OBJECTIVE: We compared tooth movement under maximum anchorage control with mini-screw implants in growing and non-growing patients.
METHODS: In total, 15 adolescent (G1) and 19 adult (G2) patients with prognathic profiles were selected. All patients underwent first premolar extraction treatment with mini-screw implants for maximum anchorage control. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data were obtained immediately after implant placement (T1) and at the end of anterior tooth retraction (T2). Tooth movement and root length changes of the maxillary first molar, canine, and incisors were evalu

Cervical vertebrae are rare in the early hominin fossil record, presenting a challenge for understanding the evolution of the neck and head carriage in hominin evolution. Here, we examine the cervical vertebrae of Australopithecus sediba, which unlike other South African taxa is known from associated cervical vertebrae. The A. sediba cervical vertebrae exhibit human-like values for wedging, pedicle cross-sectional areas, and articular facet heights, indicating reduced ventral loading relative to African apes. These features combine with a pattern of vertebral body bone distribution and caudall

In 1995 the first tracheosubmental intubation (TSI) in Poland was performed in the Clinic and De- partment of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery at Jagiellonian University Medical College in Kraków. Our 20 years of experience with using TSI in the eld of cranio-maxillofacial surgery, with 316 successfully performed intubations, resulted in one of the largest bodies of material analysed in the literature so far. The aim of this study was to evaluate the eficacy and complications of TSI in the field of cranio-maxillofacial surgery in patients where orotracheal or nasotracheal intubation is contraindic

INTRODUCTION: Headgears have been used to treat Class II malocclusions for over a century. The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the profile esthetic changes resulting from headgear use in growing Class II patients with protrusive, normal, and retrusive maxillae.
METHODS: Profile silhouettes were created from pretreatment and posttreatment lateral cephalometric tracings of growing Class II patients treated with headgear followed by conventional fixed appliances. Ten patients had an initially protrusive maxilla (FH:NA, >92°), 10 had an initially normally positioned maxilla

Soft tissue changes following correction of mandibular hyperplasia were studied using a laser system for three-dimensional (3-D) surface measurement. Twelve subjects (7 men and 5 women; age 17-48 years) were included in this study. Bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomies were performed in ten patients and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomies in two patients. Pre- and postoperative images, obtained with the laser system, were superimposed to determine distribution of changes in the perioral soft tissue. Mean volume changes were 1032.3 mm3 in the Subnasale-UL area and 8700.9 mm3 in the LL-Men

Estimated natural head position, or natural head orientation (NHO), has been proposed as a preferred reference position for assessing facial morphology. However, because this position is subjectively defined by the orthodontist, it could be influenced by facial form, which would be an undesirable attribute. The aim of this study was to assess whether NHO is influenced by facial morphology. Lateral photographs of 14 patients were used. Each was warped to produce 2 new images, with the chin positioned backwards or forwards relative to the original (+/-2 degrees change of the soft tissue N-Pg lin

Longitudinal clinical and cephalometric case studies are presented for two groups of patients with craniofacial dysostosis. The first sample includes two infants who underwent an extensive stripping procedure that was extended inferiorly to involve not only the coronal, but also the sphenozygomatic suture. The second sample includes two adolescents with midfacial hypoplasia who underwent a fronto-orbital-maxillary advancement. The extensive cranial stripping procedure had a favourable impact upon growth and development of the craniofacial structures, and longitudinal studies suggest the import

BACKGROUND: Bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) is the gold-standard surgical treatment for mandibular prognathism and facial symmetry restoration in class III malocclusion. However, it remains unclear whether asymmetric and symmetric mandibles exhibit differential relapse patterns that impact both functional stability and aesthetic outcomes. This study aims to compare intraoperative displacement and postoperative skeletal relapse between asymmetric and symmetric mandibles following BSSRO.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed class III malocclusion patients who under

Vertebrates exhibit remarkable morphological diversity, with the head representing an exceptionally complex anatomical structure shaped by adaptations to feeding ecology, brain size, and sensory organ specialization. Proper fusion of facial prominences and the coordinated growth of the skull and brain are essential for normal craniofacial development in vertebrates, including humans. Disruptions in these processes, whether due to gene mutations or external factors, can result in craniofacial malformations. In this study, we examined two pathological embryos of the brown anole, Anolis sagrei (I
