Neural state reduction: a quantum-inspired framework for how latent conscious thought becomes reportable.

Human conscious thought often appears as a diffuse, unstable, and only partly verbalizable field until attention, questioning, decision, or speech stabilizes it into a reportable form. This manuscript develops a quantum-inspired neural framework for that transition. The proposal does not claim that consciousness literally depends on microscopic quantum computation, that the brain implements a physical quantum computer, or that neuronal tissue maintains macroscopic quantum coherence. Instead, it uses the mathematical architecture of quantum theory-state vectors, density matrices, projection ope

Neurofunctional phenotyping to investigate the role of the orexin system at the intersection of opioid use disorder and insomnia: a protocol for a randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trial of lemborexant in patients with insomnia receiving buprenorphine.

INTRODUCTION: Insomnia is a common complaint among patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) maintained on buprenorphine (BUP). However, people with OUD have historically been excluded from insomnia clinical trials, leaving clinicians without evidence-based treatment options for this patient population. Lemborexant, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved dual orexin receptor antagonist for the treatment of insomnia, was recently shown to be safe and tolerable among a sample of patients with insomnia who were maintained on BUP. We hypothesise that pharmacologically antagonising the orexi

Low-Cost, High-Impact Teaching in Pharmacology: A Mixed-Methods Study Assessing the Effectiveness of a Ball-and-Balloon Activity on Student Engagement and Learning Outcomes.

Background Pharmacology education often relies on didactic lectures, leading to challenges in maintaining student engagement and translating abstract drug mechanisms into a concrete understanding. This is particularly challenging in resource-constrained settings where access to high-fidelity simulations is limited. In alignment with competency-based medical education (CBME) principles, there is a pressing need for affordable, innovative, and highly impactful teaching-learning (T-L) methods that foster deep conceptual understanding and positive professional attitudes. Methods A pre- and post-in

Effects of Combing Group Executive Functioning and Online Parent Training on School-Aged Children With ADHD: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: The acceptance of drug treatment for younger children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in China remains low. Here, we explored the clinical benefits of a non-pharmaceutical intervention method combining a group and executive function training and an online parent training program, termed group executive functioning and online parent training (GEF-OPT), for school-aged students with ADHD through a randomized controlled trial. METHOD: A total of 145 children (aged 6-8 years) were formally registered and randomized to the intervention group (n = 73) and waitlist gr

Mental Workload in Neuropsychology: An Example With the NASA-TLX in Adults With HIV.

A preliminary set of analyses are presented, where workload was examined in 32 adults infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Like the current COVID-19 pandemic (caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus), HIV can produce a wide variety of symptoms, including various levels of cognitive dysfunction. In fact, a recent meta-analysis estimates that of the 39 million adults infected globally with HIV, 42.6% exhibit some form of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder. A common cognitive symptom in HIV is decline in attention and executive functioning. Though typically examined by clinicians with

Neuropsychological profile and social cognition in congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS): Correlation with neuroimaging in a clinical case.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) is a rare genetic disorder due to paired-like homeobox gene (PHOX2B) mutations. CCHS patients suffer from dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system characterized by the absence of or extremely reduced response to hypercapnia and hypoxia, with neuropsychological deficits. The aim of this exploratory study is to describe the longitudinal neuropsychological profile and its correlations with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of a child with CCHS with a PHOX2B mutation. METHOD: A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation was con

Is cyberchondria a new transdiagnostic digital compulsive syndrome? A systematic review of the evidence.

BACKGROUND: Cyberchondria (CYB) has been described relatively recently as a behaviour characterized by excessive online searching for medical information that is associated with increasing levels of health anxiety. Although CYB has received some attention from researchers, there is no consensus about many of its aspects. AIMS: We describe one of the first reported cases of a treatment-seeking patient with CYB. We review the published literature on the definition of CYB, its assessment, epidemiology, cost and burden, psychological models and mechanisms associated with CYB, relationships betwee

Is intelligence equivalent to executive functions?

UNLABELLED: The online proliferation of COVID-19 misinformation led to adverse health and societal consequences. This study investigated possible differences in COVID-19 headline accuracy discernment and online sharing of COVID-19 misinformation between older and younger adults, as well as the role of individual differences in global cognition, health literacy and verbal IQ. Fifty-two younger (18-35 years old) and fifty older adults (age 50 and older) completed a neurocognitive battery, health literacy and numeracy measures, and self-report questionnaires via telephone. Participants also compl

Beyond the clicker: rethinking student response systems as pedagogical infrastructure for healthcare professions education.

Large-group lectures (150 students and upwards) remain a central component of healthcare professions education despite longstanding concerns about passivity, limited interaction, and difficulties in providing formative feedback at scale. These concerns have acquired renewed relevance as educators face digitally connected student cohorts, ubiquitous smartphones, and growing concerns about digital distraction. Student response systems (SRS), initially introduced through dedicated "clickers" and now commonly accessed through students' own digital devices, offer one approach to transforming the la

When does ChatGPT help or hinder? A scoping review of influencing factors in college EFL learners' affective and cognitive experiences.

Existing reviews have established the overall direction of ChatGPT's effects on college English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners' affective and cognitive experiences but have not systematically addressed under what conditions these effects arise. This scoping review maps the influencing factors reported in 26 empirical studies examining ChatGPT and closely related LLM-based generative AI tools as shaping these experiences. A systematic search of Web of Science, Scopus, and ERIC following PRISMA-ScR guidelines and the (Arksey and O'malley, 2005) framework yielded 829 records, with 26 studie

Prediction bias for physical exertion in chronic fatigue: Evidence from an observational paradigm.

Many clinical conditions are associated with a high incidence of chronic fatigue. While some physiological causes for chronic fatigue are established, e.g., processes connected to inflammation, psychological factors may also contribute. The metacognitive theory of dyshomeostasis proposes that a mismatch between cognitive predictions and sensory evidence for actions undermines self-efficacy and perception of control, contributing to chronic fatigue. We aimed to investigate alterations in prediction for physical exertion in participants with chronic fatigue using a new paradigm based on observat

Interpersonal problems as predictors of anxiety symptom trajectories in PTSD: A retrospective multilevel modeling study.

BACKGROUND: This retrospective quality-control study examined whether patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at a specialized Norwegian inpatient hospital exhibited high levels of interpersonal problems before treatment and whether these problems predicted anxiety symptom trajectories during treatment. METHODS: The study analyzed routinely collected data from 58 inpatients with chronic PTSD (M = 44.2 years, SD = 11.0; 51.7% female) who received either Prolonged Exposure (PE) or Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) between 2016 and 2021. Hypnotizability and interoception: Differential associations with accuracy, sensibility, and awareness.

Prior research suggests differences in interoceptive processing across hypnotizability levels; however, the validity of previously used measures has been questioned, and how hypnotizability relates to different interoceptive dimensions remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the relationship between hypnotizability and three dimensions of interoception: accuracy (IA), sensibility (IS), and awareness (IAW). Forty-two healthy participants completed a heartbeat counting task (HCT) and a heartbeat discrimination task (HDT) to measure IA. IS was assessed using the Body Perception Questionnaire

The relationship between self-reported interoception and depression: A systematic review and multilevel meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Emerging research highlights interoceptive dysfunction as a potential mechanism underlying depression. Whereas physiological measures of interoception (e.g., cardiac accuracy tasks) have shown inconsistent associations with depression, subjective self-report measures may provide greater insight. However, no previous meta-analysis has synthesised evidence on self-reported interoception and depression. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search of PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science identified 49 studies (N = 21,755) meeting our inclusion criteria. A three-level meta-an

Agentic AI as a dual-role lecturer and teaching assistant: effects on learner autonomy, self-regulated learning, and intrinsic motivation in university-level EFL education.

Large language model (LLM)-powered agentic systems are increasingly deployed in higher education, yet their effects on learner autonomy and self-regulated learning (SRL) remain empirically underexamined. This 16-week quasi-experimental study evaluated a dual-role Agentic AI-an AI Lecturer paired with an adaptive AI Teaching Assistant-embedded in Uedu.tw, a university EFL platform in Taiwan, drawing on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development. Participants were 120 Taiwanese B1 undergraduates (60 experimental, 60 control) assigned by intact class with a single

Promise, Mimicry, and Surveillance: Responsibly Integrating Artificial Intelligence With Socratic Inquiry in Medical Education.

Large language models are increasingly proposed as a way to deliver Socratic dialogue at scale in medical education, offering personalized, always-available, and lower-stakes inquiry that human educators cannot logistically provide. In this viewpoint, I argue that this promise is plausible but unproven and that 2 failure modes deserve more attention than they currently receive. The first is the mimicry trap: a system that fluently generates Socratic-sounding questions can appear to cultivate reasoning while functioning as interactive content delivery. I position this as an educational instance

A sequential integrating virtual simulation and authentic video for preschool teacher candidates' observational skills training: A design-based intervention study.

Professional observation ability is a foundational skill for preschool teachers, yet its cultivation has long faced the challenge of bridging theory and practice. Virtual simulation and authentic video offer new technological pathways to address this gap, but research on their sequential integration remains limited. This study adopted a design-based research-informed intervention approach, conducting four sequential workshops over six weeks with one natural class of 46 preschool teacher candidates. A mixed-methods design was employed, integrating group observation assignment scores (32 valid s

Me in action: Distinct processing levels shape the relationship between sense of agency and sense of ownership.

Competing neurocognitive models offer different accounts of how the sense of agency (the experience of controlling one's actions) and the sense of ownership (the experience that one's body belongs to oneself) relate within bodily self-awareness. The additive model proposes that agency entails ownership, the independence model treats the two experiences as functionally distinct, and the interactive model suggests reciprocal influences between them. However, empirical tests comparing these predictions within a single coherent experimental paradigm remain limited. Here, we developed an immersive

Latent Neurocognitive Mechanisms Underlying Quantity Discrimination in Children with and without Mathematical Learning Disabilities.

Mathematical learning disabilities (MLD) affect up to 14% of school-age children, yet the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms remain elusive. We developed drift diffusion model with dynamic performance monitoring (DDM-DPM), an innovative cognitive model that captures both external and internal sources of structural variability in task performance. Combining DDM-DPM with functional brain imaging, we examined symbolic and nonsymbolic quantity discrimination in female and male children with MLD and typically developing children matched on age, gender, and IQ. Children with MLD showed format-depe

Subtract to solve: a pilot study testing implicit and experiential interventions against additive bias.

When seeking to transform an object, idea, or situation, individuals often default to adding new components rather than removing existing ones, a cognitive tendency known as additive bias. Although recently formalized in cognitive science, strategies to mitigate this bias remain limited. This pilot study investigated the potential of the additive bias Implicit Association Test (ad-IAT) as a scalable educational tool for raising awareness of additive bias and promoting subtractive thinking. Sixty participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: ad-IAT, experiential learning, or c
