology of human infection, might be relevant to get a better understanding of human toxocarosis.
METHODS: Two recombinant antigens viz. rTc-CTL-1 and rTES-120 were developed by expression of respective genes in Escherichia coli. The Balb/c mice were divided into 3 groups; Group I and group II (n

Toxocara canis is very common in dogs throughout the world. It is the primary cause of visceral larva migrans (VLM) in humans. Soil contaminated with T. canis embryonated eggs is the main source of infection of man. Our objective was to describe Toxocara seroprevalence in humans in the city of La Plata associated with some determinants such asage, presence or absence of clinical manifestations and risk factors. Blood samples were collected at random from 156 patients of different sex and age, with and without clinical symptoms compatible with the disease. The diagnostic technique ELISA test wa

BACKGROUND: The precise identification of nematodes which cause diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN) has been unsuccessful. Shape and size are useful in the initial stages of identification, but histopathologic examination usually is necessary for accurate classification. Intact nematodes recovered from patients with DUSN have been mentioned scarcely in the literature. The authors report the first case of DUSN in which a viable nematode was removed successfully via a transvitreal surgical approach and recovered for parasitologic study.
METHODS: Bimanual pars plana vitrectomy was

Two noncentrifugal and 5 centrifugal flotation methods for the recovery of infective Baylisascaris procyonis eggs from contaminated soil were evaluated after an epizootic of fatal cerebrospinal nematodiasis in bobwhites. All involved the use of inexpensive, readily available materials and routine procedures. In all but 1 of the methods, sizes of the soil samples were 30 g; in 1 centrifugal method, the sample size was 1 g. The centrifugal methods included various combinations of (i) anionic detergent (Tween) pretreatment of the soil, (ii) 3 X washing of the sediment, (iii) NaNO3 or ZnSO4 flotat

The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used for the serodiagnosis of four parasitic infections. ELISA was performed as a macromethod in polystyrene tubes and/or as a micromethod in polystyrene microplates. Conventionally raised pigs were infected orally with different numbers of Trichinealla spiralis larvae, and the pigs' sera were tested for antibody to T. spiralis. Results were compared with those from sera of uninfected conventionally raised pigs. Cynomolgus monkeys were infected orally and immunized with Toxocara canis. The results of macro-ELISA and micro-ELISA were compared wi

INTRODUCTION: Zoonotic diseases caused by different parasites are recently more frequently diagnosed in humans. Contact with domestic animals, mainly dogs and cats increases a risk for the infection. Toxocarosis and dirofilariasis have worldwide distribution. Parasitic infections in humans are diagnosed incidentally because health care providers has a little knowledge about them. In this manuscript we described a case of a polish farmer with visual problems who was diagnosed multiple parasitic coinfection cased by Dirofilaria, Toxocara sp. and Toxoplasma gondii.

Toxocara is a genus of nematodes, which infects a variety of hosts, principally dogs and cats, with potential zoonotic risks to humans. Toxocara spp. larvae are capable of migrating throughout the host tissues, eliciting eosinophilic and granulomatous reactions, while surviving for extended periods of time, unchanged, in the host. It is postulated that larvae are capable of altering the host's immune response through the release of excretory-secretory products, containing both proteins and extracellular vesicles (EVs). The study of EVs has increased exponentially in recent years, largely due t

Toxocara canis larvae are one of the most overlooked agents of nervous system infection in paratenic hosts. Previous studies in mouse models have shown that infection with various (mainly high) numbers of larvae leads to neurobehavioral disturbances and pathological changes. Our study investigated whether the infection with low and moderate numbers of larvae could affect the physical condition, motor skills, and pathogenesis in the brains of experimentally infected mice. Two groups of BALB/c mice were orally infected with 10 and 100 T. canis larvae per animal and examined regularly until the 97

BACKGROUND: Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati are parasitic nematodes that occur worldwide. As embryonated Toxocara spp. eggs in the environment pose a zoonotic risk, especially for children, optimal diagnostic approaches are necessary for effective disease response and management, including surveillance. However, little is known about the performance of different diagnostic protocols for detecting Toxocara spp. in the faeces of cats and dogs, hampering movement towards an optimal diagnostic process. This study aimed to compare detection methods, including a newly developed sequential sieving p

Toxocara canis (T. canis) is a common parasitic nematode in dogs and cats. Parasitic worms can cause chronic and long-term infections in their host, due to their ability to neutralize the host's defense mechanisms. They can stimulate immune response-mediated regulatory T (T-reg) cells. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of recombinant T. canis C-type lectin protein (TCTL-1) on cell infiltration in the brains of BALB /c mice as well as the number of regulatory T cells. Six-week-old female BALB/c mice received the recombinant C-type lectin protein of T. canis six times intravenously

BACKGROUND: Investigations of the relationships between the gut microbiota and gastrointestinal parasitic nematodes are attracting growing interest by the scientific community, driven by the need to better understand the contribution of parasite-associated changes in the composition of the gut flora to both host malnutrition and immune modulation. These studies have however been carried out mainly in humans and experimental animals, while knowledge of the make-up of the gut commensal flora in presence or absence of infection by parasitic nematodes in domestic animals is limited. In this study,

Some helminths have by their evolution learnt to systemically invade a host organism, and to select specific organs or host cell types as predilection site to reside, maturate or even proliferate. These parasites needed to develop complex and unique strategies to escape host immune reactions. The present work sheds some light into the strategy developed by three different helminths (Echinococcus multilocularis, Trichinella spiralis and Toxocara conis) to survive in the host organ or host cell, respectively. The crucial role of periparasitic host reactions that may help the host to control the

In the paper epidemiologic analysis of toxocarosis with socio-medical background in humans in the Lódź macroregion over the years 1996-2000 was carried out. It was found that 58.2% of toxocarosis cases represent asymptomatic invasions occurring more often in town residents. The clinical form "minor" pertained the country residents, patients of elementary education and the group "pupil-student". The "major" form of toxocarosis was found in the country residents, young people, and patients over 60 years old.

Infected dogs, including those that appear healthy, have been implicated in the genesis of certain infectious disorders in humans. Failure to appreciate the epidemiologic features of these infections can result in delayed diagnosis and therapy, with occasional fatal results. Efforts directed toward patient education, frequent veterinarian examinations of household pets, and thorough hand washing after animal contact will reduce the incidence of dog-related infections in humans.
