BACKGROUND: Many surgeons prefer bony stabilization including Bristow or Latarjet procedures for shoulder instability in collision athletes, even though several potential complications have been reported. There has been a limited number of studies on the midterm outcomes of arthroscopic soft tissue stabilization for anterior shoulder instability in competitive collision athletes.
PURPOSE: To assess the outcomes of arthroscopic soft tissue stabilization in combination with selective augmentation procedures for collision athletes with traumatic anterior shoulder instability.
STUDY DESIGN: Case

BACKGROUND: When participating in contact sports, (mild) head trauma is a common incident-observed in both professional and amateur sports. When head trauma results in transient neurological impairment, a sports-related concussion has occurred. Acute concussion, repetitive concussions, as well as cumulative "sub-concussive" head impacts may increase the risk of developing cognitive and behavioral deficits for athletes, as well as accelerated cerebral degeneration. While this concept has been well established for classic contact sports like American Football, Rugby, or Boxing, there is still an

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that arthroscopic shoulder stabilization yields higher rates of failure in contact or collision athletes as compared with open shoulder stabilization; however, this is largely based upon studies that do not employ modern, evidence-based surgical indications and techniques for arthroscopic shoulder stabilization.
PURPOSE: To (1) determine the pooled failure rate across all studies reporting failure after primary arthroscopic shoulder stabilization for anterior shoulder instability in contact or collision athletes and (2) stratify failure rates according to stud

BACKGROUND: The literature on the outcome of sport-related ankle fractures has focused on operatively managed fractures, despite a large proportion being treated nonoperatively. We describe the epidemiology, management, and outcome of acute sport-related ankle fractures in a UK population.
METHODS: All sport-related ankle fractures sustained during 2007 to 2008 in the Lothian Population were prospectively collected when patients attended the only adult orthopaedic service in Lothian. Fractures were classified using the Lauge Hansen and the Pott's Classification. The presence of fracture displ

BACKGROUND: Gaelic football is a national sport of Ireland. While predominantly played in Ireland, it is recognized in North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australasia. Its high-velocity, multidirectional, and high physical contact elements expose players to a risk of injury. To date, prospective injury data for Gaelic football has been of short duration.
PURPOSE: To describe the incidence and nature of sport-related injuries in elite male Gaelic football players over 4 consecutive seasons.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study.
METHODS: Over the period 2007 to 2010, a tota

BACKGROUND: Understanding how physical fitness develops during adolescence is critical for interpreting and optimizing training and setting realistic performance expectations in youth sport. Yet, evidence-based, age-referenced benchmarks that track multiple fitness components across sports remain lacking, leaving practitioners without reliable normative trajectories to guide athlete development.
PURPOSE: This longitudinal meta-analysis estimated developmental trajectories for vertical jump, sprint, and endurance performance in male youth athletes across multiple sports using data from longitu

PURPOSE: Navicular stress fractures are difficult to treat with high risks of non-union, and there are few studies evaluating treatment strategies and outcomes for chronic navicular stress fractures with non-union, particularly in professional elite athletes. Hence, the aim of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of vascularized pedicle bone grafting for chronic stress fractures of the navicular with non-union in a cohort of professional elite athletes while reporting on the complications, rate of reoperations and ability to return to sports (RTS).
METHODS: Seventeen elite athletes with iso

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with impaired cognitive, psychological, and neurological functions. As an embryological extension of the central nervous system, the retina allows non-invasive assessment of cerebral pathology via optical coherence tomography (OCT). This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated whether consistent OCT-derived retinal changes occur in TBI and their potential as biomarkers. A systematic search of five electronic databases identified studies comparing OCT parameters between individuals with TBI and controls. Retinal biomarkers included optic nerve, m

BACKGROUND: Lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) has gained popularity as a supplementary method for ACL reconstruction (ACL-R) to reduce the risk of graft rupture in adults. However, information on the effectiveness and safety of this procedure in pediatric and adolescent patients remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the functional outcomes and complications of lateral extra-articular tenodesis associated with ACL-R in adolescents at a minimum follow-up of 2 years.
METHODS: A consecutive series of patients aged ≤18 years who underwent ACL-R + LET in a 6-year period was retrospect

BACKGROUND: Concerns exist about the prevalence of abuse directed towards sports officials and its impact on their mental health; however, sports officiating can also be a rewarding experience.
OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to identify the frequency and determinants of both positive (e.g. praise, appreciation, apologies) and negative (e.g. verbal abuse, physical abuse, social media abuse) officiating interactions and to examine their independent contributions to mental ill-health symptoms.
METHODS: An online, cross-sectional survey was distributed to current or former sports officials

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cervical/lumbar total disk replacements (TDRs) are often performed for degenerative conditions but rarely in athletes. Therefore, we sought to conduct a systematic review of athletes undergoing TDRs of both the scientific literature and lay press, with an emphasis on contact sport athletes.
METHODS: In accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines, PubMed/Embase/Cochrane/Scopus/Web of Science databases were queried for all primary literature reporting TDRs in athletes, including both cervical/lumbar disk replacemen

Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess if injury-related alterations in the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool-5 (SCAT5) are matched by changes in transcranial magnetic stimulation-derived intracortical inhibition. We hypothesised that neurophysiological measures would take longer to return to normal than recovery assessed by the SCAT5 following sport related concussion (SRC). Methods: Thirteen male contact sport athletes (20.5 ± 4.5 years), who reported a concussion were recruited from local Rugby and American football clubs. Participants were tested at 4 timepoints throughout th

The posterior sternoclavicular joint dislocation is a rare and potentially life-threatening injury, as massive haemorrhage can occur at the time of trauma, during reduction manoeuvres and drilling. These injuries are rare and a collective experience of managing them is of paramount importance. We present our multidisciplinary experience of managing several of these injuries in our centre, with learning points we have identified. Assessment should include Computerised Tomography Angiography (CTA) to assess the anatomy of the joint including the proximity to the underlying innominate vein and to

Introduction: A common hand injury in American football, rugby and basketball is the so-called jersey finger injury (JFI), in which an eccentric overextension of the distal interphalangeal joint leads to an avulsion of the connected musculus flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon. In the field of automotive safety assessment, finite element (FE) neuromuscular human body models (NHBMs) have been validated and are employed to evaluate different injury types related to car crash scenarios. The goal of this study is to show, how such a model can be modified to assess JFIs by adapting the hand of

Finite Element (FE) models of brain mechanics have improved our understanding of the brain response to rapid mechanical loads that produce traumatic brain injuries. However, these models have rarely incorporated vasculature, which limits their ability to predict the response of vessels to head impacts. To address this shortcoming, here we used high-resolution MRI scans to map the venous system anatomy at a submillimetre resolution. We then used this map to develop an FE model of veins and incorporated it in an anatomically detailed FE model of the brain. The model prediction of brain displacem
