AI in patient education: a comparative analysis of the quality and readability of AI generated patient education material on spinal fusion.

PURPOSE: Generative artificial intelligence (AI) models are increasingly used to create patient education materials (PEM), offering on-demand health information. These tools hold the potential to democratise access to medical information, but concerns remain regarding the quality, readability, and reliability of AI-generated PEM. Spinal fusion surgery, a complex procedure, necessitates clear, accurate educational materials to support informed decision-making. Despite their promise, the capacity of AI models to meet health literacy needs remains underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate and c

Comparative study of pineal clock gene and AANAT2 expression in relation to melatonin synthesis in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax).

The photoreceptive teleost pineal is considered to be essential to the generation, synchronisation and maintenance of biological rhythms, primarily via melatonin release. The role of internal (circadian clock) and external (light) signals controlling melatonin production in the fish pineal differs between species, yet the reasons underpinning this remain largely unknown. Whilst in salmonids, pineal melatonin is apparently regulated directly by light, in all other studied teleosts, rhythmic melatonin production persists endogenously under the regulation of clock gene expression. To better under

Modulatory role of tumor necrosis factor receptor type 1-associated death domain protein (TRADD) in innate antiviral immune responses and apoptosis in red-spotted grouper (Epinephelus akaara).

Tumor necrosis factor receptor type 1-associated death domain protein (TRADD) is a unique adaptor molecule involved in multiple receptor-mediated signaling pathways that regulate cell survival and apoptosis in a context-dependent manner. Despite extensive studies on TRADD in mammals, its functional role in teleosts remains poorly understood. To address this gap, the present study characterized a TRADD homolog from red-spotted grouper (Epinephelus akaara, EaTRADD) to determine its function in teleosts. The predicted EaTRADD encoded a putative protein of 291 amino acids, comprising an N-terminal

Grouper IFIT1 inhibits iridovirus and nodavirus infection by positively regulating interferon response.

Interferon-induced protein with tetratricopeptide repeats 1 (IFIT1), one of the interferon stimulated genes (ISGs), is strongly induced by type I interferon (IFN), double-stranded RNAs and virus infection. To investigate the actions of fish IFIT1 in response to virus infection, we cloned an IFIT1 homolog from orange spotted grouper (EcIFIT1) and clarified its function in this study. The full-length cDNA of EcIFIT1 is 1839 bp, which is composed of 436 amino acid (aa) residues, with 77.8% and 22.8% identity to IFIT1 homolog of yellow perch (Perca flavescens) and humans (homo sapiens), respective

Molecular cloning, characterization and functional analysis of QRFP in orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides).

The peptide QRFP plays an important role in the regulation of vertebrate feeding behavior. In this study, we cloned the full length cDNA of a QRFP precursor in a teleost fish, the orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides). Sequence analysis has shown that the functional regions of QRFP in other vertebrates (QRFP-25 and QRFP-7) are conserved in orange-spotted grouper. RT-PCR demonstrated that the pre-processed mRNA of QRFP is widely expressed in orange-spotted grouper. Three days of food deprivation did not change the hypothalamic pre-processed QRFP expression. However, QRFP expression sign

Impact of routine vaccination against Haemophilus influenzae type b in The Gambia: 20 years after its introduction.

BACKGROUND: In 1997, The Gambia introduced three primary doses of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccine without a booster in its infant immunisation programme along with establishment of a population-based surveillance on Hib meningitis in the West Coast Region (WCR). This surveillance was stopped in 2002 with reported elimination of Hib disease. This was re-established in 2008 but stopped again in 2010. We aimed to re-establish the surveillance in WCR and to continue surveillance in Basse Health and Demographic Surveillance System (BHDSS) in the east of the country to assess a

Sanitation and Hygiene-Specific Risk Factors for Moderate-to-Severe Diarrhea in Young Children in the Global Enteric Multicenter Study, 2007-2011: Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Diarrheal disease is the second leading cause of disease in children less than 5 y of age. Poor water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions are the primary routes of exposure and infection. Sanitation and hygiene interventions are estimated to generate a 36% and 48% reduction in diarrheal risk in young children, respectively. Little is known about whether the number of households sharing a sanitation facility affects a child's risk of diarrhea. The objective of this study was to describe sanitation and hygiene access across the Global Enteric Multicenter Study (GEMS) sites in Africa

Bifunctional Role of the Sternohyoideus Muscle During Suction Feeding in Striped Surfperch, Embiotoca lateralis.

In ray-finned fishes, the sternohyoideus (SH) is among the largest muscles in the head region and, based on its size, can potentially contribute to the overall power required for suction feeding. However, the function of the SH varies interspecifically. In largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) and several clariid catfishes, the SH functions similarly to a stiff ligament. In these species, the SH remains isometric and transmitts power from the hypaxial musculature to the hyoid apparatus during suction feeding. Alternatively, the SH can shorten and contribute muscle power during suction feedin

Molecular cloning and functional characterization of PIASx from Epinephelus coioides reveals its negative regulatory role in antiviral immunity.

The protein inhibitor of activated signal transduction and transcription activation (STAT) (PIAS) family is a key class of signal transduction modulators that regulate innate immune signaling pathways activated by transcription factors including nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), Interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3), and Janus kinase/STAT (JAK/STAT). Here, we cloned the PIASx gene from Epinephelus coioides (EcPIASx) and investigated its molecular characteristics. The full-length cDNA of EcPIASx (Accession number: PZ171036) is 1934 bp, containing an open reading frame (ORF) of 1647 bp that encode

Potassium channels in primary cultures of seawater fish gill cells. II. Channel activation by hypotonic shock.

Previous studies performed on apical membranes of seawater fish gills in primary culture have demonstrated the existence of stretch-activated K(+) channels with a conductance of 122 pS. The present report examines the involvement of K(+) channels in ion transport mechanisms and cell swelling. In the whole cell patch-clamp configuration, K(+) currents were produced by exposing cells to a hypotonic solution or to 1 microM ionomycin. These K(+) currents were inhibited by the addition of quinidine and charybdotoxin to the bath solution. Isotopic efflux measurements were performed on cells grown on

PTPN2 modulates antiviral immunity in grouper by promoting TBK1 degradation and suppressing interferon signaling.

As a member of the class I non-receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase family, Tyrosine-protein phosphatase non-receptor type 2 (PTPN2) plays a pivotal role in the regulation of cellular signaling pathways. In this study, we successfully cloned and characterized a PTPN2 homolog from Epinephelus coioides, designated as EcPTPN2. The open reading frame (ORF) of EcPTPN2 spans 1186 nucleotides, encoding a protein of 395 amino acids (Accession number: PV289599). Fish ELOVL7a is involved in virus replication via lipid metabolic reprogramming.

The elongation of very long chain fatty acids (ELOVL) proteins are key rate-limiting enzymes that catalyze fatty acid synthesis to form long chain fatty acids. ELOVLs also play regulatory roles in the lipid metabolic reprogramming induced by mammalian viruses. However, little is known about the roles of fish ELOVLs during virus infection. Here, a homolog of ELOVL7 was cloned from Epinephelus coioides (EcELOVL7a), and its roles in red-spotted grouper nervous necrosis virus (RGNNV) and Singapore grouper iridovirus (SGIV) infection were investigated. The transcription level of EcELOVL7a was signi

Palmitic Acid Promotes Virus Replication in Fish Cell by Modulating Autophagy Flux and TBK1-IRF3/7 Pathway.

Palmitic acid is the most common saturated fatty acid in animals, plants, and microorganisms. Studies highlighted that palmitic acid plays a significant role in diverse cellular processes and viral infections. Accumulation of palmitic acid was observed in fish cells (grouper spleen, GS) infected with Singapore grouper iridovirus (SGIV). The fluctuated content levels after viral infection suggested that palmitic acid was functional in virus-cell interactions. In order to investigate the roles of palmitic acid in SGIV infection, the effects of palmitic acid on SGIV induced cytopathic effect, exp
