Listeriosis Outbreak in South Africa: A Comparative Analysis with Previously Reported Cases Worldwide.

Listeria species are Gram-positive, rod-shaped, facultative anaerobic bacteria, which do not produce endospores. The genus, Listeria, currently comprises 17 characterised species of which only two (L. monocytogenes and L. ivanovii) are known to be pathogenic to humans. Food products and related processing environments are commonly contaminated with pathogenic species. Outbreaks and sporadic cases of human infections resulted in considerable economic loss. South Africa witnessed the world's largest listeriosis outbreak, characterised by a progressive increase in cases of the disease from Januar

Actinomyces in Pregnancy: A Review of the Literature.

IMPORTANCE: Actinomyces is commonly found in many areas of the body where it derives a benefit without harming the host. When it does infect the host during pregnancy, is that infection a threat to the obstetric patient and does that infection cause adverse pregnancy outcomes? OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to review what is known about Actinomyces infections and the impact of an Actinomyces infection on pregnancy outcomes. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A PubMed search was undertaken with the search years unlimited to April 1, 2016, and restricted to articles in English. The search terms inclu

Labrys soli sp. nov., isolated from the rhizosphere of ginseng.

In this study, we describe strain DCY64T that was isolated from the rhizosphere of three-year-old Korean ginseng root. Cells were Gram-reaction negative, oxidase- and catalase-positive, strictly aerobic, capsulated, non-motile, non-sporulating and spherical to short rod-shaped. Multiplicative budding cells were produced. Vesicles covered the surface of cells. Phylogenetic analysis placed strain DCY64T within the genus Labrys with the highest similarity to Labrys monachus VKM B-1479T (97.6 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), followed by Labrys okinawensis MAFF 210191T (97.5 %), Labrys miyagie

[Clostridium botulinum and botulinum neurotoxin].

Clostridium botulinum is a gram-positive anaerobic rod that forms endospores. This bacterium produces large molecular toxin complexes, namely botulinum toxin complexes (progenitor toxins). It (L toxin complex) is composed of a single neurotoxin molecule (BoNT with a molecular weight of 150 kDa), a single nontoxic nonhemagglutinin molecule (NTNHA), and a hemagglutinin complex (HA). On food-borne botulism, nontoxic components have the roles of protecting toxin protein from the degeneration and degradation action of acids and proteases existing in the gastrointestinal tract. The HA facilitates tr

[A fulminating case of Edwardsiella tarda septicemia with necrotizing fasciitis].

A 67-year-old Japanese male, suffering from liver cirrhosis with hepatoma, was admitted to the Yokohama National Hospital because of ascites retention. On physical examination, his abdomen was massively distended with ascites and his lower extremities were edematous. Laboratory findings on admission revealed hypoalbuminemia, moderate icterus, pancytopenia and hepatitis C virus antibody positivity. After admission, abdominal distention and edema were improved with the use of diuretics. On the 15th day of hospitalization, the patient noted diarrhea and bowel movements that occurred 10 times a da

Prodigiosin-like pigments.

Prodigiosin, the bright red tripyrrole pigment from Serratia marcescens, has also been identified in Pseudomonas magnesiorubra, Vibrio psychroerythrus, and two Gram-negative rod-shaped mesophilic marine bacteria not members of the genus Serratia. Prodigiosin is sometimes bound to proteins; thus, extracts may require acid treatment before isolation of the pigment. Higher homologs of prodigiosin have been detected by mass spectroscopy. A mutant strain of S. marcescens produced nor-prodigiosin, in which the methoxy group of prodigiosin is replaced by a hydroxy group. Another mutant strain produce

Description and genomic insights into a multidrug resistant novel bacterium Savagea serpentis sp. nov., isolated from the scats of a vine snake (Ahaetulla nasuta).

Two Gram-stain positive, endospore forming, non-motile, rod shaped bacterial strains SN6T and SN6b were isolated from scats of a mildly venomous vine snake (Ahaetulla nasuta). Strains were phenotypically resistant to multiple antibiotics of four different classes i.e. aminoglycosides, β-lactams, fluoroquinolones and sulphonamides. Cells of both the strains were catalase positive and oxidase negative. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of these two strains showed closest similarity (99.2% and 99.3%) with Savagea faecisuis Con12T, the only species of the genus Savagea

Underexposure of linezolid in critically ill patients with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO): results from a monocentric study including blood samples from 52 patients.

PURPOSE: Linezolid serum concentrations in critically ill patients show high variability. In this retrospective study, we analysed the linezolid plasma through levels (Cmin) in patients on intensive care units (ICUs) under extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. The aim was to evaluate if patients' clinical or demographic characteristics influence drug concentrations and if these are within the therapeutic range. METHODS: In total, 156 linezolid trough plasma concentrations from 52 ICU ECMO patients were analysed. Linezolid trough levels were correlated with the following clinical

Examining pancreatic stone protein response in ICU-acquired bloodstream infections: a matched event analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic stone protein (PSP) exhibits potential as a plasma biomarker for infection diagnosis and risk stratification in critically ill patients, but its significance in nosocomial infection and intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired bloodstream infection (BSI) remains unclear. This study explores the temporal responses of PSP in ICU-acquired BSI caused by different pathogens. METHODS: From a large cohort of ICU patients, we selected episodes of ICU-acquired BSI caused by Gram-negative rods (GNRs), enterococci, or Candida species. Events were matched on length of ICU stay at infecti

A Rare Case of Metallosis Co-occurring With Chronic Prosthetic Joint Infection in Total Hip Arthroplasty.

Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) and metallosis are known complications of total hip arthroplasty (THA) and are causes for revision surgeries. Articulating metal surfaces in total hip arthroplasty with corrosion at modular junctions can lead to the release of metal ions that can cause an immune-mediated biological reaction. There are few cases in the literature of both coinciding together. We describe a case of chronic Cutibacertium acnes PJI and metallosis co-occurring in a 64-year-old female after THA with a dual mobility construct. After undergoing uncomplicated left THA through a modified

A suspected case of Clostridium perfringens sepsis with intravascular hemolysis after transhepatic arterial chemoembolization: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Sepsis due to Clostridium perfringens, one of several clostridial species, is an important cause of massive intravascular hemolysis in patients with underlying malignancies. Chronic liver diseases, immunosuppression, and presence of malignancies were risk factors for Clostridium perfringens sepsis. Therefore, Clostridium perfringens sepsis should always be considered in patients presenting with liver damage after chemo-embolic therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma. This case report focuses on findings characteristic of an intravascular hemolysis due to Clostridium perfringens afte

The isolation of Burkholderia cepacia in a hospital setting in Sri Lanka.

INTRODUCTION: Burkholderia cepacia is widely prevalent in nature. The natural habitat of this organism is soil, water and vegetation, but the hospital environment remains the main source of infection. It causes a wide variety of infections in hospitalised patients. Since there are no reports of its prevalence in Sri Lanka, a data retrieval and analysis was undertaken to determine its incidence among patients at Sri Jayawardenepura General Hospital (SJGH). OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence, morphological characteristics, biochemical profile and antibiotic susceptibility pattern of B cepac

Ejaculate for Microbiological Culture: To Wash or Not To Wash?

Bacteria can be associated with male infertility. Antibacterial substances (e.g., zinc-containing proteins, antimicrobial peptides) in ejaculates might impair the growth of bacteria in culture. We therefore wanted to test if removing antibacterial substances by washing the ejaculate could improve the detection of bacteria in culture. All ejaculates from patients ≥18 years old, which were obtained for routine diagnostics to assess male infertility were included in this study (no exclusion criteria were applied). Test samples were diluted with 2 mL sterile 0.45% saline, vortexed, and centrifuged

Utility of Serological Tests in the Era of Molecular Testing for Diagnosis of Human Brucellosis in Endemic Area with Limited Resources.

BACKGROUND: The culture has always been the gold standard test for diagnosis of human brucellosis but the conventional Brucella diagnostic tests viz. serology and culture are often beset with poor specificity & sensitivity respectively. The culture positivity rates for Brucella vary from 92% for bone marrow to 10% for non-blood samples and also dependent on the type of sample. The primary immune-determinant for Brucella species is the cell wall surface lipopolysaccharide, which is antigenically similar to other gram-negative rods. Hence, Brucella serological tests cross react with Escherichia

[Anthrax--the past, present and future].

HISTORY: Anthrax has been known since ancient times. Besides some references in the Old Testament, there is evidence of plagues in ancient Egypt, as well as descriptions of the disease by the Roman poet Virgil. ETIOLOGY: Anthrax is caused by Bacillus anthracis, unmovable, aerobic, gram-positive rods. It forms spores, which can survive for years in the environment. PATHOGENESIS: Capsular polypeptide and anthrax toxin are the principal virulence factors of Bacillus anthracis. Anthrax toxin consists of three proteins called protective antigen, edema factor, and lethal factor. It is thought that
