Highly selective sensor for the detection of Hg2+ ions using homocysteine functionalised quartz crystal microbalance with cross-linked pyridinedicarboxylic acid.

This study reports an insightful portable vector network analyser (VNA)-based measurement technique for quick and selective detection of Hg2+ ions in nanomolar (nM) range using homocysteine (HCys)-functionalised quartz-crystal-microbalance (QCM) with cross-linked-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDCA). The excessive exposure to mercury can cause damage to many human organs, such as the brain, lungs, stomach, and kidneys, etc. Hence, the authors have proposed a portable experimental platform capable of achieving the detection in 20-30 min with a limit of detection (LOD) 0.1 ppb (0.498 nM) and a bette

Is infrared thermography (IRT) a possible tool for the evaluation and follow up of Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy? A preliminary study.

HYPOTHESIS: The hypothesis of this work is that infrared thermography could become a valid tool for the diagnosis and follow-up of the Emery-Dreifuss disease due to putative temperature changes produced by a constant degenerative evolution of this muscular dystrophy. TESTING THE HYPOTHESIS: To justify this hypothesis we proposed a pilot study with 2 brothers affected of Emery-Dreifuss who present a very different age, with the principal objective to evidence a possible evolution of this pathology. Acquisition and comparison of images of computerized axial tomography (CT) and thermography (IRT

Practice recommendations for the monitoring of renal function in pediatric non-renal organ transplant recipients.

The management of non-renal pediatric solid organ transplant recipients has become complex over the last decade with innovations in immunosuppression and surgical techniques. Post-transplantation follow-up is essential to ensure that children have functioning allografts for as long as possible. CKD is highly prevalent in these patients, often under recognized, and has a profound impact on patient survival. These practice recommendations focus on the early detection and management of hypertension, proteinuria, and renal dysfunction in non-renal pediatric solid organ transplant recipients. We pr

Improved respiratory system conductance following bronchodilator predicts reduced exertional dyspnoea.

BACKGROUND: In COPD, improvements in lung mechanics following bronchodilator, measured using the forced oscillation technique (FOT), are more sensitive than spirometry at detecting improvement in lung function following bronchodilator. The relationship between these improvements in lung mechanics and improvements in functional outcomes, such as exertional dyspnoea, following bronchodilator, in COPD is unknown. METHODS: 17 COPD subjects were recruited into a double blind placebo controlled randomised cross over study. Dyspnoea was induced using a standardised six-minute walk test (6 MWT), and

Acute hypoxia diminishes the relationship between blood pressure and subarachnoid space width oscillations at the human cardiac frequency.

BACKGROUND: Acute hypoxia exerts strong effects on the cardiovascular system. Heart-generated pulsatile cerebrospinal fluid motion is recognised as a key factor ensuring brain homeostasis. We aimed to assess changes in heart-generated coupling between blood pressure (BP) and subarachnoid space width (SAS) oscillations during hypoxic exposure. METHODS: Twenty participants were subjected to a controlled decrease in oxygen saturation (SaO2 = 80%) for five minutes. BP and heart rate (HR) were measured using continuous finger-pulse photoplethysmography, oxyhaemoglobin saturation with an ear-clip s

Spatial and temporal regulation of biosynthesis of the plant immune signal salicylic acid.

The plant hormone salicylic acid (SA) is essential for local defense and systemic acquired resistance (SAR). When plants, such as Arabidopsis, are challenged by different pathogens, an increase in SA biosynthesis generally occurs through transcriptional induction of the key synthetic enzyme isochorismate synthase 1 (ICS1). However, the regulatory mechanism for this induction is poorly understood. Using a yeast one-hybrid screen, we identified two transcription factors (TFs), NTM1-like 9 (NTL9) and CCA1 hiking expedition (CHE), as activators of ICS1 during specific immune responses. NTL9 is ess

Characterization of a novel 1,3-bis(p-iminobenzoic acid)indane Langmuir-Blodgett film for organic vapor sensing.

In the present paper we report about the Langmuir-Blodgett thin film characterization and organic vapor sensing properties of a novel 1,3-bis(p-iminobenzoic acid)indane (IBI) containing polar carboxylic acid groups. LB film properties of IBI material is characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and quartz crystal microbalance. Our results show that high-quality and uniform LB films can be prepared with the transfer ratio of over 0.95. Organic vapor sensing properties are studied using quartz crystal microbalance measurement system. IBI film is found to be significantly

Differentiating obstructive and central sleep respiratory events through pulse transit time.

Noninvasive alternatives to esophageal pressure (Pes) are needed to evaluate respiratory effort during sleep. Pulse transit time (PTT) is the time taken for pulse pressure to travel from the aortic valve to the periphery. PTT has been shown to be inversely correlated with blood pressure, and can reveal acute changes generated by high pleural pressure swings during pulsus paradoxus. A close relationship has been demonstrated between the increase in Pes and a progressive rise in the amplitude of PTT oscillations. The aim of the present study was to assess the accuracy of PTT for the classificati

Voxel Based Morphometry Alterations in Mal de Debarquement Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Mal de debarquement syndrome (MdDS) is a disorder of chronic self-motion perception that occurs though entrainment to rhythmic background motion, such as from sea voyage, and involves the perception of low-frequency rocking that can last for months or years. The neural basis of this persistent sensory perception abnormality is not well understood. METHODS: We investigated grey matter volume differences underlying persistent MdDS by performing voxel-based morphometry on whole brain and pre-specified ROIs in 28 individuals with MdDS and comparing them to 18 age, sex, and handedness

Serum uric acid and arterial stiffness in hypertensive chronic kidney disease patients: sex-specific variations.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperuricemia and arterial stiffness are associated with increased cardiovascular risk. The specific relationship between arterial stiffness and serum uric acid (SUA) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients has not been investigated. We investigated whether the SUA level is associated with arterial stiffness in hypertensive CKD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study had a single-center, cross-sectional design. A total of 339 hypertensive CKD patients (female/male=192/147, mean age 57.9±13.9 years) were recruited. Arterial stiffness was assessed by pulse wave velocity (PWV) an

Frequency response characteristics of whole body autoregulation of blood flow in rats.

Previously, we demonstrated that very low-frequency (VLF) blood pressure variability (BPV) depends on voltage-gated L-type Ca(2+)-channels, suggesting that autoregulation of blood flow and/or myogenic vascular function significantly contributes to VLF BPV. To further substantiate this possibility, we tested the hypothesis that the frequency response characteristic of whole body autoregulation of blood flow is consistent with the frequency range of VLF BPV (0.02-0.2 Hz) in rats. In anesthetized rats (n = 11), BPV (0.016-0.5 Hz) was induced by computer-regulated cardiac pacing while blood pressu

Bilateral severe carotid artery stenosis or occlusion - cerebral autoregulation dynamics and collateral flow patterns.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral severe obstruction of the internal carotid artery is a hemodynamically critical state. We aimed to (1) analyze dynamic cerebral autoregulation (DCA) in affected patients, and (2) to correlate DCA data with different collateral flow patterns. METHODS: DCA was assessed noninvasively by transfer function analysis (phase shift) of respiratory-induced oscillations at 0.1 Hz of arterial blood pressure (Finapres method) and cerebral blood flow velocity (transcranial Doppler) in 30 patients with severe bilateral carotid stenosis (> or =75%) or occlusion. CO(2)-reactivity was mea

Association between respiratory impedance measured by forced oscillation technique and exacerbations in patients with COPD.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that increased airflow limitation as measured by spirometry is associated with the risk of exacerbation in patients with COPD. The forced oscillation technique (FOT) is a noninvasive method used to assess respiratory impedance (resistance and reactance) with minimal patient cooperation required. The clinical utility of the FOT in assessing the risk of exacerbations of COPD is yet to be determined. We examined the relationship between respiratory impedance as measured by FOT and exacerbations in patients with COPD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Among 310 patients with COP

Effect of sleep deprivation on rhythms of clock gene expression and melatonin in humans.

This study investigated the impact of sleep deprivation on the human circadian system. Plasma melatonin and cortisol levels and leukocyte expression levels of 12 genes were examined over 48 h (sleep vs. no-sleep nights) in 12 young males (mean±SD: 23±5 yrs). During one night of total sleep deprivation, BMAL1 expression was suppressed, the heat shock gene HSPA1B expression was induced, and the amplitude of the melatonin rhythm increased, whereas other high-amplitude clock gene rhythms (e.g., PER1-3, REV-ERBα) remained unaffected. These data suggest that the core clock mechanism in peripheral os

Tolerability of the Oscar 2 ambulatory blood pressure monitor among research participants: a cross-sectional repeated measures study.

BACKGROUND: Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is increasingly used to measure blood pressure (BP) in research studies. We examined ease of use, comfort, degree of disturbance, reported adverse effects, factors associated with poor tolerability, and association of poor tolerability with data acquisition of 24-hour ABPM using the Oscar 2 monitor in the research setting. METHODS: Sixty adults participating in a research study of people with a history of borderline clinic BP reported on their experience with ABPM on two occasions one week apart. Poor tolerability was operationalized as

Lack of kainic acid-induced gamma oscillations predicts subsequent CA1 excitotoxic cell death.

Gamma oscillations are a prominent feature of hippocampal network activity, but their functional role remains debated, ranging from mere epiphenomena to being crucial for information processing. Similarly, persistent gamma oscillations sometimes appear prior to epileptic discharges in patients with mesial temporal sclerosis. However, the significance of this activity in hippocampal excitotoxicity is unclear. We assessed the relationship between kainic acid (KA)-induced gamma oscillations and excitotoxicity in genetically engineered mice in which N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor deletion was c

Effect of transdermal nicotine replacement on alcohol responses and alcohol self-administration.

RATIONALE: Nicotine replacement is commonly used to treat tobacco use in heavy-drinking smokers. However, few studies have examined the effect of nicotine replacement on subjective and physiological responses to alcohol and alcohol drinking behavior. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this within-subject, double-blind study was to examine whether transdermal nicotine replacement (0 mg vs 21 mg/day) altered response to a low-dose priming drink and subsequent ad libitum drinking behavior. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects (n=19) were non-treatment-seeking, non-dependent heavy drinkers who were daily

Semi-continuous Propagation of Influenza A Virus and Its Defective Interfering Particles: Analyzing the Dynamic Competition To Select Candidates for Antiviral Therapy.

Defective interfering particles (DIPs) of influenza A virus (IAV) are naturally occurring mutants that have an internal deletion in one of their eight viral RNA (vRNA) segments, rendering them propagation-incompetent. Upon coinfection with infectious standard virus (STV), DIPs interfere with STV replication through competitive inhibition. Thus, DIPs are proposed as potent antivirals for treatment of the influenza disease. To select corresponding candidates, we studied de novo generation of DIPs and propagation competition between different defective interfering (DI) vRNAs in an STV coinfection

Iraq/Afghanistan war lung injury reflects burn pits exposure.

This descriptive case series retrospectively reviewed medical records from thirty-one previously healthy, war-fighting veterans who self-reported exposure to airborne hazards while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2003 and the present. They all noted new-onset dyspnea, which began during deployment or as a military contractor. Twenty-one subjects underwent non-invasive pulmonary diagnostic testing, including maximum expiratory pressure (MEP) and impulse oscillometry (IOS). In addition, five soldiers received a lung biopsy; tissue results were compared to a previously published sample fr
